Yes! Seeing this both warms & breaks my heart. Rural Americans have retained their sense of patriotism… brotherly love of countrymen. City people, rich & poor, not so much. I’m Canadian, in a small town. Here, city & country, it feels like people don’t know or care about each other anymore. They don’t reach out to help, nor reach out for help. When anyone does they are treated with subtle contempt. Those with integrity & know how are few and far between… people aren’t interested in rights much less responsibility. This confirms my base concern for the impacted folks... winter is coming fast. The immediate response is wonderfully blessed, BUT there is the question of HOW to ensure adequate shelter to get them to spring in a scoured landscape. More flooding will occur as the debris fields have choked off creeks and the rainy season is here. The personal pain of cleanup and rebuild will take mortal courage on their part and continued help and support from the broader community.

I have received a lot of hate for stating what I have experienced here in Western North Carolina. There is a highly possible factor involved in lack of government response in rural areas. Outside of Asheville, a high majority of people are Conservative. The number of voters affected by Hurricane Helene in NC, according to the NC board of elections is 1,275,054 and of those 292,836 are registered Democrat.

I thought I would put this out there. As a retired lineman for the phone company. When you get power back, the roads are repaired, the cell sited are up and working, the bridges are being rebuilt, those people require money for what they do. All the companies involved get FEMA money. We are out there day and night as quickly as possible. Our expenses, truck fuel and maintenance. Replacing poles, wire, cable, sleeping in our truck. And after assessment, money to rebuild. Just saying

You are pretty much the only commenter to go to that ugly place of hating on government. Everyone else here is clear that help is help and both kinds of help are essential and helpful. Maybe if you aren’t totally ensconced in your bubble thinking you can still join the ranks of people who are about doing something to help, focusing on bettering things- not praise, then pooping on and blaming. This disaster is huge. This region is not easy to access. We are retirees and will donate monthly as much as we can fit in our budget for a year to Musicians of Mercy and other organizations public and private. Plus, we are sending all sorts of clothes and things from our home in good enough condition to share.

NC will recover. We americans will see to that. Watch when rebuild starts the contractors will donate their time. Places like home depot Lowes etc will give supplies. This is my hope for NC and all states affected.
