So-it's 2022 and manufacturers with modern design and assembly methods are having problems with opening features-yet Matchbox in the 1960s were producing cars that had opening doors and hoods that as a rule fit quite well. I can remember the opening hood on the Opel Diplomat still looked good after a lot of floor racing.
@StingerDiecast2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Matchbox did better opening parts in the past but ironically they are very inconsistent with opening parts now and some of the newer releases are some of the worst. Auto World is actually one of the better brands for opening parts although companies overall have better luck with opening hoods than they do opening doors.
@v8cool231 Жыл бұрын
The difference is, Matchbox has opening hoods and doors etc for playing purposes. These seem to be more display models, and even though Matchbox did have opening hoods etc, the door shuts/Shut lines etc were a a bit clunky. They didn't make good display models, and even sometimes the tailgates on the station wagons were plastic and didn't even match in colour shades due to not being painted.

3 criticisms I have for Auto World: 1) I wish they had inserted plastic headlights 2) I don't like that side mirrors are lacking on some of the models 3) I wish they modeled more vintage stuff (from the 50's and back) But other than that I think they're a pretty solid brand based on the few that I bought. Of course I'm a new collector so I don't really have anything else to compare them to. I just wanted something that has more attention to detail and accuracy than you'd get with your typical generic Hot Wheels of Matchbox cars. I also want to check out Greenlight and Johnny Lightning, both of which look like may have some of the more vintage models I'm looking for. I'm particularly interested in accurate to scale, well detailed 1/64 scale American pickup trucks from 1935-1960.
@StingerDiecast2 жыл бұрын
You should look at M2 and Racing Champions in addition to Greenlight and Johnny Lightning for cars from before 1960. Unfortunately only Greenlight and Autoworld will generally be true 1/64 scale.

AW isn’t widely available in my market (die cast shops only), so I only have two Jeeps. Beautiful castings. Lots of detail, my only complaints are the opening hood gap is very noticeable and the oversized tires on the black JLU prevents it from rolling. But overall, very good quality for a very fair price. And, the windows are usually clear and free from glue and grease!

I love Auto World, but we need more American muscle and more '60s and '70s. However, I can see why they come out with a nice variety, and I definitely love what they've done so far. The only two cars I want to get are the 1973 Mustang and '78 Lincoln Continental Mark V. That'll be a great '70s Ford/Lincoln pair. Here's my next number one car at the top of my list in 1/64 is a '74 Firebird. The 1975 and '76 Firebirds are beautifully designed and are sharp as a razor. Like AW did with their gorgeous '74-'76 Buick Estate Wagons, how about a '74 Firebird. Same body shell, just different rear window utilized the 1970-1973 rear window with no wraparound. Plus, there's the teaking of the grille. '74 was the first year of the slant-nose face-lift, but no parking lights in the grille openings like in '75. Last, the '74 grille consisted of thin vertical grille bars. I thought it looked very sharp 48 years ago when they were new. Besides, I've never seen a '74 Firebird ever done before in 1/64. Come on AW, you can do it, please? A '74 Firebird
@StingerDiecast2 жыл бұрын
I get the impression you're quite a fan of the 74 firebird. :-) Does seem like something that would be in Auto Worlds wheelhouse although Johnny Lightning has been putting out firebirds lately so maybe they could do the casting and then they could share it since all new Johnny Lightnings are supposed to be true 1:64 scale.

I discovered M2 in 2010 at Marshall’s ...the discount Department Store...of all places...there were 3 models from the Barn Finds series that I think they abandoned but everybody from Johnny Lightning to Greenlight have their versions of what they call Projects In Progress or Used Cars...I bought the 58 Plymouth Fury but there was a 67 or 68 Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger Daytona or Plymouth Superbird that I regret buying...the realistic detail was the focus...not a radical paint job with flames or logo, a cartoonish rat fink stance, and a big engine with a blower like more commercial brands would do to most of their castings...adult collectors were in mind when M2 was started...guys who no longer put everything on orange tracks...with the stand and plastic case...on most models...you could put a couple in your den on a coffee table, TV stand, or a desktop at home...even at work but to stay competitive during the past 5 years...they have strayed from just doing showroom cars or daily drivers...you see Gassers and slammed square body trucks...I stopped buying the brand for a while due to Quality Control issues...then got hooked again with the Auto Zone Exclusives sets with the lifts and a killer Chevy Camaro IROC Z!

Auto World buries the needle on Greenlight, Johnny Lightning, and especially M2. M2 is the worst for quality and assembly, and detail as well. Matchbox has made strides to rise back up after years of languishing. Hot Wheels is passable, but crude in detail and more for kids than for adult collectors. Johnny Lightning is good in detail, but quality is a bit fragile, and falls off somewhat (my '56 Chevy lost Its' front bumper, and the rear one broke when the car jumped into reverse, and hit the ravine (the floor). The bumpers were made of cheap resin. Auto World makes theirs out of zinc alloy. And you can barely touch an M2 without something breaking off almost immediately like old 78 rpm records, not to mention equally cheap fit and finish on some models. I buy what models are available, but what made a believer of me with AW is both quality and accuracy. Proof being what I can prove is the quality, and precision of a '66 Mercury Cyclone GT that I just bought two weeks ago for my car showroom diorama. All the exterior details are executed well, particularly the paint. It's my star offering in the car lot. What's YOUR favorite diecast brand?
