What’s the difference between a GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado

I own both and there is a big difference in many areas and many similarities also. My GMC has way more options than my silveraldo. It also rides totally different, my GMC is a lot smoother on the road. I like my slightly older GMC more as it more comfortable to drive. It also has an 8 foot bed over the chevys 6.5 foot which might help its ride. Nicer wheel package and no active fuel management where the chevy has AFM. They both have a 5.3 v8 but the sierra is more responsive.

Ok I work for GM and the real Difference is the ride and let me explain. Go to your build sheet that should be located in your glove box look for Z71 or Z88 and this is going to be your total package. There are basically 2 types of Z71 package and 1 being true off road and the other being the appearance package with 4 wheel drive. So going back to your build sheet if see Z88 you have a softer suspension with 20 inch wheels and Z71 appearance package with 4wheel drive. GMC prefers to use this for the ride and still have the off road abilities. Now GMC gives you more luxurious equipment like Bose sat radio with touch navigation and 6 position leather seats that are heated cooled. Where as Chevy your getting a great truck but Chevrolet doesn’t use that package. So yes GMC is like having your cake and eating it to type truck with a better ride. All I own is GMC

Umm chevy ltz and high county have the Bose speaker system…as well as the heated/cooled seats. And also the heated mirrors and steering wheel. You must have looked at an LS trim I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado LT Z71 and it has heated seats up front.

GMC Sierra's and Chevy Silverado's are pretty much the same truck. In the past GMC marketed mainly to commercial buyers, and Chevy's were predominantly sold to private buyers. Nowadays GMC's are marketed as a slightly higher end pickup truck. Even though you can pretty much option out the trucks the same way. However it gives GM an excuse to sell you the same truck for a little more.

I have a 2012 Silverado 1500 5.8 ltz crew cab with all the features its amazing no complaints I upgraded from a 96 Chevy (my first vehicle ever purchased and it still runs like a clock with 250k original miles) I also own a 2018 Toyota Tacoma sr5 pro and its interior features are nothing compared too the Chevy ltz but it saves gas . So I basically own a 2012 GMC slt as well 😁

60s/70s/80s GMC used to translate into a heavier duty truck (heavier suspension/payload than a Chevrolet. Now GMCs are a touch more luxurious and upscale than Chevolets.

Mark W Same truck. GMC did offer a big V6 engine until the early 70’s but still same truck otherwise. In the 50’s the GMC 6 has brass rod bearings whereas the Chevy has Babbitt. The GMC’s could take more RPM. Through the 60’s and starting in the 70’s thru became the same truck other than few options.

Thanks, I learned something, those standard options you noted. The biggest difference I've found is the way GM allows various options to be ordered. I've owned a few. I once asked a GMC engineer at the NAIAS, ' WHAT'S THE DIFF?' He said in the upper models, there's more sound deadning, thicker glass, and some engineering first. I don't know. Remember the quad headlights?

When there was the big depression in the mid-2010s and GM shut down Pontiac I was surprised that they did not merge the GMC and Silverado lines since nearly all the components are the same. There are no retail advantages of the two separate badgings since GM dealers now sell all the GM lines (like Jeff says, he sells both lines).

When I worked as a mechanic I found the biggest difference in the two were the frame and suspension. In the GMC the frame was thicker and heavier and the suspension was beefier. I believe this was due to the GMCs being more of a commercial vehicle back then.

Sierras have always been nicer and more luxurious. But from '16-'18 the Silverado is just sexier. I ended up going with a Silverado for that reason, plus 10k more for a few plastic trims isn't worth it. I still jock them tho. Definitely been the two sexiest trucks on the market imo.

They definitely are not 10k difference lol. I have always preferred the look of GMC more, but its exact same thing as Silverado. I have a 2018 Sierra sle z71 and my dad has a 2018 Silverado z71 we both paid about the same for our trucks, only difference is mine has metal z71 badges by the hood and aluminum around stereo head unit and steering wheel, also plastic around fenders. His Silverado has the plastic carbon fiber instead of aluminum around the stereo. I also have more bed tie downs and bed lighting, he doesn't. It all comes down to which front end do you prefer. To me Chevy has always been the blue collar work truck, the GMC I feel is the same, but with more class.

Does nobody really notice they are not the same trim leves plus the gmc is a extended cab/smaller back door version not a fair comparison you should have put the other black gmc next to the other silverado

You forgot aluminum trim, stitching on the dash and the trim in the sierra just feels higher quality, also the front fender and bed sides are different as are the tail lights

Another small difference is that the console and button lights in the Silverado are blue and the Sierra ones are red.

As a Ford person, I think the GMC wins this one. Not by a big margin, but it's notably better. It wasn't by much until I looked at the interior.

Black unpainted fender flares, and Boxy looking Super Duty style grill are the 2 main differences on the GMC. Silverado looks Sportier.
