R Tronic is fine as long as you shift it yourself and the R8 is anything but subtle. It's rare when I drive mine that it doesn't get a ton of attention. Good review!

It's a pretty common complaint in almost all Audi's that without driving in sport mode the car is very sluggish at shifting and shifts at really low RPMs, this is the case even with my A3

3:52 - I can stand turning mag ride ON (stiff suspension mode). In Colorado our roads are so rough you just get bounced around like crazy. I pretty much have to leave it in normal mode.

Thanks for the comments. The battery wasn't that big of a deal after you've done one on a Dodge Viper! LOL. Its really not that hard to change in the R8, more annoying than anything.

Hi. Great review. Am passively looking for one but am still in the research stage :-) Current ride is a 2016 F80 M3 and all past rides since 2003 have been the last 3 generations of M3's so the R8 is a big departure from what I am used to. How has the AC compressor held up in this? I heard that goes bad every 10-15k miles and is a PITA to replace since the engine needs to come out. Never test drive one and it's a substantial drop in acceleration compared to the current generation of M3's. Also wondering if that will factor in since now I am used to more power. Thanks.

The power on the V8 isnt great. Get the V10. The ac compressor was fine when I sold it but yes I've heard it is an engine out repair, which sucks.

Gearhead Daily Thanks for the quick reply. Didn’t realize you already sold it. I love the looks of the car but am still debating if it makes sense as the price point for a 2008 is similar to a GTR. Pretty happy with my M3 as well. How was your ownership experience? Does the engine have that visceral feel to it. I fear I might get it cuz it’s so gorgeous but may end up not loving the driving aspect of it. Thanks again. Cheers.

It was fine but the aftermarket sucks on these cars. Its either full out twin turbos or stock. I wanted something I could tinker with

Yea the sport off is irritating. My R8's only negative is the gearbox. I hate it when i accelerate and then the gearbox comes in and it feels like it puts the clutch in and then is deciding if it should shift up or stay in that gear.

I love the design language of the 1st gen R8. Pre facelift. I think the R8 became progressively worse looking with each facelift. I'm looking to buy one, with the S Tronic though... so maybe a low mileage one owner 2014-2015. An example like that are actually very hard to find locally. I'd have to be willing to fly to a different state or work with a dealer who will provide delivery. But do I really want to buy a car without having it driven and inspected 🤔

I'm looking to purchase a 2010 v8 r8 automatic and I was wondering if it's expensive to maintain? My other option was a cheaper 2010 Maserati grantruismo. Which one do you think is cheaper to maintain

The R8 is the cheapest super car to own, hands down. I would under NO circumstance buy a Maserati unless i hated money.

HAHA. Dude iv been looking at the same thing as you and figured out that the Maserati's break all the time. They are so unreliable. Plus if something breaks on the R8, it will be cheaper because Audi​ uses the same parts in most cars. Trust me the R8 will be 100x better

Its fine just as long you down shift during slow driving. You won't destroy it by leaving it in A mode

RE the phone connectivity ; you could get a bluetooth handsfree device that has an FM transmitter. BT to the handsfree kit ; fm to the car radio - quality is fine. I used one for years on my older cars.
