What's the Official Name of Sonic's World? 🌍✨🤔

Okay so hear me out, Sonic lives on a planet that may or may not be Earth. Sometimes this blue hedgehog lives on a planet called Mobius but even when Sonic and friends are on Mobius they're still on Earth! This is wrinkling my brain. Join me as we look through every form of Sonic the Hedgehog media in order to establish what his home planet is called.

The way I’ve always interpreted it, Sonic’s planet is just Earth but with some alterations. Such as some of the continents having different shapes, and countries and world governments also having different names. And as you mentioned, the recent Tails Tube clarifies that the larger continents are largely inhabited by humans but the islands surrounding the continents are largely populated by Sonic, his friends, and others like them. Even the moon orbiting the planet looks almost exactly like our own. (Not counting the large crater caused by Eggman.)

There actually had been a time period where two worlds were considered to be on the same planet: the Age of Exploration/Colonial Age. When you think about it, the human world and animal world are Sonic’s equivalent of the Old World and New World.

5:15 The first time we see an animated Sonic talk about his planet is Adventures. "Mobius" is used in all the DiC cartoons, all the time, almost every other episode in AOSTH and Underground. The currency in those shows, "mobiums", also derives its name from the planet. 10:58 There's a little bit of setup beforehand, during and after the Adventure arc. Mobius being future Earth is actually and unused idea from SatAM, and the ruins in the OVA make me wonder if they were gonna go that route, too.

Thank you for sharing, tbh I had a really hard time finding info about the planet in the earlier Sonic shows and it's been literally over a decade since I really gave them a watch so I honestly couldn't remember. I checked out two episodes of SatAM to see if I could find anything and I couldn't so I called it there lol.

​​@@FantasticSamtastic "Mobius" is also the planet's name in Sonic Satam. In Season 1 Episode 6 (Sonic Racer),Snively and Robotnik decide to host a speed contest(and of course,it's trap for Sonic). And if you skip to around 6 minutes and 23 seconds. When Sonic is reading a paper about details for the contest,Sonic says: "Speed Contest. To determine the fastest on Mobius".

It is Earth (in the games). Sure, in Archie it's Mobius (technically Earth), but that is a different continuity. But I do think that Mobius being Earth was genius. It had set-up and was just done so well.

The people in Station Square calling themselves "humans" was not just to tie it into SA1, but they really were different from overlanders. The "Days of Fury" are explained to be the event that wiped out humanity, which is a good explanation.

Even if Sega still stands on its rules, it will forever be Mobius to me since it's much more original name that mediocre Earth. It would've been actually quite interesting if the humans called the planet "Earth" and claimed themselves as "Earthlings" while animals call it "Mobius" and "Mobians"(though I'm in the same minority of preferring Mobius and Earth being two separate similar distant plantets)

7:22-7:46 Oh so _that's_ the reason for the weird time crash mumbo-jumbo I've heard about. I was wondering how that could happen when it's just two different planets in the same universe, but apparently it's not. Good to know that it wasn't just the american canon that had "Sonic's planet" and Earth be the same place (I'm looking at you, Archie Sonic). Turns out Japan was having ideas that were just as crazy.

The IDW comics are in the same continuity as the games so the planet's name is still named Earth.

When referring to Sonic's World Planet, I say Mobius. Whenever I am referring to Sonic Anthro Animals, I say Mobians. Not trying to be mean, It is just how I view Sonic in any Media. You don't have to call it Mobius, be careful with the planet's name if you are working for the official Sonic games as of 2024 since SEGA chooses Sonic's World and nothing else.

the manuals of Spinball do give different explanations. In the US Manual, it says they’re on the planet Mobius. However, in the JP manual they say that Sonic, Tails, and Eggman travel to the Planet Mobius. Although this isn’t referenced in the Encyclo-speed-ia or Origins
