I don't want to be the "well actually guy", and rarely bother correcting people on the internet. However, as a resident, I have to point out that Ny-Ålesund is exclusively for research, and access is heavily restricted even for us living in Svalbard. We can however submit an application to visit. The trip over from Longyearbyen is demanding by snowmobile, or extremely expensive by research ship (even by norwegian standards). I can't speak for the russian settlements, but as far I know, Longyearbyen is then the northernmost PUBLIC town you can move to :D That being said, if you ever find yourself in Svalbard and in need of consumer electronics you'll have no choice than to come see me :D (there is only one store on the island)

I'm Russian and that's the reason I disliked this video. Seemed like one of those idiotic stereotypes like "Americans are fat and stupid". There are a bunch of very good reasons for Murmansk to exist where it does, not the least of which is lives of millions of people that depended on this port during WW2.

Murmansk is not far away from Tromso so it enjoys similar weather, a bit colder during winter, a bit warmer during summer. Unlike other Russian Arctic ports, it's a warm-water seaport. It only makes sense to build a city in a place like this.

In Norway we differentiate between towns and villages. To become a town you have to have a certain amount of inhabitants. However a lot of towns does not really fulfill the criteria, but can still call themselves a town because they applied for “town-status” when the criteria were lower. This is the background of a decade-long discussion in Norway about who is the northernmost town. None of the settlements on Svalbard counts as they are villages. The two northernmost towns in Norway are: Hammerfest and Honningsvåg. Honningsvåg is definitely further up north but Hammerfest doesn’t recognize Honningsvåg as a town because they don’t fit the new town-criteria, even though Honningsvåg technically is one. Therefore Hammerfest (wrongly) claims the title “The northernmost town in the world”. Honningsvåg has about 3000 citizens and is the town by the North Cape (northernmost point in mainland Europe).

Unless you have a boatload of money, you're not going to want to go to Svalbard and when the plane lands, say "I'm living here." Stuff is expensive, a harsh climate, and housing is very limited. 0:14 ...no, it's not. Edinburgh isn't even the northernmost major city in Scotland. That would be either Aberdeen or Inverness. The northernmost town in Scotland is I believe Ullapool. As for the northernmost settlement in the UK, that would be Skaw, Unst, Shetland and Orkney.

Infrared Oh. Ha. I just put it together. Yeah. Your use of the words, "equally arbitrary system of measurement" threw me off. Looks like I have a little teaching to do. How many inches in a foot? 12. How many feet in a yard? 3. How many feet in a _mile?_ 5280. _This_ is what "arbitrary" looks like. Now, how many millimeters in a centimeter? 10. How many centimeters in a decimeter? 10. How many decimeters in a meter? 10. How many meters in a dekameter? 10. How many dekameters in a hectometer? 10. How many hectometers in a kilometer? 10. This is _not_ what "arbitrary" looks like. Therefore, the main advantage of the Metric System is, while just as useful as the Imperial System, it's _so much easier_ to _use,_ and I _know_ this because I know _both._ First, the United States played an essential part in _Napoleon's_ ascent to power. During his reign, the Metric System was designed in Napoleonic France. This means that the Metric System is something _we_ made possible. It would not exist if not for _us._ Second, the Metric System of measurement is _not_ arbitrary, as _you_ would know if _you_ had any idea how it works. The fact that you _don't_ shows me that you _don't_ know how it works and makes yet _another_ damning condemnation of this so-called "great" nation's educational system. The Metric System is _only_ about moving the decimal, while the Imperial System is about reworking the entire sequence of numbers. It moves this country _forward_ because it has been embraced by the global, scientific community; even the scientists in the United States. Now if you truly have so little appreciation for science that you don't _know_ that, consider that science paves the way for _engineering_ and _engineering_ developed the _Internet_ that _you_ now use to disrespect the system of measurement used by the global, scientific community. Now if you appreciate the Internet so much that you prefer to remain on it, I will thank you to learn how to use the Metric System (which is _not_ that hard). If not, then I will thank you to learn how to do without it and rid us of this anti-intellectual BS.

+Infrared 0° is not "moderately cold." It is the temperature at which water freezes. The Fahrenheit equivalent is 32. 100° on the Celsius scale means you are dead _if, for some reason, you happen to be in it,_ but it's _also_ the temperature (at sea level) at which _water_ boils. The Fahrenheit equivalent is 212. On the _Fahrenheit_ scale, 212° means you are dead, _if for some reason, you happen to be immersed in it._ Now, would you care to explain to me how it is more _human_ to say that water should freeze at 32 and boil at 212 instead of freezing at 0 and boiling at 100? And this is not a rhetorical question. I would like to know. I would like to _know._ I will be _watching_ for your answer to this question and if you don't provide it, I will know that you are not actually looking for an intelligent conversation. No, you do not _instinctively_ know how long a foot is. Something "instinctive" is something known without being _taught._ Clearly, what you _mean_ to say is that it is known _habitually._ You cannot remember a time when you did not know how long a foot was. You have lived with foot-long rulers as far back as you can remember. Thing is, if you _habitually_ know how long a foot should be, why are those rulers necessary? You say that centimeters are too short. Too short for what? You say that meters are too long. Too long for what? You say that you've never seen anyone use the decimeter. Actually, I understand that. The decimeter is something they used when I was learning the Metric System in fifth grade, as a midstep between the centimeter and the meter. It's helpful when one is first learning Metric conversion. "This distance is 1.5 meters." "No. It's 15 decimeters." "No. It's 150 centimeters." How are these distances different? They're not. They're just _written_ differently. Remember, I told you, the Metric System is about moving the decimal. Well, sometimes, you have to move it _two_ spaces, instead of just _one._ "This distance is 1.5 meters." "No. It's 150 centimeters." In this observation, though, you have tipped your hand _yet again._ You see, I've never seen anyone use the _dekameter_ or the _hectometer, either,_ but these are _also_ helpful midsteps in learning Metric conversion. "This distances is 1.5 kilometers." "No. It's 15 hectometers." "No. It's 150 dekameters." "No. It's 1500 meters." How are _these_ distances different? They _too_ are not. They _too_ are just _written_ differently. But sometimes, in moving the decimal, you have to move it _three_ spaces. "This distance is 1.5 kilometers." "No. It's 1500 meters." But, of course, this is a conversion people very seldom have occasion to make, so people very seldom have use for these units. You are asking how Metric is less arbitrary? In my previous comment I devoted an entire paragraph to illustrating this. If you still have not gotten it, it makes it look like I'm wasting my time which makes me particularly cautious about wasting any _more_ of it, so I will skip ahead. "...you people?" What is this group of people you conflate me with that you are so careful to separate _yourself_ from? "...and most people in the U.S. know the basics anyway." 😳 Good god. Are you serious? What are these "basics" that you refer to?

Could have included the northernmost naturally inhabited place, which is a small village Siorapaluk (just north of Qaanaaq) in north Greenland. Unlike in Svalbard, the greenlanders have been living there for thousands of years. It was only until 1818 the people in Qaanaaq first met an outsider and until then they thought they were the only people in the world. The former northernmost naturally inhabited village was Etah, but is a ghost village as of now. The people moved a little bit south to Qaanaaq as its a bigger place. Etah was slightly more north than Longyearbyen.

It is true that Svalbard is a visa free area, where anyone can just go, stay, and work. If you can find work, and if you have the money. However, GETTING TO Svalbard is not quite so easy. If you are a Schengen citizen, or if you don't need a visa to go to Schengen, then you can just go there. But I don't know of any commercial airlines that go to Svalbard, except those that go from Norway. And that is considered a domestic flight. Which means you need to get into Norway. Which means getting a Schengen visa.
