I think it's mostly the opposite - with people calling the USSR "Russia" and using Russian in the same sense as Soviet. Which was actually considered controversial in the USSR itself and to this day history teachers in Russia usually correct their students when they use those terms interchangibly.

There was historical accuracy issues. It just looks great in comparison to some of the trans we are adjusted to. Also they were planning on time jump to Jesus’s time for the third season (like the video mentioned) which would have been a huge time jump. The second season already jumped too much but they would have needed to abandon any accuracy or change all actors and most of the characters too if they planned some grounding on reality. Personally if they had had three season I wish they had started with the civil war of Marius and Sulla for first season, and introduced Pompeius, Crassus and Caesar during it (and some others probably not room for all important people). And end with Spartacus. And actually have more of the politics in between than straight to next civil war.

I have recently rewatched HBO Rome. My first time was like 10 years ago. Despite some innacuracies I'm happy they added the Jewish plotline with Herod, it's a nice addition to the show. It demonstrated how vast, complex and culturaly diverse the roman empire was

The reason for Cicero's comments regarding the Jews sending gold to Jerusalem every year was most likely to pay their tithes in leu of the crops and animals required by the Mosaic law. This would have caused resentment in Rome and other cities as offerings paid to the local gods were used to build and improve local temples, which in turn would have been thought to enhance the city. Whereas they would have regarded the Jews sending large amounts of gold to a foreign city as financially weakening their own city.

My understanding was that this show was supposed to run for about 4 or 5 seasons, and that the show runners were only told halfway through season 2 that the show wasn't getting renewed for a third season. That's why you can see some set up with Herod in the second season, they were going to introduce the idea of a Messiah appearing in the fourth season. This is also why you can tell that the final season was rushed.

In the modern day, immigrant communities sending money to their homeland is a point of some contention; while Rome didn’t have the same circumstances, since Judea was part of the greater Roman Empire, Cicero doesn’t seem to be passing any moral judgement on the practise. Do we know if that (lack of) opinion was widespread? The expulsion also seems to have been for violating the Pax Deuorum, at least on paper. Was that the Roman’s primary concern with Jewish communities, if they had any at all?

Can't comment on that particular issue regatding Cicero, but his opinion of Jews was quite low. Varro, on the other hand, was more positive: he thought that lack of images in the Jewish faith was similar to how the Roman religion used to be, so it was more "mos maiorum" than having the statues of gods. There isn't much written about the expulsion of 137 apart from what I presented. Even this was hard to find, because most online texts of Valetius Maximus have this section removed. One English translation says "those people" instead of "Jews" at which I chuckled heartily.

@Zoomer Stasi Honestly Roman banking would make for an interesting video in itself! In Medieval times the laws in Europe against usury meant very few Christians were willing to lend a ruler money since they couldn’t charge interest - Jews had no such restriction, since the Pope’s edicts didn’t apply to them, and so richer Jewish merchants and similar would often be the ones who leant money. It wasn’t until the holy orders had the idea of holding people’s money for ‘safety’ while they travelled the holy land (and taking a donation and/or payment for these services which *totally* wasn’t interest, they promise) and expanded it to elsewhere that you see something resembling modern banking form. I wonder if there were similar religious laws that Jews were uniquely positioned to avoid in the Roman Republic that made them a natural fit for the role of being money lenders? How did Roman banks even work, if there were such things?

Absolutely - this series of historical novels gives so much context to life in Rome, the workings of government, military and society at large; plus the family that produced Julius Caesar. One of my favorite series of books, hands down. It could provide enough material for a decade-long series, with all the characters, plots, side plots and time frame.

So the Jewish men went to various parts of Europe (and other places) and married local women. The DNA studies confirm that Ashkenazim do have Hebrew DNA however it is from the paternal line. Uncomfortably, this would make Ashkenazim non-Jewish by Jewish law as that must come from the mother. Herod was never accepted by the Jews because, although his father was Jewish, his mother was not. But again, please correct if I've erred.

Herod switched his allegiance to Augustus near the end of the civil war between Antony on Octavian. Herod hated Cleopatra, and until he rebelled, Marc Antony had placed all of Herod's territories under her control from Alexandria. She, likewise despised and had no respect for him. History would have been vastly different had Antony won that conflict. Cleo and Antony were already awarding their children territory when they were very, very young, which included all of the Levant. So, for his loyalty and help with taking down Antony in Alexandria, Herod was given all the territory of Galilee and Judea to rule as a client kingdom, which, as you said, only changed for Judea after Herod's son mismanaged the area and it become a Roman province.

The Hasmoneans, even the most pious of them were pretty much Hellenized, as you could tell by their names alone. Not to mention that their interactions with Rome initially were in Greek. The enormous hatred of the Jewish people for Roman sovereignty was brilliantly represented in the Anthony Burgess's novel "The Kingdom of the Wicked". One of the protagonists, Caleb, is a young zealot who is condemned to the cross for an absurd crime a few days after the death of Jesus. Freed during the procession by his compatriots, Caleb goes about organizing small revolts against the Romans for all Judea until he knows that his two sisters have been sold to Rome as slaves. Determined to rescue them, Caleb travels to the eternal city as a gladiator, only to discover upon his arrival that one of them was whipped to death by Caligula and the other married the centurion who bought her freedom. Knowing that he cannot return to his land, Caleb decides to stay in Rome, and although he swears he would never forget his hatred for the roman civilization, he ends up getting used to the their lifestyle and even starts a family. Unfortunately, this pacific era of well-being suddenly ends when Caleb loses his infant son during the Great Fire caused by Nero, thus reviving his inordinate hatred for Rome. Caleb then abandons his family and returns to Judea when the great Jewish revolt breaks out, joining the rebellious Zealots at the fortress of Masada. Finally, when the imprisoned Jews begin committing mass suicide to avoid being slaved, Caleb (now an insufferably decrepit old man) tells his compatriots to die while killing as many Romans as possible instead of simply taking their own lives. Completely fed up with him, one of the Jews slits the old man's throat. Watching his life fade away before his eyes, Caleb then realizes how much he wasted his life and that he will spend all eternity in hell for being dominated by his hatred.

It's becuase they were building up for potentially 5 seasons, culminating around Christ. Because the show was so expensive and its R18 rating made it difficult to sell globally, they cancelled it. Very sad. As season 2 was supposed to be 2 different seasons, first half the war of the "liberators". Season 3, conflict between Antony and Octavian. Zealots broke off from the Sadducees, not the Pharisees, but agreed with Pharisaic notions. Josephus, BTW, came from a Sadducee family with Hasmonean connections but also grew to accept most of the Pharisaic notions although he didn't consider them sufficient, so he was probably a Zealot himself originally. This may explain his vehemence against the Zealots in his writing; he's overcompensating for a dark past. The confusion about the origin of Zealots came from the lack of information on Judas of Gamala, their original founder, but during the First Jewish War itself it became clear that most of the Zealot leaders were former Sadducees. The Sicarii in particular were part of the splinter group of ex-Sadducee Zealots that were fighting over the Temple Mound against the Sadducees proper during the siege of Jerusalem. The idea that Sadducees were the pro-Roman collaborator faction is rabbinic propaganda. Both factions were equally anti-Roman, but the Sadducees were just better political operators who understood realpolitik. If you ask Israeli secular historians their consensus opinion is that the Sadducees were the ultraconservative nationalists who rejected Hellenization of their religion while the Pharisees were the liberal accommodationists who were Hellenizing their religion. The confusion comes from the two factions' civil attitude. The Sadducees rejected all foreign philosophical and political ideas not found in their Bible - they were the original Sola Scriptura adherents - but accepted Greek lifestyles. The Pharisees were instead busy borrowing ideas from Persian and Greek influences (angels, the afterlife, the immortal soul/pneuma, the infallibility of God as master of space and time, etc) and adding books to the Bible but completely rejected the lifestyle of the Greeks. So externally it looked like the Pharisees were the patriots, but we need only to look at America's pro-Russian "patriots" riding their Stars-and-Stripes-bedecked SUVs while spreading Putin's propaganda to see why people shouldn't be judged from external looks alone. The Sadducees had fought politically and diplomatically to rid Jerusalem of foreign rule and had largely succeeded in obtaining autonomy for the core of Judaea from the Romans. They had to accede to Roman protectorate status and allow some oversight. However, if we look at both Josephus and what the gospels say about the way the Romans kept control of Jerusalem, basically the Roman governors were living off on the coast in Caesarea Philippi and only coming into Jerusalem for about a month every year to watch the festivals. 11/12 of the time, Jerusalem was a self-governing autonomous republic ruled by the Sanhedrin. This shows that the Sadducees were nationalists at heart but pragmatic, which is why they were successful. They were willing to make concessions to remain semi-independent. They were of course also corrupt as heck and didn't care much about the common folk, but politically they had managed to maintain Judaean autonomy under Roman rule and that's really all they cared about. In this context it's easy to understand what the Zealots were originally: Sadducees who were just as nationalistic as the rest but refused any form of accommodation whatsoever. They also cared more about the common folk than their elitist brethren, thus the agreement with the Pharisees.

I've always found the Pharisees kinda interesting since most people only know about them from the bible and have an extremely negative view of them. In reality they were roman collaborators who are most known for their depiction in a document written by people who opposed Roman rule and wanted independence. I think the funny thing is that they were kinda vindicated since after the jews revolted Rome took a harder stance on them. For those who don't know, in 70 AD the Jews finally revolted against Rome and lost, resulting in the sacking of Jerusalem, the loss of the ark of the covenant and the second temple, the kingdom of Judea was no longer recognized and was instead incorporated into the provenience of Syria, Roman rules became stricter and harsher on the Jews, and were it not for skill full diplomacy and pleading by several personalities would of resulted in their religion being banned. The Israeli/Palestine issue is only an issue because the Jews resettled in the region. The Romans executed ALL OF THEM in the final Tenple Revolt. Every man, woman and child was mercilessly slaughtered. None escaped. None survived. The region was then given back to the Cannanites. The Ark (according to biblical reference) was taken up into heaven at some point. God seemed to have His own reason for this.
