Claims of cadences over 85 RPM being more efficient or less fatiguing, even amongst highly trained cyclists is NOT SCIENCE BASED. Numerous studies find 70-85RPM to be the peak of efficiency/fatigability, and RPM above 90 have a strongly negative effect on performance in elite cyclists, eg 120RPM has 12% lower efficiency than 80 RPM (doi 10.1007/s00421-004-1226-y) and there is a similar drop off in performance above 85 RPM in amateur cyclists. The main determinant of optimum cadence is mechanical, with cycling position affecting the result slightly. Some elite cyclists may prefer higher RPM, but this is because of lower perceived effort, rather than less fatigue or greater efficiency.
