I buy fresh Ezekiel bread from Trader Joe's and have to freeze it after 2 days. Otherwise, it molds. I like how Dave's killer bread the one with the red label has less sugar than the other Dave's killer bread. I also like how Dave's killer doesn't have to be frozen so soon and tastes better.

If you’re new to eating frozen Ezekiel 4:9 Bread from Food for Life let me give you some “how to” advice. It’s frozen to keep it fresh longer, and because it’s not full of preservatives found in most bread. For several years I kept it frozen and wrestled a piece off as needed and put it back in the freezer. That works, but some loaves will have more moisture than others and will be frozen solid. You’ll break slices trying to pry one off. That’s not the best way, and the instructions on the bag say to keep it frozen until you’re ready to use it, then let it thaw in the refrigerator. But who reads instructions. : ) Today, I always pull a loaf out of the freezer and keep it in the fridge until it’s used up. Just lightly toast it to preserve the sprouted grain nutrients.

Trust me I'm lazy, and since all the price hikes, I started making my own. Work a 10 hour day, and can easily prep, rise and cook 2 loaves in 3 hours and be in bed by 8 or 9pm. Edit - 2.5 hour are spent waiting on rise times. So you can watch tv, do laundry, dishes, chores, whatever you want. Very minimal effort

"Real" bread is in the bakery section. This aisle is only the sliced sandwich bread. Trust me, Americans do have "real" bread. It's families with kids usually who go for sandwich bread because of price, convience and consistency. It's worth taking a step back and trying not to be judgemental about what other people are eating. There are cultural, personal, and financial reasons people choose sandwhich bread over the bakery product. It's not "less real" just because it's not what you personally choose to eat. This is coming from a guy who bakes his own bread.

FYI: Ezekiel bread's inner wrapping isn’t vacuum sealed like some are saying here. It’s simply a loose inner layer of plastic wrapping - not an air tight vacuum seal. And yes most stores have it in a freezer section except Trader Joe's which has it for the best price at about $4.99/loaf now whereas Safeway, Whole Foods, Kroger etc sells it for ~$8.99/loaf. No Walmart near me so don’t know if they’re in line with Trader Joe’s or the others.

Sprouted grains unlock more carbohydrates. There's a reason you sprout barley before you make beer with it, and it's because it makes the carbohydrates available to yeast (and us). Enriched wheat flour is literally AP flour with the iron and essential b vitamins added back, since they are removed during the milling process. Buy whatever whole grain bread you can afford, they're all healthier than wonder bread.

The Italian bread we get has zero sugar and that's important for us. I prefer having sugar in a couple of cookies, but not in bread, pasta, breakfast foods etc. All those sugars add up fast.

You also must realize that as a baker, I have to use a type of sugar to feed the yeast. I also make sourdough, but those are yeast breads your showing and there has to be some amount of a sugar or it wouldn’t even have risen

Whole grain bread has added sugar. On the ingredients list it lists molasses as an additive

I don't mind the sugar in the Dave's bread, considering that everything else about it is healthy. And it tastes fantastic. I've tried the sprouted bread from Ezekiel but it just falls apart too easily and has a weird texture. It's not worth the hassle in my opinion. Maybe I'll check out the blue bag bread.

There’s nothing wrong with the cheaper bread. Your body needs sugar/carbs to survive. If you eat a more sugary bread, adjust the rest of your diet for that day accordingly.

I make my own bread. Flour, yeast, oil, salt, water. Cheap as hell, super clean. You can adjust price based on the ingredients you can afford. My grandmother was Greek, she made bread this way.

Clarification: the Silver Hills bread appears to be non-gmo but not organic. It's made with some organic ingredients so it is better than most of the bread there.
