When my grandmother died young my grandfather took their son to live with him in San Francisco but left their daughter, my mother, with a neighbor. She was 12 years old. The neighbors tried in vain to contact the father with no success. They took very good care of my mother and eventually gained court appointed guardianship of her. She lived with them until she graduated high school. She then went in search of her father and brother only to be met with "you can live with us so long as you cook, clean and do all the chores. You can sleep on the floor." Needless to say, she opted to find a job and become self-sufficient. This is an example of how Associations, like neighbors, can make sense of an otherwise unconventional "family". She was a great mom.

God bless her!! I bet you had the best mom ever after what her experience was. I found out at the age of 52 that my dad, who raised me with my 3 older sisters, wasn’t even my biological dad. My mom left him while pregnant with me, left my oldest sister who was 9 at the time with a note telling him she left to go to her mothers and wouldn’t be back. Apparently my dad and sisters were coming home from the mall one night and my oldest sister saw me on a street corner, pointed me out to my dad and said that’s our sister lynn. She said I wasn’t dressed properly for the weather and when my dad called my mother to question her about it, she said she couldn’t find a good sitter to watch me while she was working. So he took me from my mom at 18 months. I found out he was pretty sure I wasn’t his but didn’t care, he raised me and treated me as his own, I never knew, not even a hint. I lost my dad within a week of my 22nd bday, I was heartbroken. I married and had a daughter by the time I was 30. A cousin from my dads side made a comment that there was a huge secret and spilled what he heard. I didn’t believe him, but asked my sister who said well, mom just told me she had a secret. Long story short when confronted with the question my mother said as far as she was concerned he was my dad. I dropped the subject but 22 years later I decide to do dna test to trace my dads family because he was an orphan at the age of 9 and didn’t know anything about his parents and what happened to 5 of his siblings. That’s when I found out I had a different father than my sisters. I guess mom never thought that I would find out, of course she passed away by the time I learned the truth and so did my biological father, who was married when he had the affair with her and he and his wife never had any children. He lived 10 minutes away from me my whole life and I never knew. I believe my dad was the best dad ever, even though he kinda thought I wasn’t his he made sure I would never feel differently, to the point that I was the spoiled brat, daddy’s favorite. They still tease me about it. Your mother sounds awesome!!

Oh, I am so looking forward to the refreshing groups, and multiple color code groups. But I am also looking forward to the associations. I am trying to write my family's history at my church and I have been tracking what church people were at based (among other things) by which minister married them. Associations would be so helpful for that!

I love the add the association. Who here does not have an oncle or ant that was only a family's friends but we where told as a kid, say hello to uncle Roger? haha Great add.

Best genealogy program out there in my humble opinion. Great to see so much energy still going into making it even better. A love the concept of Associations. It reminds me of Master Genealogist's ability to develop associations lists from roles in Events. I wonder if RM might consider adding that to its Associations capabilities in the future.

Very nice but doesn't give me anything new that I want. worried that if i don't purchase 9 I will lose updates to 8. Biggest problem with 8 was the loss of Rootsmagic togo

Could you have an association of Same Surname. I am working in a small area and there are several with the same surname that will probably end up related but I have not found the connection yet.

Ok I am technology challenged 😣. I just purchased RM8 last year from RootsTech. Do I just buy the upgrade, install it, what will happen? Will everything I have done on RM8 transfer onto RM9 ?? I wish I had better memory of how to use my desktop computer and it’s software (it’s only a year old) from before when I was working & long before I got my first iPad. Thank you in advance to anyone patient enough to answer my question. ☺️

I still use RM7 because after numerous attempts to transfer my data to RM8 if failed. The one time I got one file transfer, I found RM8 extremely different from all that RootsMagic programs I'd used.

@@paulhemingway6442 I never had RM before, until I purchase the RM8. Maybe that is why I don’t have any trouble as you have stated you have had(?). I hope you find a solution.

Please, please create a report that will be just like the narrative ancestor report that will show all of my ancestors' spouses and all of their blood children, not just the children who are full siblings to the child who is my next generation down ancestor.

Why add an associations feature to a genealogy program? There are tons of genealogy family information to do with our time instead of listing friends, employers, neighbors to our file. If the last version isn't broke, why try adding illrevalent features?

Some people can use it and it will be very helpful to them. Sounds like they are giving different ways for the different types of family’s that the world has.

Disappointed to see you are still using the horrible GUI from RM8. Maybe I am in the minority, but I much preferred the look of RM7. So I will not be upgrading.
