In today's episode, we aim to make life easier for ourselves! We start by finishing up some bronze ingots and getting some more molds for nails and strips. Then we build a little tower on our house and build our windmill atop it! After a brief foray through the most distant translocater we've found, we mine out some limestone and bring it back to grind--look ma, no hands!

Thank you! Glad you're enjoying it! A good part of the accelerated progression is that in the first season, we spent a few episodes in the initial starting area and then spent some time looking for and finding the location to build our house, so we didn't have two "first house" episodes this time around. I also held out on a windmill in the first season until I could bring my vision for the Lupine Ridge estate to life, but windmills are actually a pretty simple thing to put together, even in the copper age!

This is a huge problem. We don't have sealed axles block. So that a lot of negative consequences are affecting the game such as no quern in the kitchen or smithing blooms which are getting cold in seconds during the winter. So the actual solution is to place quern and helve outside/separate "room". In you case it is about to make small room/bubble around the quern upstairs, with trapdoor to access it, or move it outside.
@benben-fz2es
@benben-fz2es Жыл бұрын
Aesthetically the bubble may be made with trapdoors too. Trapdoors are isolators.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh Жыл бұрын
Yeah, we could really use a sealed axle block for situations like this. Not to mention, cellars don't HAVE to be completely enclosed--and for aging bleu cheese, you have to have a hole in your cellar. So why not rooms, too?

If you power the quern from below, you *can* seal a room with a quern in it - the bottom half of the quern counts as a sealing block so you can run an axle underneath the quern, as long as the axle doesn't come into the room itself it'll be sealed.
@benben-fz2es
@benben-fz2es Жыл бұрын
@@gmc9987 good idea as the powered quern also powers the upper side axle. So the system could look as quern being that magic axle block. Needs tests and checks.

Yeah, the game counts any valid room that fits within 7x7x7 as a cellar (as long as it doesn't have enough glass in the roof to be a greenhouse, that is). So you can actually make an entirely wood and glass cellar - it just won't store your food very well.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh Жыл бұрын
I thought wood specifically couldn't be used to qualify as a cellar? Or is it just "worse" than stone/dirt? I haven't experimented with that!
@gmc9987

@@Kurazarrh It's just worse. As far as I can tell, cellars aren't all-or-nothing, they take te ratio of "good" cellar blocks to "bad" cellar blocks and use some sort of math to spit out the decay rate for each location in the cellar.

I realise it would take up precious space/mats* , but would the clutch or brake help with the quern noise & despawning "feature"? [ for despawning: as in, if one were going away-from-base for a while, one could flip the clutch off to a quern (or brake on the main shaft), stopping the process, but with the ease of just being able to flip it back on upon return, doesn't stop the despawning, but makes the toggling of the processing more lazy :) as it doesn't require breaking things or emptying things to shut it up or protect from material loss ] - I don't want to play the game for you of course :) Just that I remembered that you never used either clutch or brake on [e.g] the noisy hammers for the last season, so I wasn't sure if you had an aversion to them other than the materials and space/planning needs? - anyway :) my main thought was "aww, i wanted to see how the clutch or brake was best used, this seemed the perfect opportunity to try them out, maybe he'll save that for future hammer time stopping situations" [ aside and if i were to have a wish-list for your buildings (far be it from me to actually critique them, in all their splendour) - it's that you don't seem to make your power axles a "feature" of the builds... here I'm thinking of your cog-wheel basement at Lupine Ridge - which always made me feel you were embarrassed for them down there, hidden away - rather than on full display in some shaft support structure decorated in your expertly chiselled way :) - too early in this game to care about such adornments of course, but just note I'm watching, and judging :)) ] anyhew, be assured I won't be grumpy if you choose not to complicate matters with such machinations :) I'm certainly not posting to complain "you're doing it all wrong", or coerce into an unnatural style - I'm just here to throw some bits of my brain into the idea-quern and see what plops out into the chutes of design :) * if the response is "One word : Resin." then please ignore everything I've said, and carry on as you were :)
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh Жыл бұрын
Well, resin is certainly one aspect of it, but for this simple setup, I think the bigger issue is that I'm not certain that you can place transmissions or brakes on the sides of blocks... but I also haven't experimented with that! Might be something to find out about later. I do tend to hide the mechanical bits in dedicated rooms, and I wish I had gone back to the mechanical room at Lupine Ridge to at least get rid of the dirt blocks everywhere! The honest answer, though, is that I don't find the gears and things all that interesting to look at, and because of certain limitations on placement, I think they're difficult at best to work into a build and have it look good. Especially since having a hole for an axle to enter a room removes all of that room's technical functions (our house no longer functions as a house due to the axle hole). For this season, I'm going to do another dedicated gearing room, but some of the axles might make an appearance in certain areas of the house. I'm not sure how yet, but I'll figure that out as I go! XD Maybe in the future we'll do a build where we have large gears in the ceiling or something, like a tinker's workshop!

If you're indoors or near a fire, you won't get cold, even if naked. There are other things that can affect this, since you can also change the world settings to give your character more resistance to the cold. Other than that, unless you get wet, it can actually take several minutes before your character starts to get cold outside. If you open the character screen, you can watch your body temperature. Fires (of any kind, even a burning house!) will keep you warm, for sure. Not in vanilla at the current time, unfortunately. There is a mod that adds a dedicated kiln, but it's a little beyond what I'm comfortable adding as far as mods are concerned, at least for a guide series that's meant to be pretty close to vanilla Vintage Story.

That's fair, the old TFC pack i play also has an addon for a kiln but not one default, sadly it requires fire clay which is no where near as straightforward as it is in VS, you gotta hunt for two separate uncommon/rare ores to grind into dust and mix with normal clay. Hopefully VS adds more post metal convenience technology like that

"KZ! But, you didn't remove the extra block (soil) above the angled gear in your tower! Meh immersion is le ruined" Your slender-mill is both compact-ful and impact-ful, bravo. Personally, I like being amongst the machinery and seeing all the moving pieces. So, I'm hoping that your designs for the forever-home include a more open mill that we get to see often. ...not that I would want you to do anything other than what's in your head.

:) Thank you! I've got some ideas for our forever home and its machinery that I think you'll appreciate, if you love the machines and mechanics. It'll be a little while before those plans come to fruition, but they'll make it here eventually!

In sure you've said it several times in past vids so my apologies if you've stated it, but do you have a mod that is letting you place items on slabs? I assume so cause I can't, regardless of how/where they're placed.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh Жыл бұрын
For placing items on slabs? No, I don't have a mod. But you can only place items on top of slabs (and upside-down stairs) if the top of the slab/stairs is on the "top half" of the block cube that they're in. Like, if you place a slab on the ground (on top of a full-cube solid block), you won't be able to place anything on it. But if you place a slab so that it is 1/2 block above the ground, it becomes an "upper half" or "top half" slab, and you can place items on it normally. You can't place items on vertical slabs or any block that doesn't have at least about 75% of its top surface fully intact.

@@Kurazarrh thx for the explanation! I'm fairly new to the game. No other block game experience previously. I'm about 100 hrs in (13 mths game yrs) and haven't really really found a purpose for slabs. Not even for flooring. I've only placed a dozen or so in various scenarios to see what they do.

@@splintercelloo7 Using slab top halves is handy for saving on materials, especially wood, which is somewhat work-intensive and slow to renew unless you have a massive tree farm.

@@Kurazarrh makes sense. Considering this is my first world seed I don't have much to compare to as for resources availability. This particular seed seems to be extremely bauxite rich which I'm only just learning why that matters. As for trees and climate, I seem to have availability to 4-5 tree species and they all drop a lot of seeds. I'm playing on as much of a survival mode as I thought I handle. I'm generally a minimalist type person, I don't really do grand-scale unless it serves a function first then appearance. Today I just accidentally found an hematite/iron deposit while exploring a cave that turned out to be pretty close to my starting location. I'm beside myself with how much I've gotten so far. Idk if iron typical comes in such large amounts, if so then I will certainly abandon copper age at this stage. I've really enjoyed your series. You manage to avoid going straight to spoiler territory on each topic which I value as it still allows me to uncover things at my own pace. You definitely got a sub from me sir!

What mod do you use to get the mold for nails and strips? I searched the mod db for nail mold (and most variationsof the name I could think of) and only found moremolds, which adds a whole bunch more molds that I don't particularly want. I suppose I could try deleting all the other molds from the zip but that seems to add a whole lot of places to make a whole lot of mistakes!

I thought I updated the name of the mod in the videos but I'll have to check. The full name is Clay Mold For Nails and Strips. You should be able to find it on the mod site if you just search for nails.
