Their best bet to properly introduce the X-men into the MCU and differentiate themselves from the Singer-verse is to use the animated series for inspiration. They need to embrace the colorful, comic-accurate costumes, sentinels firing lasers, etc and just have fun with it. Singer took a more grounded approach and it worked, but now they need to bring us the live action version of what we grew up loving during the 90s. Even the actor who takes on the mantle of playing Wolverine should model his voice and performance after the animated version to avoid being so closely compared to Hugh Jackman. Really curious how it’ll all turn out

In Australia Deadpool will be rated MA15+ which means, as you would suspect, that you only have to be 15 to go and anyone under 15 doesn't have to be escorted by an adult, only by someone 15 and older. So this raises attendances even more.

I would take past popularity in other mediums and personal preference completely out of the equation and first see if the next two Avengers films result in downward box office results, audience sentiment, and critical reception. Why tear down one to build up the other when there can be both? If people are less interested in a Steve and Tony-less Avengers then the franchise will go the way of the dodo regardless of the X franchise's addition anyway. If interest remains, it would be monumentally stupid to dismiss a franchise that easily garnered over 1 billion dollars. Instead their approach should be one of caution and the reality of aging and exiting actors: maintain the established franchise, but grow the younger, fresher, long awaited franchise. Be sure the X-Men will be a consistent hit before downplaying the franchise that got them to the status they reached.

At best I'd say some of the multiple writers may be useful for input, but they'd need to be versed in writing for a movie's duration to tell a complete and not overstuffed narrative. X-Men '97 thrives on being jampacked, so there is a clear difference in tone they'd have to be strong in. I'm sure they'd give great input of characterization and motivations though. Each character felt distinct and had believable reasons for making their various decisions.

Thank you! A lot of people don’t realize that being a writer for hire, especially on the low end, simply means you wrote a script that was purchased and the studio can and often will completely tear it apart and rework it in ways that may not work but legally that writers name is still contractually credited to the final product.

100% agree with you, Dan, about DeMayo, and I'd take it even one step further. Being a showrunner of a good animated show, doesn't even necessarily translate into being a lead on a live action movie production. In any reality that it wasn't a toxic work environment that got him fired, at best his voice would be most useful as a consultant about the interpersonal dynamics of the characters, and establishing individual character personalities fitting of the lore around the storied X-Men. That would get him in the room for characterization, but I'd need to see more from him about handling live actors, placement of scenery, and a movie's pacing before he'd earn the reigns to something like this. What worked in the show is too crammed to work in 2 hours of a movie. ...and still, bottom line is if he was revealed to be so hard to work with that the firing HAD to happen, being rewarded with the keys to the highest profile new entry isn't going to humble him.

One thing that I would absolutely love for the new X-Men movies is to bring back John Ottman's incredible X-Men theme song for the MCU's X-Men. John Ottman is a brillant composer and I adored his work on the Fox film series, but it's time to let go. New X-Men should mean a new musical identity to follow suit. Keeping the same theme would just muddy things (kind of like Spider-Man Homecoming using tunes from the Raimi trilogy). Also, TAS/'97's theme is iconic to the entire franchise and it's been due for a live-action debut.

Ive never fully enjoyed any of the FoX-Men films. Even the greats like First Class and Days of Futures Past have never felt like the X-Men to me. This is why I am very optimistic about Marvel Studios tackling these characters, the handling of X-Men 97 simply makes me that much more confident that they will do justice to the source material. The best thing Feige did was take time and not rush head first into making X-Men films once they had the rights. The studio understands how lucrative and important mutants are to the overall MCU.
@philcorrigan5641

I actually think it was a mistake to wait so long to start developing X-men, their most lucrative IP by far. That process should have started as soon as they got the rights back. @@philcorrigan5641 I couldn’t disagree more. No matter how well the studio is doing not taking the time to get it right will have repercussions that severely outweigh what ever short term financial gain they would receive. It could severely hurt the brand and the MCU as a whole. Also where the writer is concerned I never take stock in or worry about the resume of the writers or directors Marvel Studios chooses to work with. Just look up their history on how each film is developed and how many different people contribute to the final product. Invariably the first person to crack a story is never going to be the sole voice of that project. If they only let resumes dictate who makes films for them we would never have gotten the Russo Brothers whose last film credit before Winter Soldier was You Me & Dupree, or the powerhouse team of Markus & McFeely who narratively completely steered the MCU into greatness in phase 3.

Theres too much failing upward in Hollywood, let X-Men be the place the public can go in with high expectations instead of being pleasently surprised that a writer with a bad record just happened to pull it off.

When it comes to mutants and the X-Men as a live action franchise Ive seen so many convoluted theories about “introducing” X-Men into the MCU that completely undermine the entire sociopolitical concept of mutants in the Marvel universe. You don’t need explanations to justify mutant racism vs the popularity of heroes like The Avengers. Racism doesn’t make sense. You also don’t need to explain where mutant characters were in relation to past MCU films. It’s an unimportant concern too many fans put stock in. Why weren’t the X-Men fighting Thanos in Infinity War? Because they knew nothing about him or the situation.

@@DTC_95 Exactly! They’ve already “introduced” them without resorting to tying themselves into knots. I think eventually we are just going to be introduced to the X-Men the way they were introduced in comics. The multiverse/Fox universe inclusion has more to do with setting up worlds and universes that we are familiar with so that the impact of incursions and worlds being destroyed leading into Secret Wars has more meaning and weight.

They might have wanted to avoid any unnecessary negative publicity from one of their employees and decided to cut ties as a proactive measure. Ofcourse like you said Dan this is purely speculation. However we can't keep giving a pass to talent in front of and behind the camera just because they gave us great content. i think that x-men 97 is going to go on for a bit and be canonized as part of the multiverse, but it will stay isolated in their own reality for the most part. Maybe they will do a cross over in What If, but that will be the as far as they go with the idea. As far as Deadpool & Wolverine, I think it is going to serve as a proper swan song for the Fox iteration of the x-men. It is abundantly clear that we are going to get a lot of cameos, and most of them are probably going to be from the mutants. These are probably going to serve as a farewell from these version of the characters. Finally, I think the secret wars movies are going to serve as a in-universe reboot of the whole multiverse, and open the door for a new iteration of the x-men that will be introduced with the movie that is now in development. I bet that the new continuity will even shift focus from the avengers to the x-men.

Canonized how? Where it would matter is if it somehow influenced actual MCU events, got visited (even if in a live-action approximation we could recognize/accept as it) or some character from their continuity crossed over into an actual MCU film or show. That doesn't take anything away from how great it is in its own corner of Marvel though, and I expect it to keep going for as long as the seasons are as great as this one has been, or even a little less.

If, essentially, the entire staff is retained except for DeMayo, and it is true that he created a toxic work environment, I think '97 will be fine. The fact that they are only just hiring a writer for the new film suggests that it is a ways off, which I think is a good thing. It seems likely that Deadpool & Wolverine will lead to more crossovers with the FoX-Men in the new Avengers movies as part of the Multiverse Saga, and we will hopefully get another season or two of X-Men '97 during that time. By then audiences may be ready for a new take on the X-Men for whatever comes after the Multiverse Saga. If Marvel can do what they did with Spider-Man and focus on elements that previous adaptations haven't while staying true to the original ideas from the comics then I think there is potential for more great X-Men movies to come, and hopefully better consistency.

I think it's important to manage expectations for Deadpool & Wolverine. Only one R-rated movie (Joker) has made $1 billion, and that was just barely. The only other movie that's come close is Oppenheimer. I haven't seen any projections that D&W is expected to make $1 billion. I'm not saying it won't, but I think we have to be careful not to fall into the trap of expecting it to make a certain amount of money and judging it a failure if it doesn't hit that mark. There are lots of outcomes short of a billion that would still be a success.

The thing is, casual fans saw x-men first class and x-men days of future past and liked both movies, some fans even went online and excitedly found each other and shared fanfics and fanart about the characters, the different timelines and relationships (Cherik used to be a it couple in some parts of the internet) but I'm not sure they checked out x-men 97. Not everyone digs animated series, not everyone wants to give x-men another shot esp through another medium. I feel like it's mostly people who were already big x-men fans from way back then or from the comics etc who gave the series a chance and are very happy about it. The gp doesn't care much about all that.

The Guardians of the Galaxy were only known to comic readers before their MCU debut. To sell people on something new means taking a leap of faith and building over that. The good news is that the X-Men have established history beyond the Fox movies, be it the animated series or video games (specially those from Capcom). X-Men '97 has only debuted this year, so give it time; people will come around slowly but surely.

I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know that we need an MCU X-Men movie anymore. I’m kinda fine with these revivals of older versions.

This. Live action is always held in the highest regard, but animated and episodic is ideal for a comic book adaptation. The DC Animated Universe, SOME of Marvel's 1990s output and now X-Men '97...in the right hands, an animated series for teens and adults (not just for kids) trumps one live action film every three years.

Oftentimes, “difficult to work with” is what is required to produce phenomenal works of art.

I addressed this a bit in the video - that's been the overriding philosophy of Hollywood for decades. "It's worth it for the art." What has been learned the past several years is that it's not always healthy to have that attitude. Not everything can or should be excused in the name of making a good movie or show. My main point is that we don't know the extent of any sort of difficulty faced behind the scenes on X-Men '97, but the default position can't always be "if the show is good, it's worth it." There is a point at which a line can be crossed and if that line was crossed, actual human beings have to be considered. We just don't know at this point what the actual situation behind the scenes was.

@@DanMurrellMovies I disagree. Barring physical assault, if you don’t like your boss because he’s abrasive, find another job. Humanity shouldn’t be deprived of great works of art because someone doesn’t like the personality quirks of a genius. Sorry, but that’s reality. Greatness is usually derived from suffering and struggle and single-mindedness. This is why we don’t have much great art anymore.

He was a genius no doubt. That doesn’t justify some of his methods. I’d say the same about Hitchcock. It’s not about retroactively judging the past by today’s standards, it’s about moving forward with better ones.

@starlit_hawser11 Again, we don’t know what the work environment was like. There’s being abrasive and difficult to work with, which is unpleasant but sometimes just the way it is, and there’s being toxic and creating an unhealthy work atmosphere. If the latter was the case, then I’m saying that the needs of actual people should be considered. No one except for the people who worked on the show knows what actually happened.
