What's frustrating with 80s GM interior is that you can see the designer had pretty cool ideas, but the mass produced execution was made a crappy hard black ABS that squeaked and rattled, and cracked with the vibration, or slight overtightening, and the soft colored plastics that aged terribly with the UV. I absolutely love the looks of my 84 T/A interior, but I don't want to touch anything.

I’m convinced that probably 75% of GM reliability and quality control issues are a direct result of bean counters. They either rush production, resulting in the final steps of R and D being conducted by the buyer, they insist on cutting corners (think the 350 olds diesel or 440t4 trans) or cut cost at the expense of long term reliability.

Two-knob mounts are gone but under the dash skin of some lower level trim modern cars, there are still standard double DIN stereo mounts.

Aftermarket makers pitched a fit over the early Citation radios too. They were a 2 knob style but mounted vertical .

As a pre-teen in those days, I was torn between the starship-like interior of the Berlinetta and the sportier ground effects of the Z-28. Ultimately, the Z won.🤷🏿♂️😹

Great video, I follow cars a lot and as a teenager in the 80’s I never saw the interior of the Berlinetta, thanks for showing us!

My mom and dad bought a new Camaro in ‘84 while my dad was in college. It had the Iron Duke inline 4 cylinder and I believe it was a manual transmission. It was bright red so it at least looked fast. My dad drove it to work until 1996 when he blew the head gasket. He painted it aqua marine blue at one point in the early 90’s and I remember my mom got him a hot pink steering wheel cover😂

Of course I realise you are speaking from a US perspective, but funnily enough there are quite a few english speaking places where any citroen is waaay more mainstream than a Camaro. Such as England, for example. Cool video, had no idea such an interior existed.

I wish on the new LCD panels that are in cars now that they’d redo versions of their old digital cluster counterparts as an option, like the old one from the regal that had two cool hockey stick tach-style gauges for the speedo and tach with cool triangle graphics for the ancillary gauges. It’d be so cool to see that without the background glow you’d get in parts from being vfd and have the correct gm dashboard fonts from the button labels for the speedo and tach readouts instead of generic 8-segment vfd numbers. Could you imagine the crazy 6000ste with that compass and systems monitor readouts if you could redo them in lcd?

You made me think of what might happen in the new Nissan Z if the LCD screen drew inspiration from the 1984 300ZX Turbo.

I remember wanting one of the iroc z Camaro. They were so cool looking and looking back now… it’s interior like straight out of the Stone Age 😂. The last time I drove one was when I had to drive my sisters to the junkyard, seat was so broken from that leaned back position, steering rack was so bad it was like steering a boat at slow speed , doors were so heavy they sagged when you got out. Damn I miss the 80’s😎

I had one of these as a company car in 1984. I enjoyed it, and thought it was cool. The turn signal was easy to get used to, even though a bit unconventional. It was a medium periwinkle blue metallic, a color that was only available with the Berlinetta.
@richardbrown15532 жыл бұрын
The Isuzu Impulse from that era also had pods, and a similar turn signal switch.

The F body design was exciting when it came out. As a surprise, my friend rented a brand new 1980 red on red Camaro to use for a camping trip. I used half a roll of film taking pics of it; it only had 16 miles on the odometer. We saved opening the hood for last and to our surprise, painted right onto the grill drain under the windshield wipers was a wadded up paper towel with some food still inside. Right next to that was plastic bottle which also had been painted and stuck to the grill. Worse, on the passenger side dash board was some kind of goo or glue bleeding out from the bottom of the windshield and the stitching on the seat cushion was undone about 3 inches.

Thank you again Adam. I remember Berlinetta. I thank you for explaining. I thought it was interesting too. You know I think about the 1986-1989 Buick Riviera when I see this interior. That one was changed for 1990. I think about the other 80's GM interiors that attempted to incorporate high interiors and you named one of the from Buick. I know you could get the Firebird/ Trans Am with digital gauges also. I know that Buick used a similar floor shifter too. I was told the tv series Knight Rider influenced a lot of interiors in the 1980's. What is interesting is they are using high tech interiors and screens in cars now in 2022.
@Vivi-tz2rl2 жыл бұрын
I have an '89 Reatta, same cluster and screen as the Riviera but hand assembled. It's held up well over the years all things considered, no real creaks or shakes when driving and nothing has broken. If only GM extended that to their other cars of the time, we'd still have the spaceship Grand Prixs rolling around

You mentioned the Sport Coupe as the entry level 80s GM Cars. The Monte Carlo had that as Entry Trim that other than myself, only heard You Mention. I had an 86 Monte Carlo Sport Coupe But with SS interior minus the SS Badge's & the 5.0 HO Drivetrain that I never saw on another Monte. I Bet my Friend $10 I could keep up with His Same Year SS without telling him what I had under the Hood. Not only was I able to Run along side him, I had the slight edge of less weight due to the SS Body Fender's. SC-LS-SS-AC. The only Year with 4 Trim Levels in this Body Style as the SC was Dropped in 1987. I was told about 20 years ago while at a Car Show held at Southampton Buick, Pontiac,GMC on Long island the Dealership Owner I saw Looking at My Car in Visitor Parking & I walked up to him & he asked to see under the Hood. It was then when He told me my Monte was a Rare Bird & The Original Owner must have Ordered My (I'm 2nd owner) the Base Body but wanted Drivetrain & interior to essentially be a Sleeper. Is my History on my 86 Monte Correct???? Also I been waiting Patiently for Your Channel to do the Era of my Dad's Two-Door 1981 Mercury Marquis Brougham. I remember my Dad only Dislikes about His Merc was the Problematic Electronic Carburetor which I believe was only used for 2 model year's do to customer complaints. Also the Front Fender behind wheel was the Vents which where just for looks & only on 2 year Models. My Dad always wanted a Lincoln, But the Marquis made him very Happy. Finally in 1987 He went to the Local Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Dealership to Finally Purchase the Lincoln Town Car he so wanted for Year's. Wen Dad & Mom Pulled in the Dealership & walked inside a Salesman saw the 2-Tone Blue, Gray Marquis they drove in with Said to Dad I know exactly what Your here for & follow me outside. The Salesman walked over to a vehicle that had been sitting on the Lot for many months & was considered a Left-over as this was in Late 1987 as Most 88s where already on the Lot. So it was a Complete shock, to not only my Mom, Myself & rest of my Family, My Dad drove home in a 1987 Ford F-150 XLT LARIAT 4X4 in same 2-Tone Blue,Gray as the Mercury. Wen my Dad asked Salesman why the Truck had not Sold all those Months, the Salesman said it had every available options & was the Most expensive F150 for that model year ($15.000). My Dad added Dealer options, Bedliner, Step Rail, Hand Rail, Hood Bug Deflector, Under-Carriage Rust Proofing, Tinted Window's, Larger Size Tires & Sport Aluminum Rims, Chrome Front Push Bar. All Said & Done, Driving off the Lot my Dad just spent just under $23.000. essentially Probably the Most expensive F-150-F350 to sell at that Dealership for that Model Year.

When I was a high school co-op student at Buick Motor Division in the mid-80's , I drove one of these funky Camaros with the unique turn signals (once). I kept trying to push the lever right and left, instead of up and down! LOL!

The Audi 100CD (Audi 5000 in the USA) of circa 1983 had a similar 'OK' feature that would flash up in the middle of the gauges on start up (if things were all good). It would change to the relevant symbol if something went wrong - such as a thermometer if the engine got too hot.

The quality of materials and execution of all of this hi-tech wonderfulness was just absolutely abysmal. I remember sitting in one of these at a dealership and just being amused and appalled, all at once, as I was sure I could just snap that radio of its stalk with one hand. This is a very good- looking car, though.

I remember driving a 1983 or 84 Z/28 at a Chevy dealership in Albany Ga and was impressed with it’s handling but my father and I noticed right off how creaky and floppy the huge plastic dash was. I got back in my 1969 SS 396 Camaro and never felt so blessed in my life😅

It *looked* like you could, but I had to disassemble mine, there was a substantial (at least 3/4 inch thick) steel rod that went from the console into the swivel pod. You would crush the radio casing before you got it out of the console.

My parents had a 1985 Oldsmobile Toronado and it had a cool interior but the neatest thing was that the car talked to you. Instead of a chime or dinging like most vehicles it had a bunch of preset things that it would say like.. the park brake is not fully released, the door is ajar, and a bunch of other things that I can’t even remember anymore but we thought it was the coolest thing back in the day as kids!

A friend bought one, brand new, in 1984. He almost immediately regretted it. The pod flopped, wobbled, blink and rattled. The lights on the dash were a mess and the overall fit and finish of these custom elements were a mess. He dumped it after two years. Another fine GM example.

I had a 1990 Silverado. I remember the stero having a bunch of extra features on the digital display. The graphic equalizer was inside of it. I remember the graphic equalizer of mom's 1985 Maxima having manual levers. I consider the interior of old cool cars to be about having more buttons to push and mor displays to show, even though almost nobody ever pushes those buttons or reads those displays.

I owned an '84 for several years, and sure missed it when it was lost in an accident I could not foresee or avoid. I never had trouble with the swivel radio being loose or rattling. I'm sure the elastic band for the sunglass holder in the roof console was much tighter when the car was new, but the elastic fails with time. The windsheild wiper delay is, as Douglas Croxford commented below, infinitely adjustable, and I don't know why they don't use a similar delay set up today. The design for the interior controls of this car were far ahead of their time, and it's a shame they didn't keep some of those features. At least digital dashboards have come back. Edit to add: The speedo actually had room for triple digits, because you could switch it to read in KPH instead, but in mph, it was limited to 85 (136kph), at which point it would simply blink at you.

I had an 85 Berlinetta and it was such a cool car! An iconic piece of 80's history. Bright red, chrome mag wheels, black T-tops. The only thing that was really terrible about it was in the winter water would condense inside the car and burn out the dashboard. I blew out 2 before I realized I had to just unplug the dashboard it in the winter to protect it. They were not easy to find a replacement for either! This was especially problematic since the T-tops leaked as they virtually all did. I could have lived with all that but unfortunately it only had a v6 and when the engine blew I decided it just wasn't worth fixing. At the time I could just buy a v8 F body for less than $1000. I actually went on to buy both a v8 Camaro and a Trans Am for $500 each.
