I lived in Japan for over 10 years and my wife's Japanese. We've been married now for 13 years. My Japanese in-laws have been nothing but wonderful to me. In fact, my Japanese mother-in-law told me that when she was a little girl, she wanted a Black doll so bad that she colored one of her White dolls brown. So she's always had a fondness for Black people.

Maybe my wife (and her family) is different in more ways then i realized because MY experience living in japan and married to a Japanese wife is a bit different from what was stated in this interview (and also similar in some ways). But i definitely respect his experience, its only natural for people to experience things differently despite being in similar circumstances!!!!!!! Its an eye opener for me to hear his story though, thats what makes this interview so great for me!!!

@@joseph3036 My parents in law have been very welcoming and very accepting of me. From the beginning (even before we had a child together), my in laws was super excited to teach me the old time Japanese customs that was popular during their upbringings. Their way of teaching me was to invite me to part take in those activities. I guess that was also their way of opening up to me and allowing us to become closer despite the language barrier. Within my first year of living in Japan, my father in law and I traveled to Kyoto on new years day to visit the temple that his ancestors are buried at after we prepared and ate mochi. He also been somewhat like my advisor on my business ventures ever since I arrived. Because of this I never felt like I wasn’t accepted fully. Im not sure if Sharon doesn’t feel fully accepted by his in laws (or if thats just a belief he has about in laws in general) but thats definitely not a feeling I’ve experienced since moving here. Off topic but somewhat related, majority of the time I feel accepted as a foreigner in Japan. For the most part Japanese people have a strong sense of showing respect- its kinda embedded in their culture and def reflected in their language as well. While learning Japanese foreigners should learn keigo (masu and desu) form of saying things in order to show respect, appreciation and to talk respectfully to someone you are not that close too. People use keigo when they talk to me even though Im a foreigner. Having said that, no country is perfect so theres definitely flaws to living out here as a foreigner as well. It’s true that when men graduate in Japan they typically commit (long term) to a particular company and there is definitely this concept of a working man in Japan who provides financially. But my wife sees marriage as a partnership- two people being in it together- so we both contribute equally. We both help with the responsibilities of raising our son and we always divide the bills amongst us equally (except of rent which I voluntarily cover). We have a shared bank account but we also have our separate bank accounts that we manage independently on our own. She believes it’s too much emotional stress when one person shoulders the financial and/or parenting duties on their own. Just about everything is 50/50. So like Sharon's wife, my wife doesn’t ask me to give her my salary so she can allocate my earnings. My father in law is a small business owner who found success by taking risk. My mother in law worked with him to build that business so unlike Sharon's wife, my wife always encourage me to take risk with my business and not to limit myself to working for one company long term. my bad i wrote a book but i felt like adding details and some examples was necessary.

The lifetime contract is similar to a government job in Brazil. Once you are in a government position (from the guy who cleans the street to a judge) you have 2 to 3 years of 'experiencie' probation and then you are 'stable' for your life, meaning you can't just be fired (there are specific laws that determines what can get you fired). To get a job in government you must pass specific exams for the job, and depending on the position you might compete with 100k people for 100-200 open position. Interesting that they apply it there in Japan's private market.

Can’t agree / relate to this dudes assessment. I’ve been married to a Japanese woman for 11 years and lived in Japan for ten of those. My in laws have been amazing, accepting, and always made me feel part of the family. Have a bunch of mates married to Japanese women here, all of them have the same experience w good in laws. I’m sure there are a bunch of people who are still a bit backwards / old style like any other nationality but I personally haven’t seen it.

I remember a Chinese American on my ship, when stationed in Japan, found it weird that people in the US wait a few years before getting married. He got married to his wife after 2 months of dating her and had 2 kids with her. Some guys were on his side and others thought he was crazy. He said the same thing as the guy in the video.

Whenever the setup is like this, where the man is a foreigner (especially darker skinned) and the woman is Japanese- she is on the losing end. She’s got nothing to gain from being married to such foreigner. Romantic relationships are not a beautiful thing. Romance causes a lot of problems in this world. Life is a lot better without romance than it is with it. Romantic love is not special at all, and I think that the romantic type of love isn't real. More than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other. Romantic relationships are objectively very prone to failure. And most couples who are still together are usually not happy being together. Also, there are a lot of toxic romantic relationships. Like an example is that abuse happens a lot in romantic relationships. Studies prove single, childless, women are the HAPPIEST demographic. Women are the happiest when single and focused on themselves.

It takes time sometimes. My husband is Korean, we have been married for 3 years and we're going to have our ceremony this March finally. Keep in mind that, with covid, planning a ceremony has not been easy for many married couples. Especially if she wants to have it in Hawaii. I'm sure they need to save a lot of money first.

@@puppyoverload5145 West or not, parents with daughters always want to see their daughter as a bride. Parents want to show off their daughter as "married" as well. Especially in asian cultures. They want to invite everyone to show them how great and amazing their daughter wedding is etc. Family is more involved in the marriage than their counterparts in the West. So that's why I said they might feel some type of way about their son in law not giving them that opportunity to feel proud and see their daughter as a bride. Just because they didn't make a scandal about it that doesn't mean that's not how they might feel about it.
