I sometimes regret buying all the things I did over the years because I now realize I don't need or want them. But like you said, it probably isn't 'regret' because I've learned from my past and have become the person I am today as a result.

After 13 moves in 20 years, the answer would be no. Items can be replaced, or you realize that they no longer served you. After losing three of my relatives in one month, including my husband of 20 years, I learned that no one can take anything with us when we die, material wealth is meaningless, it's people and your relationships that really matter.

I love watching and listening to your podcasts and these living room chats really serve as another connection. I regret the excessive time spent building a career. Now in what I consider my "retirement" job, where I can just enjoy being with others and my day, I've discovered that it's okay not to be constantly striving for the next level. It doesn't define who I am.

Before my husband died he lost our storage (with 99% of our belongings in it). And we had to rehome our pets. I regret losing the things that cannot be replaced. I guess it was especially difficult, because he lied about losing the storage until the week before he died. He gave me no opportunity to save it myself. This is a hard regret to let go of, even 9 years later, sigh.

Loved this video. I also regret not having spent time doing things that I want to do or spending more time with loved ones who have passed away. But as you said about letting go of those regrets, that is probably the most important thing to do in order to move forward.

I don't regret anything I've gotten rid of, but there's one item I lost (or rather it was stolen) that I miss. It was a blanket my grandmother crocheted for me for my 13th birthday. The last time she visited she dropped off a few old pictures of my family and I and one of them was a picture of me opening the box with the blanket. That gave me a little resolution to that feeling: now I have something to show my kids to remember that experience and who my grandmother is. She can't manage a project like that blanket anymore unfortunately (it was a huge, Queen sized blanket) but I have a lot of dear memories in its place. Joshua, since you introduced Ryan to minimalism, I've always wondered who you would credit with introducing you to that information. If an individual didn't introduce you to it then was who's work? Thanks for all your work, hope we meet and I'm very interested in your podcast on your health challenges as they sounds similar to things I've experienced. Take care!

I donated all my music manuscript as i didn't hadnt played in a couple of years and moved. About 5 months later I had a huge desire to play again and bought a piano. I regretted getting rid of all the books especially since I'd had an offer to teach some friend's kids where some books would've been SO handy. I've sat down and really thought about what I'd buy back and in the end there wasn't anything I truly wanted or needed to buy back anyway. I definitely felt better once I had mentally allowed myself to buy them back if I needed to!

The 20/20 rule sounds good as a sound bite. I timed my trip to the shopping center today where there is a grocery store, dollar store, hardware, and auto parts store--8 minutes with getting all the lights green. So the drive time is 16 minutes round trip. That means I have 4 minutes to find what I need, stand in line and check out. Chances are slim to none I could get all the lights green both ways, find what I need, and check out in 20 minutes. I'm keeping my just in case bins.

Regret is such a two edge sword feelings xxx I honestly learnt through this minimalist approach it’s more of regretting not spend more quality valuable time with love ones in my life. I think my husband is learning this with our 10 yr old son who is growing up wants to spend time with him but Dad is busy working and I feel his ( me husband) health is getting on the way of having a valuable relationship with him. How can minimalism improve your health or your relationship with others

@lemon1653

Try thinking that the price you paid wasn’t for the item itself, but for the experience of owning that item. So it paid for the excitement you had when you bought it, and it paid for whatever use you got out of the item. Now you can let it go.

@Lemon and Annainhalloweentown, Both of you are 100% correct! I'd like to add that you've also paid for the life lesson that you probably made a purchase that didn't have the need in your life you original thought it would when you bought it. So hopefully your next purchases will be more mindful.

I already regretted one brush which became necessary in just 2 days after I gave it away. I thought I had similar but they weren't as good for the purpose. I live in a small town and I can't replace it fast if at all because it was quite old. and it is uncomfortable when you lack the precision of an instrument.
@jesspurr
@jesspurr 6 жыл бұрын
You talk about being able to replace an item, but what if the item you let go is limited or one of a kind? I have let go of things and regretted it because the “thing” brought me joy and I ended up tossing it away in a fury of wanting to achieve minimalism quickly. To this day, I don’t even recall what the item was. Although it sparked joy for a while (and probably could have if I still had it today) this proves that material possessions aren’t what we are made up of. We are made up of human qualities that clearly matter more, not materialistic matter. Yes I have regretted letting some things go in the past, but over time, your own personal growth is what becomes a priority in the journey of minimalism.

In my two+ years into minimalizing my possessions and the one item I truly regret not keeping was my grandfather's wedding band. I am an only child and this grandfather's only grandchild. He and had a very special bond and were very close. I was offered nothing of his by my grandmother when he died and, remembering how one of my cousins on the other side of the family wore her deceased father's wedding band on her thumb, I asked if I might have my grandfather's wedding band. I always meant to have it sized so I could also wear it but never did. Selling the band was not connected as much with minimizing possessions as it was needing money at the time. I live on a VERY fixed disability income and had been selling gold jewelry I never wore and didn't need for cash. I thought long and hard about my grandfather's wedding band but I truly needed more cash at the time so I reluctantly sold it. That was almost a year ago and I truly regret selling it. Besides photos it is the only tangible memento I had from my grandfather. If I could go back to that day and keep the ring, I would. Watching it being cavalierly tossed into a cup with other gold I brought to the gold purchaser that day adds to my regret. The ring took up no space and I keep very minimal jewelry. I think about the ring at least one or two times a week and dearly wish I could buy it back, but know it has long since been melted down and sold for whatever gold buyers do with gold they buy.

SonshineLady Well things cd haf been worse. U managed to stay alive. Whats the lesson learnt? If u haf a more income,then u haf more choice. Mebbe brainstorm startg a side enterprise to bring in a little more money at the side without risking ur disability income. Do u haf a room to rent out? Start this and several enterprises. Then save up enough to buy back the ring. Haf the ring resized. The blessing is u found a non-stressful non-crisis yet very important motivation in life. Pray for ur grandfather for his soul too.

Some people think replacing things they already have is wasteful. To that I say-not being intentional is far more wasteful. Also, the $ you will save from being deliberate will far exceed any double purchase you may have to endure. Personally, I find a ton of joy in donating items to people who need them and will use them. I'd double buy anything if it helped someone, anyway. It all in between our ears.

I really enjoy watching these short videos and I have been thinking about posting this question since the beginning of the month.. My family loves to shop. Wherever we would go, we would buy something. I still join them now, but I don't buy anything anymore if I don't need it. However my family, especially my mother, gets offended when I don't buy something or when they want to buy me something and I refuse. I feel guilty and uncomfortable everytime this happens. And I'm not sure how to refuse without sounding preachy or like I'm judging. Thanks in advance!

There’s something you regret getting rid of. If there isn’t, then I submit you’re lying to yourself. That seems blunt, and my intent is to not be confrontational, but to make sure that we are constantly checking ourselves. This is something I go through on the daily in the name of improvement. There are things I regret in almost every part of life, but I let go of it and choose not to dwell on it. It doesn’t lend itself to a successful lifestyle or rewarding life.

I can't decide if, as a mother, that's something that's sort of... heartless of me to let go of, you know? I'd say at 10 she may be of an age to decide what she'd like to get rid of herself. I'd try sitting with the items, tell her the attached stories and ask her what she would like to do with them. If she wants them she could keep them in her room, if not they could bless others as a donation.
