I am a brand new Mac user so naturally I tried FCP and fell in love with it. I still have a lot to learn but I am taking youtube seriously now (which is why I purchased a mac in the first place) so it probably won't take long for me to get very familiar with how FCP functions. But I did download Resolve since it's free and I will try that out too. I have no interest in Premier.

Great edit. I wish any, all of these NLE would just auto cut the timeline based on the sound levels. I have to use crappy plugins like timebolt to cut up my multicam footage in premier (because it doesn't work in Davinci even though they advertise that it does), and then, I have to finish up the edit in DR. Crappy. But it lets me get quite a bit of editing done.

Thanks for this video! I have been an editor on(sometimes full time) and off for over 30 years. Just added Davinci to my workflow from doing only exclusively FCP since version 2. I admit I am starting to do a mix of both. FCP for slide show type things due to the plugins I have but then Davinci for other things. Part of what drew me to Davinci is the speed editor which is similar to the control boards I used with the Amiga video toaster and linear systems. Davinici definitely has a learning curve but a lot of power!

Glad you liked the video :) Yeah FCP definitely still has the edge for certain types of edits and workflows. But they're so terrible at updating the app that I can't see how FCP is going to improve the issues that many users currently have with it. I haven't used the speed editor yet, but I'd be curious to give it a try 🙌 Do you like it so far?

I'm a bit old school and started with a jog wheel and switcher board which is why I like it. I did used to have a jog wheel for Final Cut Pro also. The speed editor does speed up my work flow. I dont have the memory for all the keyboard shortcuts although I do have the keyboard skins@@HeyAdamGrasso

first time viewer but i've got to say this is a great video! not sure if you've done it since this, but i think a category that should be mentioned is 3rd party support (plug-ins, effects, etc) as much as i want to take on the challenge of switching over to davinci resolve, i absolutely LOVE the amount/variety of assets there are for FCP
@HeyAdamGrasso

Thanks Drew. Yeah that’s a great future video idea. I did like the plugins for FCP when I was using it, but most of the good ones, (motionvfx) were paid and expensive. Davinci has a bunch of plugins from creators like ‘mralextech’ ‘Patrick Sterling’ that are amazing and super cheap. And there’s only going to be more and more as the user base gets bigger for Davinci.

Hey :) glad you found it helpful. I’m pretty sure it was but I’ll have to check my project file. I make that video at a time when my previous editor was wrapping up working with me, and he was using FCP. So it could have been one of the last videos on my channel that was edited in FCP. The last 8ish on my channel were all edited in Davinci and me and my editor are loving the workflow 😍

Please no magnetic timeline in Resolve. NO thanks. FYI, Fusion is actually older than both Nuke and AE and has been used in thousands of movies for compositing but honestly nodes aren't just exclusive to Fusion or even Nuke. Pretty much all pro VFX softwares use nodes, it's just Adobe stuffs are layer based since they are targeted towards mostly prosumers. But trust me bro, once you go nodes, there's no coming back. I even do my photo editing in Fusion because it makes sense and nothing is hidden inside precomps or anything and I can make any changes at anytime and I can decide the order of operations instead of the software deciding for me. Great video.
@HeyAdamGrasso
@HeyAdamGrasso 9 ай бұрын
I think if Resolve adds some magnetic features but not entirely the same workflow as in FCP, I’d be happy with that :) also if they just give users the option to toggle it on or off, I don’t see the harm in that. I’m down for them to implement anything as long as we have the option to revert it back to normal. Interesting what you said about Fusion. I didn’t realise how old it was. I’m still getting my head around Fusion but it’s definitely way less intimidating to me than it was when I first started using Resolve for all my video edits.
@xanzuls
@xanzuls 9 ай бұрын
@@HeyAdamGrasso Well it wouldn't be that simple honestly and it could change how fundamentally Resolve works but technically you can already do some "magnetic" type workflows in Resolve, like you can set Q to ripple star to play head and W for ripple end to playhead and you work "magnetically" that way, you can also, use ctrl+shift+, for swapping clips hold down ctrl + shift and drag the clips to rearrge it and there are honestly a lot of shortcuts in Resolve to replicate workflows from FCP and premiere. And for Fusion, there aren't many tutorials on YT, most advanced stuffs are over a decade old, I recommend Pirates of confusion, Milolab tuts, and Prophetless and also the creator of Fusion eyeon still has all of the videos they made decades ago. Fusion was fully GPU accelarated and running production level comps in Realtime back in 2012, AE still doesn't have program wide multithreading in 2023, I don't get why do people take this program seriously. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

DR is pretty darn old. Fairlight goes back to the 70s, Fusion to 1987 and Da Vinci to 1984, although in the beginning it was a $1 million server rack. The first years, it wasn't even sold, but only rented or used internally, in the company.

@akyhne
@akyhne 2 ай бұрын
I don't think many outside the film industry uses Avid. I've never even seen a tutorial on Avid on KZbin, although I've never actively searched for it. I don't think they even care that much, as it's the goto tool in the professional market. Avid, FCP and I think Sony's editor are the defaults.
@julesc8054
@julesc8054 2 ай бұрын
@@akyhne Most production companies in my country were Avid only until Final cut first came out and the smaller companies switched. Premier was still AB roll domestic editor no one dared edit a professional product with. YT was still not really a thing yet as internet was too slow, Resolve was colour only. Avid Meridian was the only choice unless you used Edit Box if your production house had big budget gear. Avid Media composer software only is cheaper than Premier. I don't advise using either as Resolve exists.

For editing speed on simple projects I could agree with you. But for more complex stuff, I think Davinci is better. Also for media management, davinici is till much better IMO. Using keywords to organise files feels way more complex than davinci's folder structure.

Boom, never went back to premiere ever again :) Now I see that capcut is the new final cut pro with tons of cool features and ease of use, but I guess i will have to learn davinci resolve for more advanced workflows if I wanna step forward in my career.. What do u think? Btw. Great video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hey Faith. I'd recommend you learn Resolve, cause there's gonna be a lot of techniques you can do in there that will be hard to achieve in Capcut. But Capcut is still really good for smaller/simpler edits. At the end of the day, there's no harm in learning the basics of all the main editing apps, it'll only mean you're a more versatile filmmaker 😊
