This wasn't a topic I was expecting on this channel. I went to Edinburgh uni back in the 90s and had a fantastic time. The clubbing scene was great back then - no idea if it still is. Yes, it's an expensive city but it's not too bad for students. I never used public transport at all - if you live centrally there's no need as it's pretty small, but if you go to the other three unis you'll need to use buses. I do miss Edinburgh but not the weather. Yes it doesn't rain as much as Glasgow but it's cold this time of year.

I love rain and the color grey (grey skies) and love fall, winter and spring clothes. I'm sure the summers there are beautiful.

I went to EU 40 years ago, I continue to have a relationship with the university today, and continue to have useful practical benefits for being an alumnus. One common risk of going to Edinburgh for study is that you won't want to leave.

The script opens with "the Gothic Old Town" yet, importantly, Edinburgh was the *first Modern City* Oh, and having performed at the Fringe 10+ years ago, the rain is real. And wet... it's really quite wet. (although, miracle of miracles, on a vine covered chain-link fence, by or near Holyrood Rd, there was just enough foliage in that dark, dismal, drizzly place to generate the sugar to produce one spectacular flower: a Passionfruit flower!)

While mostly positive, I've noticed these DW travel videos on the UK do like to raise a little eyebrow about the weather and food... As if Hamburg and Berlin are located on the south coast of France.

@@ardiris2715 as with most colleges and universities, these students got scammed into paying large sums of money to get useless degrees that they will never be able to payback or see a return on their investment.

It's not great. In the UK, the quality of university education is already bad. Subjects get covered superficially, and most of the study time is "independent study", whatever that means. UoE is more on the extreme side of this for most courses. And honestly, I can't blame the university. Students can't survive in the city just with student loans due to high rent, so there's an unspoken assumption that most people will have to work at least part time.

Isn't University of St. Andrews the oldest university in Scotland? Shout out to my alma mater, Heriot-Watt University! 🙌🏾

Christ, did the University of Edinburgh pay you make this advert?! I'm speaking as a local who left Edinburgh for another Scottish uni and returned over covid, who currently has interaction with students and staff at UoE. There's no mention of wide-ranging inequalities within UoE - most notably the ongoing fight for fair pay & conditions for staff, and the lack of accessibility for marginalised students, especially disabled, trans, and low-income students. No mention of how UoE neglects student safety, including with how they are prone to protecting perpetrators of sexual assault. No mention real mention of the housing emergency - how despite UoE being the 2nd largest landlord in the city, they fail to provide adequate housing for students. Many either to stay in private tenancies or private Purpose Built Student Accommodations (more and more often these are marketed as luxury accommodation geared towards wealthier students) where you have less rights compared to a private tenant (which can still be bad situation, limited legislation and enforcement means we have plenty abusive landlords who'd far rather evict you to avoid doing repairs or to cash in with using homes as Short Term Lets/AirBnBs). Both of which are overpriced and play a role in the worsening housing emergency. The rates of student housing insecurity and homelessness, and housing insecurity and homelessness in general, are shockingly high. No mention of how UoE impacts the wider community of Edinburgh, especially those of us on lower incomes. The role students, especially wealthy students, play in gentrification. Notice how this video only shows you the touristy part of town, not the real Edinburgh, not the true variation and inequality of this city. My home, my family's home for generations, isn't hogwarts-themed attraction for folk to live out their dark academia fantasies. There are many benefits with having multiple universities and a large (and international) student population in such a small place but to only show the positive snippits you have gives an embarrassingly narrow view of this city and the student experience. You're meant to be a news broadcaster, do your research.

I also studied in Edi (and still live here unfortunately), so I totally back your statement and was surprised to see such biased reporting, especially that it’s not that hard to find more exotic students here than for the US.

Hi there, we understand your feedback. There are certainly many more aspects to life in Edinburgh than the experiences of international students. The audience for this video are potential international students, though, and our department produces content on culture and lifestyle. If this were a longer news or documentary piece, we would indeed cover the elements you mentioned. However, we have only 6 minutes and we want to provide information for prospective international students.

Whenever i try to get further up north than Yorkshire ... heavy rain is coming in and drives me back south. From the perspective of Scottlands weathergods i must be some kind of Britsh invader, that has to be fended off. I they ever face a draught in Scotland ... maybe then they will pay me to come.
