About your comment on lure weight castability between the two models, I took an inventory of all the ultralight lures I normally use with UL spinning gear, and it’s over 100 different kinds (crankbaits, topwater, spinners, spoons, etc). I have weights on all of them, they represent the smallest size available for many common lures, and there aren’t any of them under 2 grams. About 60% of them are between 3 and 4 grams, and there’s a good number of them between 4-5 grams. So, perhaps that’s why the ‘17 model casts nearly everything I have for UL just fine. I don’t really use jigs or live bait much and those could be under 2 grams, but for general UL lure fishing, seems like both models should work without that weight concern.

Fan of your bfs content dude. Maybe one you could consider making a bfs bass/inshore salt lure videos. Something like a roundup of your favorites or most successful lures. Greetings from Florida!

Ha! I just found one just like that for your older videos. I’ll keep an eye out if you make any more like that. I’m a bass and inshore salt guy getting more into the bfs world. Have the combos but a little slim on the lure side so much appreciated!

I’m a Tallahassee FL native! Originally from Jacksonville. I like to drop a lot of lure recommendation while making videos. Wait until you see my next video! I’ll be testing the cqbfs in salt and I try some jdm techniques that LAY INTO some seatrout!

Brass is softer and has more toughness than aluminum. From an engineering standpoint toughness is the ability for a material to absorb energy and deform without fracturing. So while aluminum is stronger and harder and ideally the better material for gears, brass gears are normally preferred because they are cheaper, easier to cut and have the benefit of deforming in a fashion where they dont sheer off but wear in. Now if the cutting of the aluminum gears in dead on it changes things and aluminum can be incredibly smooth. With brass, tolerances can be wider and your gears will still mesh well. So in theory if you take an aluminum gear set and compare it to a brass gear set that have both been regularly used the less tough aluminum might feel grindy while the brass has worn itself in. Realistically I have reels with aluminum and reels with brass and they both are sufficient.

Definitely appreciate the input. I think it’s important to kinda gather all info regarding it. Maybe with duralumin and the tolerances within this new model, we see a less likelihood of wearing out over time. Especially with the fact that I believe they do include duralumin gears on the newer Calcutta conquest 100/200s. (Correct me if I’m wrong tho)

Yeah I don't think these gears will be wearing out. For general use, especially with BFS I can't see the average angler really killing reels outside of blatant neglect. Duralumin is a trade name for 2000 series aluminum. I am guessing the gear set is 2024 aluminum. Mechanical properties for 2000 series aluminum are definitely viable for gears but it comes to how well my are made. The general internet take is that Shimano has struggled making aluminum gears and can't figure it out as well as other brands. Now I don't have any proof on that and I am not sure that a good number of the people claiming it have objective evidence either. End of the day, enjoy the reel. I have reels that are high end and lower end that have either brass or aluminum. I am not particularly hard on them but I also don't maintain them either and I have yet to see a grindy gear set. You mentioned it but with these 2000 series aluminum gears salt is a big no no. That is a bigger issues than your gears grinding.
