Being a new owner of a Honda car I wanted to know more about direct injection reading up on forums I guess all DI engines have a known problem of carbon buildup inside the ports because the PCV system pumps un-burned blow by back into the intake system it accumulates right above the valves. The older style port injected engines would clean this off because fuel was always being sprayed on the valves. Still had build up of gunk in the throttle body. What I have read is the intake has to be removed and then the intake ports have to be cleaned on a DI fuel system. I guess Toyota and Nissan are installing port injectors as well to clean the ports as you drive sprays little fuel in there. From what I read this doesn't start to effect engines until 60k miles also was stated Turbo engines if they leak oil past the seals that also builds up carbon same spot even worse. With Viking buying used engines wonder if these intakes should be inspected prior to installing the engine and monitored at so many hours. One way to fix this problem for aircraft engine is just vent the crank case to a oil tank catch instead of using the PCV valve typically with out some sort of suction can cause more build up of un-burned sludge in the oil system.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqOvf3edp66qabc

blastman8888 all blow by goes overboard unlike in the car engines for epa standards, so we don’t have the same issues etc.

It's interesting that you pick a high revving honda engine. Wouldn't a engine that makes power at as low an RPM as possible be more suitable?

The engines in the Lycoming IO-360 class all support constant speed propellers. Will the new Viking 180 also support constant speed props?

Actually, your question seems to reflect some misconception as to what a constant speed prop requires. Constant speed props are not allowed in the LSA category by regulation, not because the engines cannot be fitted with them, but the LSA regulations are designed to make the function of the aircraft to be less complex. Less experienced pilots, less complicated plane.

That intake manifold looks very restrictive. Is it made that way for packaging reasons ?

I was wondering about that too. Viking should get together with a tuner shop that specializes in tuning Honda engines, like ENDYN, they could build some amazing engines together.

Intake does not matter with boost. Pressure is the same everywhere, no matter what turns you make.

True, it just makes the turbo work a little harder, but that's not really all that detrimental. The only thing that I would be concerned about is that the cylinders were all receiving the same amount of air.

Viking Aircraft Engines Not so much. There's flow, so there's pressure drop across. With turbocharging you can make the turbo compensate, only if the wasegate senses the pressure after what causes the drop. And it doesn't mean all cylinders get the same pressure. Still, what is the reason for that detail ?

What will the TBO be on the honda as direct injection leads to carbon deposits?

DI leads mostly refer to being used in cars that use low RPM, in the aircraft it is higher RPM and no issues with lead deposits.

They were pretty lacking in power output, unless you're talking about the DOHC ZC series engines.

@@eggenfellner Wouldn't 100LL ruin your catalytic converter? As well as possibly foul spark plugs? I've seen a lot of certified Champion Plugs producing 0 spark due to lead fouling.

I keep reading this online about the "used" part of this engine being undesirable. I've driven Honda Engines very hard that were decades old with 10x the mileage of these Viking conversions with absolutely no engine related issues. Only Issue I ever had with a Honda was transmission failures. I've never heard of a Honda engine failing at low mileage from manufacturing defects. However there are plenty of 2 stroke engine failures at very low hours. FAA was also leery of MoGas; but I've seen several certified aircraft with lead fouled spark plugs producing no spark.
