More often than not, the airline is used by ICE to transfer detained immigrants to Texas and drop them at the border, or fly them to the captial of countries that agree to let the US drop their citizens there directly (for countries that don't, they just drop the immigrant on a commercial flight).

This was a pretty good video, interesting info and it made me chuckle a couple times, but I was a bit frustrated that you used the part about Piper Kerman's "review" of the airline exclusively as a sponsor transition (though it was smooth). I wanted to hear a bit about what it's like from someone with first hand experience, and what she thought about it, you could've at least put in a one sentence quote from her :(. I remember in the Early 2000's the JPATS 727 would land, like clockwork, every Thursday between 11am and 1pm in Terre Haute. Was fun to see, especially since it was a 727-100 and there weren't too many of them flying in "Commercial" Service in the US.

I did 10 years straight in federal prison. And had to ride on an airplane about 20 times and alot of long bus rides across country. They call that desiel fuel. It's a secret punishment they do to inmates. They will fly you around for weeks to months at a time non stop. Or drive from California to Georgia and back to California. It's really uncomfortable and you start loosing your mind.

I wonder what the cost of transferring one prisoner from X to Y is in this system, compared to commercial aviation. Not saying general aviation should be used, I’d just be curious.

I'd imagine that either way a big part of the cost is the marshals. If using dedicated planes allows for a lower marshalls to prisoners ratio it could well be more economic, even if the cost per seat mile of the planes themselves was higher.

I used to work at a facility that housed federal inmates. The paperwork required to release an inmate to go on one of these airlifts was ridiculous. Also, it is US Marshal, not Marshall.

If you’re going to be pedantic, you need to also be accurate. There is one US Marshal per district. The rest are deputy or chief deputy US Marshals.

I would say that lack of a routine schedule is not "government inefficiency" as you claim here; but basic security protocol. Routine makes your operation predictable, which makes it vulnerable. If someone knows your routine, they know when you can be attacked most effectively. The only hurdle then is concentrating enough force to overcome your defenses at the chosen spot. Seems dumb that i would have to suggest this, but here it is.

A couple of corrections and additions: First, the Marshals are NOT armed while in flight, all firearms are stored in the baggage holds and the Marshals arm themselves before allowing any inmates to exit the craft. Second, the flights are not segregated by sex or by affiliation, females (or trans) are seated in the front and males in the rear, with seats filled back to front. Gang rivals are separated only by seat distance (unless someone is heading to SuperMax (ADX) for gang-related offenses, which would usually mean a dedicated flight). Third, some JPATS planes are 737's, but a few are MD-80's. ALL are piloted by US Navy personnel. I know this because I have made five total JPATS flights, as a passenger.
