my ex actually went through the process of getting a job at my workplace, sitting next to me every single day no matter where i sat (we don’t have cubicles or assigned seats. it’s like a giant open desk space, kind of like a classroom.) anyway, she starts going on and on about her new guy and how good he does her. she had told me for the past 2 years that she wanted to wait till marriage, and it had been only 2 weeks since we broke up, but she said they’d been dating for the past month. after about 3 or 4 weeks of this, he apparently dumps her, and she comes crying to ME every day about how bad she misses me and that she never wanted to leave me. this girl seriously admitted in the span of a month that she 1) was cheating on me near the end of the relationship, 2) gave her virginity to someone else after years of saying she wanted to remain pure, and 3) was willing to hop from guy to guy if it was convenient for her. i gladly said no and she was there for another 6 months before being fired for refusing to do her job for 2 weeks. Forgot I actually have one for this! So when I was a freshman in highschoo still figuring out my sexuality. I was talking to this guy online let's call him Issac. Issac told me he was 17. We talked for maybe a month until one day as I was getting out of school and planning to hang out with my friends for a bit as per usual. Suddenly, I get a text on my phone from Issac asking what kind of backpack I had. I thought it was a weird question but told him I had a red wheeled one and asked why. To which he responded: your school has uniforms so I wanted to know which person to look for. Turns out he'd decided to come to my school. I immediately called 3 of my friends and told them what was going on and asked them to hang out somewhere nearby. Come to find out Issac was actually 20 and had lied so I would get scared off. I make myself hang out with him for as long as feels proper before making my excuses to bail. Thoroughly creeped I deleted my profile on the site (not even social media like myspace which was popular at the time but some obscure site that was basically a chatroom with no discerning info aside from a name that wasn't even my real name) I didn't realize I'd never told him where I went to school until w week later when he called me from a new number and I had to threaten to get the school involved if he showed up again. It was terrifying. To this day, I don't know how he found me since I didn't use my phone in school and this was when a phone with a browser was still a cool new feature and you had to be careful not to use all your data downloading a single picture. I don't remember if the thing even had GPS. But it was definitely a flip phone because I remember snapping it shut after telling him to fuck off.

Threatening to leave a relationship without actually intending to is called brinksmenship and it's a manipulation tactic. The intention is to control the person/have them submit or agree to whatever they want or say (all depending of your fear of them actually walking out). It is screwed up and doesn't only happen in romantic relationships. Like if it's over something major (like if ppl's relationship goals or whatever don't align) and the person is actually gonna go, that's one thing. But, trying to get someone to conform by threatening them with that isn't okay or healthy.

The DeviantArt relationship reminded me of this little jewel: I had a freshman hit on me when I was a senior, we were both in high school. I thought ignoring him would make him go away but he was persistent- leaving notes, trying to get classmates to share him my phone number and just liking things I so happen to like or mutually mention in conversation. It got to a point where I became angry, took him by the shoulders, looked at him dead in the eye and said, “I just turned 18 you’re still 14. Not only is that illegal but I’m graduating in a month and moving away! It’s never going to work.” He tried to cut some corners and work around those things, but I put my foot down. Okay...I used to have a friend who tried the whole Romeo And Juliet Law thing: So, I used to have a friend named Gecko (not his real name) who dated a lot of girls online, most of which obviously never worked out. One day, he started dating this girl for a while and he was really happy about it, until one day he was really upset because he was afraid that he would have to break up with this girl, why? Well, Gecko was 16 about to turn 17 and the girl...she was 13 years old. Here's the crazy thing though, Gecko knew this and justified it by bringing up the concept of Romeo And Juliet laws being okay in some countries...Gecko was upset because he found out that Romeo And Juliet laws most certainly don't apply legally in America and he was afraid and sad about the idea that he, a 16 and/or 17 year old, might have to end an online relationship with a 13 year old. TLDR: My friend was upset because he realized he had to end an online relationship with a minor.

Romeo and Juliet laws do apply in some states of the US, but only under specific circumstances. They are not meant to, nor will they protect someone in your friend's situation. Here's an example of why we have them: Teenaged boy is dating a girl who is 14 months younger than he is. The age of consent is 17 in their state. They've been together for 2 years and for 10 months out of every year, his age is one year older than hers. But when he has his 18th birthday and is legally an adult, she's still 16 and her consent isn't recognized by law. He's now a sex offender. That's not right.

When my mother died (bless her soul) my dad after two or three years of heartbreak found a new lover and wanted to marry her. This led to a court case with a woman I’ve never met that my dad was married to the entire time he was with my mother (broken up every way but legally). One of my worst relationships was dating a woman who introduced me to polyamory, and frequently made use of the fact I had a car to make frequent trips to a town that was an hour and a half away to visit other people in the polycule. Very controlling and gaslighting sort. When I was going on vacation with family in an area that had no network prior to moving into my own place, I told her I wanted some time to myself to avoid stressing out with the move. No replies until I got back into network and she interpreted my message as me breaking up with her. My mother is awful I more ways than she is tolerable, and my best friend (we'd been attached at the hip for 5 years, dating for 6 months) was joining the Army. We got married 6 months before I turned 18 despite the fact he was 19, because it's legal with parental consent in Florida. This enabled me to get out from underneath her thumb while he's gone, so we can start our adult life far away from all of this mess. However, this is almost never the case. I recognize how unique my situation is. But these laws do some good sometimes, I don't know what I would've done if I had to wait for him to come back to get married

Maybe not entirely on subject, but weaponizing emotions backfired so much on my mom when we were kids. Thinking my dad was always to busy to take care of us, she said to us one time (4 kids), if you're so unhappy, go live with your dad. We called him and he just said: pack your bags, I'm coming. She had a huge panic and tried to go to court to keep us, but it was to late. We moved to my dad's place 2 days later and that was it. She didn't know that his only regrets from that divorce was not having us around every day. She gave him the opportunity right there and then. That was 26 years ago and I still regret nothing.

I had one ex who tried the entire 'if you don't take me back i'll self terminate'. She tried that after having gone full stalker for a month and having been stupidly manipulative from the start of our relationship. And sincei knew she wasn't suicidal, while i had been and thus knew the difference between cries of attention/help and guinine self termination desire, so i just called her bluf by telling her with the most deadpan voice i could 'do it, it'll give me the rest and quiet i wanted after breaking up'. She just yelled at me for calling her bluf and hung up all huffy that her unhinged bluff didn't work.

@@pisces2569 i can't say i reccomend the approach i took, but broadly speaking a genuine desire remains silent and simply does. Whereas using it to manipulate (again broadly speaking so i will for a moment include regular cries for help from people struggling mentally and at the end of their rope) will either shout it from the roof,use it as a threat and generally be vocal about it. Mostly people who utilize the 'threat of suicide' as a cry for help mention it mainly to people they trust in a hope to get valuable help towards improving their situation. I only dared make that callout on my ex's bluf since i had been genuinely suicidal in the past with several failed attempts (some i cgickened out, so to say, and others i was intercepted by police called by worried passerbys) so i did personally know the signs of someone with genuine desire, fromwhat i found out afterwards during therapy, a major part of why genuine desire remains silent is to prevent people interfering and to not be that burden to loved ones in their final moments. Especially that latter i recall feeling at the time, didn't even want to leave notes of my intentions to not be more of a burden than i already felt. A threat for pure manipulation is rather easy to recognize though, given that you are aware of the person inquestion having manipulative tendencies etc... that is usually a red flag along the lines of a threat of self termination is just a threat to manipulate others to do their bidding, balically tearing at the heartstrings in the hope of desired effect, which is sickening. Sorry if that got kinda long, i triedto condense it as much as i could while still keeping relevant information i knew clear and understandable. P.S. yes failing several attempts at my own life did not help my mental state during that time and frequent psychiatric help during the aftermath did help a lot, but one of the best tips i got was every afternoon, during a phonecall with my shrink, she just convinced me to postpone it to the next day... so in a weird way i can say that chronic procrastrination did genuinely save my life.

Man i wish i had a photo of his surpised pikachu face with guppy fish swallows. When i look at my girl she looked at me with a evil grinch smile as she slid her id to him. He had to do a double take when she said "whats my my b day and whats to days date?" To make it even more comical the arresting officers never talked to her just her parents. Not to mention we had our 5 closest friends all tell the judge that we knew there parents stunts and had broken up they day before my birth day just to be legal legal and during my bday kept feet away and the closest we got was an air hug. Boy the judge got heated when she asked did anyone check ids before i was arested and tore my girls parents a new one when she found other stuff they tried to break us up. Plus this accusation would destroy my chance with the fire ems and my fire ems contact who asked the guys at the station i hung out at all told him that i didnt need fire ems school for i had the skills befor going in

The Romeo and Juliet thing is enforceable, I actually had first-hand experience when I met somebody on a game and we kind of Hit it off. The mother was very irate and wouldn't shut up about it being wrong or something else, and she actually sent me the legalities of it and in the paperwork she sent me was the Romeo and Juliet law, so I highlighted that part and sent it back to her. So this isn't about any of my exes but an ex friend of mine and his ridiculous list of requirements of dating him. So, The long and short of it. he had this list of requirements. he had to be the taller one. the smart one (he wasn't smart might I add) and you couldn't have guys in your life (family's fine but friends? They gotta go) you couldn't stay up late either because he's going to assume you are talking to guys behind his back. At some point his girlfriends who knew me and talked to me would break up with him for me. (I gave them what they were missing in that relationship. love and care. they were my friends too) it got to a point where this ex friend assumed I was the problem. i was the reason his girlfriends were leaving him because I was stealing them. it couldn't have been his ridiculous and stupid list of requirements and the fact he never showed them love that was the problem no it couldn't've been. Now ontop of everything he added the "you couldn't talk to (name)" to the list because he again thought I was the problem. And onto the smarter thing, To give you guys an example of how pathetic he was/is, He dumped a girl for being smarter then him, She was a bookworm and was always in the library. her level of intelligence threatened his pride so much that he quote "felt dumb for being with her".

I had an on again off again abusive ex. He sabotaged my birth control, because he thought I was too good for him and a baby would force us to stay together. He cheated constantly and I kept taking him back for our daughter, then he started getting physically abusive and it was one thing when he beat me and destroy my stuff but he shoved our daughter and I beat the shit out of him. Turns out he was getting violent because he got his side chick pregnant and that was the final nail in the coffin. I am not dealing with psycho baby mama who got a ton of strangers to harass and stalk me online. They still stalk me years later and owe almost 4 years of child support. F you Dom and Jewel. Hope you guys are still torturing each other; he admits that he wanted his other baby dead for a year after he was born because he thought that would make me want him back. Crazy times.

While standing with her she kept trying to gaslight me into going out with her again and when i refused she tried self harming herself until i grabbed the knife out of her hand. Then she proceeded to try to kill herself by running into the road while cars were coming by. And kept trying to use the “if you dont want me im just gonna kms” card along with more gaslighting. Her family came and got her and last i heard from her friend she was put into a mental hospital.

There was this girl named Rachel (that is her real name) who was extremely outcasted because of how weird she was and because I was also a little weird and a bit too kind I introduced her to my friend group. Little did I know that she was absolutely crazy. She fell in love with me and my best friend, but I know that she was crazier for me for some reason. So one day she has some of her friends chase me down during recess just to hold me down and kiss me. Eventually she tackles me and leans in for a kiss. I, having an extreme adrenaline rush, put both my legs on her stomach and kick her off of me. Rachel went flying. The funniest part was the strictest teacher saw me do it and just said, "good job kid" Another thing she did was push me into the mud. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I used everything I had to my disposal to show people she was insane. I used my friend group, her ex-friends, and my popularity (thanks to my super kind mom working at my school). The unforseen effect was she lost all her friends and became more outcasted than before I was kind to her. Just so people know I am not one to use power for myself. I'm usually just trying to get through school. I don't give a crap about popularity until I need to use it for good reason. The cards very estate next day she says that ill pay in more ways than one. I told my mom and the principal. I last heard she became hot but was still crazy.
