Nicely done man! That Bogner cab sounded so killer, my favorite tone for sure. The V30 / G12T-75 in an X-pattern is probably my favorite overall setup in general. The speakers complement each other very and result in a huge sound.

Boys, replace the V30 with the VHT Chromeback. It’s a hard speaker to find, but it’s something special. That VHT is basically a V30, but it’s a bit more of a full tone. With the G12t-75, it’s crushing.

You also have to factor in the speaker. Most cabs use V30s. Changing out the speaker will also make a huge difference.

The v30 is a good speakee, but realisticaly, many others are too. It really depends on your own ears and preference. Peavey Sheffields are awesome speakers , geear all around, but it really just depends on your own personal hopes, desires and expectations from the speakers, which are most likely based more on out side opinions than actual performance.

You also have to factor OEM speakers. A Mesa v30 will sound different to a marshall v30
@Durkhead

With ohms the main difference is loudness if you compared 4ohms to 16ohms at the same volume level the 4ohms would be slightly louder so most people think it sounds better because it's louder. But 16ohms is supposed to have less interference so for recording 16ohms should be more detailed, but the difference is so small it's really hard to tell

For me, It's all about where you want the guitar to "sit" in a group setting, what sounds good alone sometimes doesn't sound good with other instruments playing. That being said Peavey cabs have always worked out for me regardless of the cab/ amp combination. Great video, personally I would love to see some other amp/ cab videos like this, maybe with a backing track so we all get a better idea of how it would sound in a mix. 🤘🏾

Speakers matter a lot. The thing that complicates things is - so does your room. And where you place your sensors - also known as ears. Or mic of course. Add psychoacoustics to mix, and humans - and you get... a fun friday evening reading comments!

in my experience the orange ppc 4x12 is a perfect match but its also almost untransportable! i "downgraded" to 2x orange ppc112 and couldn`t be happier with it! all with vintage 30 speakers! the strong midrange helps the 5150 to cut better through a mix, the marshall with gt-75 speakers is the worst since it has almost no mids cheers 🎸🎸
@TaylorDanley
@TaylorDanley 11 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s such a pain to move them without a dolly. They do have a little more shrill IME when close mic’ing them compared to a Mesa cab. Also if you take the Mesa cab off it’s casters, it does seem to have the bass interaction that the orange has, just not nearly as much.
@JohnWiku
@JohnWiku 11 ай бұрын
The orange cab carries the standard production V30 speakers. The mesa cab carries special ordered mesa only V30 speakers. The mesa V30 is less spiky than standard V30. As per Glenn Fricker, the most recent V30 sounds closer to the holy grail standard V30 from early 2000s era.
@Turbo-D
@Turbo-D 11 ай бұрын
@@JohnWiku thats just bogus and a long debunked myth. there are several podcasts with mesa and celestion engineers about that topic. mesa uses 8 ohm v30 speakers, almost all other manufacturers like orange are using 16ohm, that makes a noticable difference in the sound. cheers 🍻

I use my 6505 with a Peavey labeled 4x12 straight cab with the 5150 labeled slant cab on the top rap for the full stack. In comparison to my dual rectifier which I use with the mesa oversized cab, I can say for a fact that the Sheffield speakers those 5150/6505 heads came with really hold their own. You can definitely hear how Eddie was dialed in to the sound of amp he wanted. Point being, I think the OG Peavey cabs with Sheffield speakers are the best combo for the amp. They deliver the low end, clarity in the mids and evenly balanced.

I support and approve the idea of a video series. As a person who has heard a lot of CAB, I will say that the number one for me among all CAB is Vht Fatbottom with P50E speakers. Pay attention to this Cab. I also advise such CAB as: Genz Benz GB 412 G Flex 4x12 or 2x12 Version - low -frequency monster Marshall Mode 4 (Celestion G12 -K100) - an attempt to make a competitor Mesa Oversize Cab, one of the best cab Bogner 4x12 (Vintage 30 and G12T-75) differs from Ubercab by sound Zilla Super Fatboy (G12K100 + V30) - heavy Industrial Sound Hesu Modern M412 (Hesu Demon) Soldano 4x12 (Eminence Legend V12) - dense sound Krank (Texas Heat Speaker) - even denser sound Randall RG100 CAB (Jaguar Res-80 Speaker) - pantera, dense sound Diezel 4x12 (Celestion G12-K100 & V30) Mesa Standard 4x12 (Black Shadow speaker) And on my other channel there are many videos with a demonstration of the sound of cabinet pulses. I plan to make demo versions of more than 200 packages. It can be a hint in the choice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpy3ZWuZjpmmb5Isi=Q3znal1j7DRKAMHh

Thank you for sharing your IR's with us and thank you for making all these comparisons. IF I may though......... I personally wouldn't aim to have the mic placement the same on every speaker (I understand why you did it though) I'd rather try the mic in different positions for that particular speaker because the typical "edge of the dust cap" might not sound as good on something other than a V30 and might make a G12 anniversary sound horrible( for example.... I have no basis in fact on that particular speaker and mic combo) where another mic position might capture its qualities that best.

I had a Marshall-esque 120W tube amp (Koch Powertone) that did really come to live with a 90s 2x12 closed back recto cab. The cab compensated with the muddier tones, scooping / tightening a bit. I once considered exchanging it with a friend for a Bogner 2x12 but the Bogner was just grainy, boomy, unfocused, so I kept the recto cab. I also once paired the amp with a Koch 4x12 with V30s and that was in retrospect maybe a better pairing than the recto, but I sold it nonetheless. Then I got a Peavey RockMaster preamp, killer preamp but tighter by nature and it just became to thin with the recto cab. Paired that with a Marshall 2x12 JVM open back cab and that was a much better combination. TLDR: I do really feel that matching an amp with a cab is a serious avenue to explore for tone chasers.

12:12 It's "kind of" pointless to compare (or at least judge, as in "this cab is worse because it's too (insert bad word) compared to the other cab") cabs with the same mic positions, just because in real life (with real mics or virtual mics that can be moved) we would adjust mic positions anyway to refine the recorded tone. If cab A sounds too thin and fizzy with the SM57 dead center but cab B sounds perfect with the same mic/mic placement/same room/etc, then maybe cab A would sound just perfect if you move the SM57 slightly off axis or something. It was my mistake when doing virtual miking with the Two Notes (Torpedo / Wall Of Sound / CAB...) stuff early on : i would get an awesome sound with a Engl cab and SM57 in a specific position, and then would just switch the cab model to say a Mesa OS (but keep the same mic model/mic position) and suddenly i would dislike the Mesa Cab, when actually it would sound awesome if i had just bothered to tweak the mic position (especially the horizontal axis) just a little. Now i really mess with mic positions before "judging" a cab/mic combination and comparing it to another cab. EDIT : however i understand that for practical reasons it's easier to just leave mics in the same position and then just swap cabs :) EDIT 2 : however #2 : IN THE ROOM (which you cannot really capture or experience with a KZbin Video, but can get close by using room mics or binaural mics placed far away from the cab), it's a different story, since you hear more of the entire cab sound, and not just a capture of the cab by a mic that's placed in a very specific position that has a drastic impact on the tone

Wow, I thought I was going crazy. I have the same Marshall 1960a cab and it sounds extremely quiet when I'm jamming with the rest of my band. I have my Peavey Triple X cranked well over half way just to keep up. Both are older and bought used so some volume loss is expected, but I wonder what it would sound like if I plugged my amp into a newer Mesa or Bogner cab...

I just watched a band I'm very familiar with play 1 amp into a mesa cab and a 1960 cab. The 1960 was quieter and overall just thin/lame sounding in comparison.

I've never tried a Mesa Boogie Oversized. Only the traditional.

I have had both and much prefer the traditional. The oversize I found way too boomy.

For me personally, a Oversized mesa 4x12 cab or a 4x12 orange cab wirh V30s. The orange gives it a lot of resonance and low mids which i love

What about a 2x12? I’ve been wondering about the Invective 2x12 for my 6505+ because I A) just want something that takes less room and B) I’m not in a band atm but like playing through that head at home. Really want an effective alternative to a giant 4x12.

I've heard Sheffield's sound good and I've heard them sound like crap....so it's up to the room ,mic,and EQ settings ... more partial to the oversized closed back with v30's, or open back with fane 75s . Hell the old Peavey pa12's sound awesome with sludgy tones too..
