As a former engineering drafter, I highly recommend a metal erasing shield to get small areas erased cleanly and precisely. I use either white vinyl eraser, which used to be available in a stick with a peel-off cover of paper that exposed a new surface, but now, sadly, I can't find them. I believe the were from Kol-i-noor, which also makes a rectangular one. They are very convenient and the paper wrapping keeps my hands clean. I also was quite adept at using an electric eraser with white vinyl or a sticky yellow plastic eraser that removes ink and pencil from mylar or vellum surfaces. The yellow one left crumbs all over the floor. The office cleaners must have hated them. Also, different brands of pencils can affect how hard or easy they are to erase.

Thanks for this! It’s a simple thing but very useful to see these comparisons because no matter what your level, we all want the best results for our efforts and also not to waste our time, energy and money on essential tools that we aren’t going to like. I also appreciated hearing your comments about what you have found helpful for charcoal vs pencil erasing.

Highly recommend blue-tac that’s all I use for a putty eraser excellent value for money and better than the artist ranges
@greekveteran27152 ай бұрын
LYRA kneadable eraser is WAY better than Blue-tac or any other kneadable eraser out there. Blu-tac is made for sticking posts on the wall, not to be used as an kneaded eraser. LYRA is harder than others, holds it's shape for detailed work better even compared to Faber Castell kneadable erasers. That's what I recomend for artists.

i like Faber-Castell's Dust free erasers. they do a good job erasing and the crums clump together and are easy to remove from paper

I purchased a twin pack of a putty eraser and a gum eraser by the Staedtler brand. No research done before my selection. I’ve mostly used the putty one. It’s been ok. I just gave it a another wash in warm soapy water. I haven’t bothered to cut it to smaller sizes. Since watching this video. I’ve started testing the gum eraser. Seems to do a good job so far.

I’ve been looking for a good eraser for a long time. Nothing’s worse than erasing a small error only for it to grow into a huge mess. Thx as always Michele for another useful video. 🥰💕🐶💕🥰

Fascinating, Michele. I love the Tombow mono eraser and also use an electric eraser that has two different sizes - both are very precise. As for the soft kneadable (putty) eraser I use this all the time. It leaves no residue to brush away, and you can dab at the work without rubbing, and it will pick up loads of stuff. I like that you can mould it into a point or a blade shape for this. As for it looking dirty, that doesn't worry me. It seems to go on and on without any problems, and it doesn't make my hands dirty. I have washed it a couple of times - flattening it out into a thin sheet and washing it with washing up liquid and water, and kneading it, and repeating. This gets quite a bit of dirt out of it. I've just done a black pastel pencil drawing and will probably need to do this just to be sure, as the eraser is pretty dirty now. I don't like its stickiness in my hand especially in hot weather and try to remember to put it down when I'm not using it, instead of holding it ready for use! I also have a plastic eraser which I use occasionally. I have a Pentel mechanical pencil with .5 mm HB leads and a small refillable eraser in the back end, and this is great, too, for precision work. I use my erasers not just for correcting mistakes but also as a "negative" drawing too. They are great.

My favorite, especially on watercolor paper, is the Faber Castell Dust-Free Eraser, I love it so much! I also like the Faber Castell perfection eraser for fine detail erasing. It's a pencil that can be sharpened with an eraser core instead of graphite, and it has a brush on the other end.

For pencil sketches and drawings, I'm always grabbing my eraser shield along with my big rectangular white eraser. (You know, one of those thin little metal cards with the various sizes and shapes of cutouts.) I find the shield essential for precision removal of lines while preserving any adjacent marks.

The Tombow mono is brilliant for precise highlights, I've also got a Derwent precison electric eraser. Both work great with charcoal and graphite, I just clean them off on whatever I'm wearing 😊 I've a black Derwent eraser which is brilliant for larger areas without much mess, but it has wandered off somewhere.

Michele, darling, I think the medium putty eraser is the best, and the Tombow eraser is great for detailing. I agree with you that the soft putty eraser is the worst. The plastic eraser was not very good for extremely soft pencils, but good for hard pencils.

I tend to use the Winsor & Newton 'Griffin' erasers for precision, as well as the plastic you feature in this presentation for a broader clean up. As far as using the word, "rubber", you'd have to be five years old to conflate (& misconstrue) the meaning....

Hi Michele, I also found the grey putty eraser to be a bit grotty. It's interesting that the helix eraser would be handy, but my absolute fave is the W/N, and I do as you do, cut a square off. I also use the Tombow, I find it great for erasing small discrepancies or creating highlights in sketching. Thank you once again. By the way, I noticed you had a chance to wear your sundress.😊

Winsor/Derwent med/firm is pricey in the US. Faber Castel or General kneaded are about tied and cheap here. Factis BM2 is like Tombow but costs a little less. Pentel Hi Polymer works on the large areas as long as the drawing line are not too dark and heavy. Curate makes a battery powered one I haven't opened yet for $5 bucks. I doubt my budget for the Derwent will erase 15-20 dollars from my wallet anytime soon. Great info and video on the brands I haven't heard about. (Update) Found one.

This is a great topic, thank you for your review! I'm in the U.S. and love my Pentel Retractable Clic Eraser. I've never cared for the kneaded eraser style, as you mention trimming off the parts that have absorbed what you have erased. The trade off does seem to be the little eraser bits as you go, minimal with the Pentel, or the eraser type absorbing the removed substance. I'm guessing the Pentel is similar to the last one you tested, just a bit thicker at pencil/pen circumference.

I use a variety of erasers for different jobs when doing pencil drawings. I find the Tombow eraser"pens" both round and rectangular Useful for fine erasing and sometimes even adding a light detail. A friend who is involved with car design told me he uses a battery powered eraser, something I had heard of but thought would be a pointless novelty. I got a cheap chines one and find it brilliant for doing a thorough job of erasing without damaging the paper. I use nearly as many erasers as pencils. critics say I should use my erasers more than pencils.

One of my most favorite erasers is Deli 4B Scribe Infinite Black Eraser - at least from my experience it erases well even darker & deeper - set pencil marks, But I also use a Faber Castell or Koh-i-noor kneeded one/s & I try to keep them mostly in the packaging - & just erase with the sides that poke out.

I think there were some more dirty words in there. But only if one lets them. Thank you for the comparison! I use a kneaded eraser from Faber-Castell and a harder white one from Staedtler (it comes in a blue plastic sleeve) that must be around 35 years old, but still works just fine. Am very happy with both. I do like your firmer white putty eraser!

Great info! I have a couple "Tombow" mono erasers. I love the "mono zero" for creating highlights if I need them (great for cat whiskers!). The "mono knock" is larger than the mono zero (still slightly smaller than the eraser you would find on the end of a regular pencil). It's convenient for when my fingers/hands don't want to cooperate with getting the edge of a used rectangular piece of eraser in the desired location on my drawing ;)

I wash my putty eraser from time to time, seems to keep it clean. I can't remember what brand it is though 🙈, had it a few years now. I use that on my watercolour paper. I have a Derwent pencil eraser, which is good for erasing fine lines as it can be sharpened to a fine point, and it has a soft brush on the opposite end for brushing off the 'bits'. And I have an ordinary, bog standard eraser for erasing larger areas on other papers. If I ever have trouble buying a new Derwent pencil eraser, I will give the Tombow one a try. Thanks for sharing your findings.

Michelle, this is off-topic but I’ve watched a lot of your videos and have found them very interesting. The big however for me is that I work on canvas. That cushy watercolor paper is not an option for me. So, sketching, layering, blending and picking up color is so different. If you have interest in a new area I would love to see any guidance you could offer for watercolor painting on canvas.

Good video Michele!.... I like how you said you "borrowed the book"... after 10 years it is no longer considered "borrowed"... LOL. Michelle, you should continue to call them rubbers. I grew up with that word rubber in school and in college. Words have multiple meanings and it is time for people to use their brains and understand the context in which the word is used and when you are saying rubber in an art video, I know that you are referring to a rubber that erases pencil marks. I agree with you, we should cut the putty rubber and use as much as we need. I like the Faber Castel putty rubber and the Pentel Hi Polymer rubber.

Ah, the Tombow.. pretty cool, no? We may be at odds somewhat on the putty eraser though. Yes, they can get icky and need to be tossed, but if you roll it into a ball or cylinder of whatever size you need you can roll it over an area to remove layers and enhance shading. I often use them when don't want to erase to white, but to just lighten an area a bit. Derwent has a rechargable electric eraser with a tip the size of that Tombow. You will really like the fine lines and control you have with it, I suspect. :D
