I'm just a civilian....but I have to agree with you for several reasons. First you mentioned that several candidates dropped after the first day of boot camp. These are individuals who at the end of the day discovered/made the choice that they were not cut out for the military? Without this gut check, when would the candidate make that choice--1 week, 2 weeks into training? This doesn't seem "fair" to me---the other candidates who may end up getting smoked along side this candidate, to the instructors who have to waste time and energy on somebody who can't hack it, and on the candidate themselves? Secondly---I thought the whole purpose of boot camp, beyond the breaking down and building back up of the individual into a soldier was to (as much as possible) was to simulate the stressors of combat situations? How does that 100 yard thing equate to what was in the Shark Attack? (I guess I've always been of the mentality of "rip the bandaid off?" Finally, will finish with a quote from a favorite of mine: "Boot camp is made as hard as possible; it’s not sadism; it’s surgery. The operation? Cut out anybody who can’t meet the MI’s standards." (Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers)

I think the shark attack needs reinstated, but I also think it needs to changes. Keep the shark attack mentality, but mix up how it's done.

even though this is old news i need to give my informed opinion as someone who has been through a shark attack and studied psychology in things such as discipline, training, team building, etc i feel like Matt's concerns about removing the "shark attack" from basic training stem from a nostalgic view of military tradition and a misunderstanding of how modern warfare and training have evolved. While the shark attack may have held a certain historical significance, its effectiveness in preparing soldiers for the complexities of modern warfare is questionable at best. Matt's assertion that the shark attack is crucial for instilling discipline and mental toughness lacks empirical evidence. In fact, studies in military psychology and organizational behavior have shown that positive reinforcement, clear communication, and team-building exercises are far more effective in fostering resilience, adaptability, and camaraderie. The new approach to the first day of basic training, emphasizing teamwork and trust-building, aligns with these findings. By fostering a sense of shared purpose and mutual respect between recruits and their leaders, the Army can cultivate a more cohesive and effective fighting force. Moreover, Matt's claim that basic training has become "easy" is simply untrue. The standards for physical fitness, marksmanship, and tactical proficiency remain as rigorous as ever. The removal of the shark attack doesn't diminish the intensity or challenge of basic training; it simply replaces an outdated and potentially harmful practice with a more modern and effective approach. Furthermore, the shark attack has been linked to several negative outcomes, including increased stress levels among recruits, a higher likelihood of injuries, and a potential for creating a toxic training environment that discourages potential recruits. By prioritizing positive reinforcement and teamwork, the Army can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment that attracts a wider range of talent. A study by the RAND Corporation found that positive leadership and a supportive training environment are key factors in recruit retention and overall morale. It's also crucial to recognize that today's recruits are different from those of past generations. They are predominantly volunteers who have made a conscious decision to serve their country. This intrinsic motivation eliminates the need for harsh discipline and intimidation tactics like the shark attack. In conclusion, while the shark attack may hold a certain sentimental value for Matt, its removal from basic training represents a positive and necessary step forward. By embracing a more modern, evidence-based approach to training, the Army can better prepare its soldiers for the challenges of the 21st century and foster a more positive and inclusive training environment.
@tmzz36093 жыл бұрын
Shark Attack serves no purpose other than to remove people who truly don't want to be there. Its a volunteer Army. If you think it's necessary, do it at the recruiter. Do it at MEPS. Then you save tax payer money not shipping people around the country just to find out they didn't even want to volunteer for the volunteer position.

Week 8 of Army Basic Training for 11 Charlie’s. every platoon carry’s 3 240s ,2 249s, 10-15 water containers, 2 base plates/canons/bipod (ie motor system), 9 MRE boxes, 6 block radios, 2 RM barriers and Friendship/Teamwork/Humility/Honor (one of the big ass logs) for about 250 meters. It’s a hundred yards from the busses to the area where we have the equipment then carry all of that down a trail to our bay and CTA area. Place it all back in the exact order you took it from in about 30 seconds. If not done in 30 seconds we must do 15 burpees and try again until we succeed or the next platoon arrives. If we succeed we get smoked until the company is done if we fail we get smoked until the company is done. Then we form back up, drills ask random privates questions about our occupation ie how far is a M4’s area effective range (800m). answer wrong and the platoon gets smoked, if right he asks the next guy and if he gets it wrong we do double. Rinse repeat until shower drills.

I went to basic June-September this year at Fort Leonard Wood, and we kind of had a shark attack. It wasn't when we initially got to basic, but the first day after our quarantine phase. They had us all get in formation in the PT bubble, then all the drill sergeants ran in screaming at everyone, made people do pushups, get in the front leaning rest, etc. It probably lasted like..20-30 minutes? I honestly don't remember lol But we didn't do this new 100 yards thing, it was just a modified shark attack that was still stressful, but not as bad as they seem like they used to be.

Hey Matt, I made it to the end of the video! I've never been in any branch of the military, but I've watched a lot of your videos and I'm fascinated by your experiences and the insight that you bring. Several of my friends and family members have been in all different branches of the US military, and it's great being able to learn more about their journeys from a new perspective. I've had a few thoughts about the shark attack vs. first 100 yards. I'd like to play devil's advocate for the first 100 yards a little, just for food for thought. Obviously my perspective is that of someone who hasn't been through BCT, but as someone who is considering whether or not they would potentially choose to do so, so if you or anyone else reading this feel that me not having been in the military disqualifies me from doing so, that's fine. The closest thing I ever did to military training was seven years of martial arts throughout my childhood. Some aspects of it were similar: we had a rank system and had rules for how to address those who outranked us, always using "sir" or "ma'am", etc., we had the creed, we had standards of behavior, formations... But one big difference was, our seniors also addressed us as "sir" or "ma'am", and it was important that the respect flowed both ways at all times. We respected them for their seniority over us and the skill that they had spent lots of time and dedication to hone. They respected us for our dedication to continue learning at every opportunity and our hard work. And when the time came that we had learned and grown enough that we were teaching others, we were expected to show them the same respect as we were shown. When I see videos of the shark attack, I think a lot of it comes across as yelling for the sake of yelling. The way you describe it as "making you transition from a civilian mindset to a soldier mindset very quickly" makes a lot of sense, but it also seems like it's more of a "scared straight" approach, making people fear getting punished and intentionally confusing them in an attempt to make them screw up. When the draft was going on, and people who may not have chosen a military path were being forced to anyway, I can see the necessity of setting that tone right from the start. With the US military now being an all-volunteer force, however, I can kind of see the value of having your first experience upon getting off the bus being something more visibly constructive. From what I've seen of the first 100 yards, it looks like it's still pretty intense, just in different ways, and it seems like it sets up more of an atmosphere of, "Hey, we literally just arrived today, and look, we already achieved something together, we can do this!" rather than "It's us against the drill sergeants (in terms of trying to make sure you don't incur their wrath and get punished)." I can imagine that for some people, the first 100 yards might be too soft, and not instill enough discipline, as you suggested. However in others, I think they'd find it a lot more motivating than just having to endure getting yelled at. Respect for authority because you fear their wrath is never as strong as respect for authority because you genuinely feel like they're steering you right. When I watch videos of the shark attack, what I see subjectively is hazing. When I watch videos of the first 100 yards, I see a challenge that makes me want to achieve it. So I guess I fall into that second category of people, rather than the first. Again, just some thoughts that crossed my mind! Hope they don't seem silly. Thanks for all of the videos you've made and experiences you've shared with us!

I ended up in a quarantine camp due to most of my squad bay testing positive for covid so they sent all 96 of us and the medical checks they did every morning there led them to find something that eventually resulted in my medical seperation. Im definitely re-enlisting with the proper waivers but covid has messed quite a bit up.

Going to army recruiter Monday any tips from anyone been trying to decide between marines or army, infantry either way
@countersteer7134 жыл бұрын
To anyone looking to be broken down to a mere body and then built into a fighter with immense resolution, discipline, and courage... Join the Marines. Seriously. Even coast guard training is more intense than this glorified boy scout training. Same level as Air Force training. I'm glad I made the right choice. Boot camp is supposed to be hell. It's hell for everyone. The difference is attitude. Take that incentive training and smoke sesh as a necessary part of the process to instil discipline into you. Inspire you to strive for perfection. You're representing your country when you put on that uniform. Strive for excellence.

Military training has been trauma-based training. Food and sleep deprivation, exhaustion, triggering fight or flight to override it. The added verbal abuse wasn't as effective as it seemed. The VA found in research that 80% of us who join the service experienced trauma at home, and joined to leave it. We were already primed for discipline before we left for BCT. People who left an abusive, raging parent, steps off the bus to a raging DS, becomes a more traumatized person who follows orders, but suppresses emotions, and was later more likely to become suicidal. Shark attack just creates a dissociated mind that will ultimately breakdown later. The stress of basic is already a given. Conditioning just requires repetition. Is like how pilots get good at what they do. The stress is inherent to the job, like combat. No bullying DS required.

Can you do a video on whether or not you’d ever consider being a recruiter? Maybe even discuss the pros and cons of being a recruiter and things such as pay grade, commission, bonuses, quotas, etc.? I would love to here more about that
@PinstripeJim4 жыл бұрын
He should not do a video on this because officers are not recruiters. His advice is crap. Only a recruiter should do a video about being a recruiter.

Army infantry needs it so bad, I was at fort Benning last year and thankfully I was able to experience it and when I was leaving watch new cycles do it, but even when we were doing it so many guys were just undisciplined and wanted to act worst than the kids I went to middle school with 🤦🏾♂️
@SFGiantsfan97974 жыл бұрын
The sucky part about this is that I signed my contract in mid August and they go on ahead and did this. The marines still do the shark attack this is a little annoying. I want to make a career out of this but if it creates bad enlisted members then I'm not even sure if I should change branches after my 6 year contract
@matthewj24924 жыл бұрын
Be careful with that, if you have the job (MOS) that you really want stick with it. Getting the right MOS is hard enough, and other branches of the service may not have it. Or you wind up waiting several months to get want you want and head out. All service branches are constantly tweeking their training.

I went to Fort Jackson and was the 2nd corona cycle, we barely got a shark attack, they did like a baby 5-8 min shark attack, you know that thing where drill sgts tell a trainee to go one way and a drill sgt says to go the opposite way, I only saw that once, I was disappointed and we weren’t even allowed to breathe in the gas in the gas chamber

OSUT for everyone should fix the discipline problem. Just because you passed BCT doesn’t mean a damn thing. Or bring hazing back. Story time! There once was a soldier that was such a grade A pos his team leader gave him a potted plant to carry around. It was considered an inspectable item. Every where this soldier went, the plant went too. And when asked by anyone why he had this plant, from squad leaders to sergeant major’s, he would reply, “To replenish the oxygen I’m stealing from the rest of you!” The soldier eventually found discipline... or he gtfo of the army and it has been better for it ever since.

Hey Matt (or other person, I'm open to anyones opinions) completely unrelated question that I could used answered or pointed in a direction to get it answered (I'm waiting to see a recruiter till after pandemic) When I was 18 and under my medical records have a bunch of lies because I had a health problem that required surgeries (it's a army passable health problem) but at the time my insurance wouldn't cover it unless I had a bunch of other stuff so my doctor's threw everything they could on my record to keep my insurance and have my insurance pay for surgeries, how would I mention that and explain it? Also atm I'm suffering from anxiety and depression BUT it's being caused by mold poisoning (I'm poor and it's bad living conditions) basically everything wrong with me that's DQ is either false or because of a outside illness that will go away, do you think that will make me able to join or get a waiver to join? I understand you're not the person to ask more so I'm hoping you'll be able to point me to a place to ask and yes I plan to talk a recruiters ear off with all these questions and many more 😂 my dream is to join the military and I'll do whatever I have to, jump through whatever hoops. Thanks for all the information has really helped!

I think the first 100 yards is better than the shark attack. The first 100 yards will make you respect and trust the drill sergeants, which is good for the rest of basic training. But the shark attack makes you want to punch the drill seargents the face.

I feel like there is a major shift occurring as far as doctrine. We are shifting towards near peer conflict again. We did not have a shark attack during our last major near peer conflict and we won that war. As a fellow officer, I’m expecting you to think bigger picture. Questions you should ask yourself. 1. When was the shark attack first implemented? 2. Why was it implemented? 3. In the past, the shark attack was happening but you claim new soldiers are undisciplined. Okay, why are they undisciplined still? Where is the failure? I challenge you to find SMA Daly’s quote about leadership. My scariest, but most respected DS’s at Infantry OSUT hardly ever yelled but you knew they meant business. I’d like to know your thoughts, officer to officer. You know that behind closed doors, trainees still get scuffed up.
