I'm lucky enough to have been married to a Japanese woman for sixteen years (Yes, I mean that.). I'm just going to throw this out there, based on my own experiences and observations: As a foreigner, you might have an idea of what a traditional Japanese wife is like. You've watched the dramas. You've read the books. Maybe, you've even been to the home of a married Japanese coworker. The fact is, if your wife is Japanese, and is willing to be married to a foreigner...she is not going to act like a traditional Japanese wife. The fact that she is willing to marry you means that she wants something different than the traditional Japanese wife. Get that image of your beautiful wife waiting at the door for you with your slippers and a beer out of your head. Avoid those expectations, and your life will be bliss.
@sunahamanagai90393 жыл бұрын
Knowing both sides, I find it utterly hilarious. Foreign guys want Japanese wives thinking they are traditional and subservient, all the while Japanese women that want to marry foreigners want the "lady first" experience and think that the husband will treat them like princesses, unlike their Japanese counterparts. Both sides going in expecting to be served on is funny af.

Very true! The reason they marry a foreigner is because they do not want to be like a Japanese woman kow- towing to their men!On your part,do not expect the Japanese wife to behave like a Western woman!They keep their own friends and you keep yours!Do not expect her to be at every party you go to!They may not be so conversant in your language and find it boring when you speak in a language she does not understand! it's been 25 years for us. Basically a friend hooked us up (here in Canada), it clicked. I proposed to her right away but she told me to cool off a bit, we did end up marrying after 2 years dating. It was never a goal to have a Japanese wife, it just happened, but I've really come to appreciate Japanese culture and way of thinking. Definitely a bit of a cultural difference over displays of affection, the love is there, 25 years is proof of that, but not always in a way that is fulfilling to a Canadian who might be used to more physical affection. Not a big deal though. I can't say there are any huge differences culturally for the most part. We are just 2 people with similar values at the end of the day who care for each other and our kids very much. She's my best friend. We've been through a lot but she's always been there for me. Not for cuddles mind you, but there :P

ya im a half japanese guy, not married but just from an observation or also just an opinion, but it seems after marriage, a lot of women and men just stop “trying”. might sound sexist, but thats one thing im afraid to experience, i think even if you are married, have kids, i think having that intimacy is important. i think it doesnt happen like that in japan because its the cycle. if their parents arent as intimate, so it happens to you as well once you settle down, that seems to be what happens in japan. im not saying this is exactly what happens but seems to every couple are intimate before marriage but once they have kids, the husband hardly comes home due to over work or also not being paid attention to by the wife, so if he is lucky enough they have an affair, women do the same too if the husbands are hardly home. in western culture, i see married couples, touching, holding hands, but with a lot of eastern couples, it stops or doesn’t happen much. they act like its only for when you are young to be lovey dovey when it honestly shouldnt matter. every once in awhile i see older husband and wives holding hands, and i think its cute seeing that

I have been married to a Japanese woman for 14 years now. My observations run in both directions: - Spend time together before getting married doing something that's out of the comfort zone for both of you. Going camping in cold, wet weather would be ideal, because such a situation brings up all sorts of things that tend to stay hidden for a while, such as: * how does your partner cope with discomfort? * are they proactive in fixing problems, or do they expect you to take the lead? * do they complain or sulk about hardship, or do they make the best of it? * what do you both find to talk about if you are stuck in a tent for hours? * can you spend time together alone peacefully, or does one of you always need attention? - Check carefully for class clues, because they are going to crop up as issues no matter which culture either of you marries into. * Does your partner know how to cope in social situations beyond the one they have grown up with? * Can they make conversation and build relationships with your family/friends/colleagues/strangers, or do they hide in a corner? * Do they understand which clothes are appropriate for which occasion (i.e. do they take high heels when camping, or only buy clothes from Uniqlo because they have never been anywhere more expensive? * Do they understand your culture's version of hospitality may differ; that non-Japanese people may enjoy having friends over to visit? Do they make an effort to welcome your friends, or disappear? - How independent do you expect your partner to be? * Check what they do with their spare time, because whatever it is, that's what you can expect them to do once you are married. If they have hobbies, that can be a good thing, because it will give them something familiar to do while they are still adjusting to a different culture. * You may find that your levels of independence are vastly different; in some cultures, everything is done in groups where the elders teach the newcomers, while in others, the expectation is that you will find ways to work things out on your own, and will ask for help when required. *How adventurous they are in other things may well reflect how they are in the bedroom, too. - Are they curious, and proactive at learning new things? * This aspect will impact your relationship more heavily than almost anything else. Curious people grow, learn, and improve over time. People who aren't will stagnate. * If your partner expects you to lead the way all the time, it can be exhausting, especially if it's just an attitude thing that doing so is "your role" in their head. * Having a proactive partner will help the relationship, because after a while, you will have each other's backs. Not having that will lead to resentment as one partner carries a heavy load. * A mentally lazy partner will hold you back financially and socially. Working at a minimum wage job when you first meet is nothing to be ashamed of. Working at the same job a decade later because your partner refuses to study, or to try something else, is a waste of everyone's time. - Can your partner reflect upon their behaviour, and improve as a person over time? * You need to learn to argue/fight well with each other. Retreating into sulking, or pretending that last night's issue is over, if you haven't talked it through properly, is corrosive, as the underlying issues are still there. * How does your partner view age - is it a positive thing, or do they try to defy gravity, and pretend it's not happening? What is their self-esteem based upon when their looks inevitably fade?

Marrying for the wrong reasons will just spill disaster for both parties. The obsession and fantasizing of marrying of a Japanese lady by foreigners usually stems from Japanese media being aired oversees; manga, animes, films, j-pop, foreigners see the Japanese females as larger than life based on the way they were exposed to Japan via limited ways. So when they end up marrying a Japanese woman, their illusions gets dispelled, reality kicks in and they end up with having life regrets. Marrying for the male reasons of unlimited sex, turning a tourist visa into an indefinite stay visa, getting a permanent residency, dual citizenship; these are real life practical reasons. But as selfish as they are, but if you are simply driven by these reasons alone then your marriage will eventually will work

Nice video. But what I felt from my experience on seeing friends here is that the Japanese partner doesn't like to confront an issue and talk it out to find a solution. They just wait it out or just don't mind it. It's deep rooted from their culture to avoid unpleasant situation. I feel that any problem between a couple should be solved with a one on one unpleasant talk. But one can never expect this from a Japanese partner. However, there might be outliers to this broad generalization.

Question-1 9 years Question -2 JapanCupid while in Japan, didn’t care for the Club/Bar life. Question-3 Japanese women felt more feminine to me than Americans. Obviously that’s not a universal standard, but from my experiences they are very girly and genuinely appreciate and admire gentlemen acts. Like holding doors for example. The dynamics of male/female interactions have changed radically in America and those acts are becoming more a sign of weakness and un attractiveness. Question - 4 Initially, 2-3 times a day. 2 children later, it needs to be scheduled and planned. I’d say if I was adamant about it I could manage once a week maybe twice if I’m lucky. I generally save the suggestion till safe day for unrestrained activities lol. Bonus Question- Use your imagination, don’t feel so ashamed of what excites you. If you wanna pretend your pregnant wife is your concubine and your the king of a Shiro tasked with pleasing her as part of your king duties, go for it. Question -5 Many times, but as mentioned it would always blow over. Weather the storms cause they are unavoidable even in what you think is a perfect relationships there’s always a maelstrom behind those smiles. Everyone’s a package in this world, they will always have things about them that you love and things you’ll hate. It’s up to you to decide what bad you’re willing to tolerate for the good they bring. Question -6 I would say research the culture from a variety of sources first. And understand that if something they get angry about or frustrated with you about comes from totally different views of the world. Always try to show empathy and pay attention to if she can do the same. With the culture difference there’s bound to be misunderstandings. I recommend establishing a open communication agreement. Blunt true feelings as the issues arise.

I think this has nothing to do with nationality and culture. Things are not always the same, from girlfriend and boyfriend to tying the knot and having children. Stress, age, underlying medical issues, priorities, work, problems, and reduced hormone levels are factors that affect libido. Meaning, this is true to most of the couples regardless of race and ethnicity.

Yes, very sound advice. Get to know each other as much as possible before getting married. Good advice for everyone in the world. I have not been to Japan yet, but I would like to visit. I learned some Japanese language in high school. Our class was the first Japanese language course in Australia at the time. I was top of the class A+ even though I have Autism. Actually, Japanese language structure makes more sense than English. Our Sensei was from Tokyo and he was my favorite teacher, sometimes he was just like a comedian too! haha. My sister went to Japan a few years ago with her husband and kids for a vacation and they had only great things to say about Japan and the people were very friendly.👍✌

If a Japanese girl is so old fashioned as to treat you like the man of the house after marriage, then her family is likely old fashioned enough as to not approve her marrying a non-Japanese! Seriously though, I see conflict when westerners wanting _their_ notion of a Japanese lifestyle date a Japanese girl who wants a man who fits _her_ stereotype of an American/Brit/Canadian. I live in Hawaii, and there are many Japanese women living here who are married to American men. There's also a large Asian population, moreso than other states, which I think helps the relationships last. Think of being an American in Tokyo as opposed to Aomori-- which city are you likely to find English speakers, instructions, and see familiar faces? Then again, if you _really_ like apples, Aomori-- may not be so bad...

Marriage is a perpetual contract without any need to meet any KPI. There is no Service Level Agreement (aka SLA) in marriage certificate. That means it is totally up to both party involved. Means that either party can do whatever they want or don't do whatever and the contract will remain valid.

When I was a little boy, I told my friends that I was going to marry a Japanese woman(it was because I was watching the kaiju eiga on television that got me interested in Japanese culture). My friends laughed at me and told me that I have to travel to Japan and Japan is a long way away from where I live. I remember watching NHK news on public television to learn more about Japan. I have read about some Japanese husbands going to prostitutes to have their fun. The article concluded that the prostitute may have a husband’s body for the moment, but the husband’s heart belongs to the wife. I am 56. I will turn 57 next month. I have never married. Nor have I had a serious girlfriend (I have always had mostly platonic relationships). It had been lonely at times but my life of solitude was by both circumstance and choice. I have this mantra that I live by you can share it with others. “Drama-free is the way to be.” How does that read in Japanese? Peace

Definitely plan on taking an extended stay in Japan to say the least just to get a feel for the land and culture and stuff more personally instead of just reading about it or learning through anime. I find Japanese women insanely beautiful but honestly there's so many videos that make it seem like marriage to a japanese woman is super rough or they have these like... *crazy* high expectations or something. It kinda gives me the impression if you marry a japanese women especially you can kiss any and all dreams and future plans goodbye if you want the relationship to be stable or something. It's definitely given me a lot to think about.

While I've never had a Japanese wife I've enjoyed the company of a Japanese girlfriend much earlier in my life. Because she was the daughter of an official at the Japanese embassy she was urbane and cosmopolitan in her ways. She could switch in a second twixt the subservient Asian girl to one that was confident speaking and interacting with white people, one on one. I used to call her my camillion girl which she though only mildly amusing. She shunned dating Asian men preferring more Anglo types instead. Where there is a smorgasbord available choosing only one dish is so stupid. Her words, but I do agree, with neither seeking anything long term with each other. Latter, her father was recalled to Japan prior to another overseas posting and so my friend was gone. No photos-nothing, only memories that show up every once in a while. She must be a granny now.
