Lloyd’s of London has said it will pay £52million in ‘“equality initiatives” for the significant role it played in the transatlantic slave trade.
Approximately 3 million enslaved African people were transported by Britain’s shipping industry.
Julia Hartley Brewer speaks with Afua Hagan on whether they should be paid or not.

Plus there are now over 100,000 modern-day slaves in the UK according to the data which is a stain on our hard-earned civilised society...the vast majority from migrant gangs. Let's not even go down the increase in violence-directly-correlated-with-immigration path - whether 2nd, 3rd or 4th generations, it's all due to lack of integration, shared values/ethics/morals & general cultural incongruity, incompatibility nay irreconcilableness (is that the noun form of irreconcilable? LOL.)

When will they stop harping on about this topic. It looks as if they want compensation for being born black. Terrible things happened to all our ancestors but we don't keep whining on about needing compensation. Those people are dead, learn from history and move on. They also seem very entitled, to get on, work hard, compete against others of all colours but don't think being black opens doors, it should be on merit. There are black people out there that have worked very hard and achieved success, so the rest of them should stop trying to get money for nothing and get off your backsides, you have one life, stop moaning!

What about reparation for all the white people who didn't get jobs because minorities were prioritised over them for 'quotas'? The Thatcher/Major years were part of what was called "positive" discrimination, period. Positive means 'good,' right? This period saw white experienced workers losing job offers to anyone classed as a minority. Promotion boards within the civil service were held in which only minorities could apply and the standards were lowered specifically to enable them to pass. Where is the reparation for them? In the Thatcher/Major years again, astronomical amounts of funding and grants were given to minority areas under the 'Urban Programme' scheme. This funding was to be spent on minorities "only" and not the poorest white British areas. There was no real funding for white areas, 'nowhere even close to the funding for minorities.' Poor white working class areas and council estates had to rely on pitiful incentives from local governments in comparison to the minorities' massive central government funding. Where is their reparation for being overlooked?

Slave owners were paid by the British to guarantee the freedom of the men and women they held and claimed possession of. If the payment was made directly to the slaves, they would have remained enslaved, then been further victimised. (robbed of the payment). Then, many British men then lost their lives at sea battling to save and free slaves from the many transport ships, which finally stamping out the trade. This fight for freedom left many British families fatherless, the price of freedom is not fair to anyone - but it was paid in full.

In the US we've had reparations for decades. In colleges especially. And that was VERY detrimental to many many young black people. Eg.. A young black man for eg who would have thrived in a community college or trade gets into an Ivy League school with his middling grades and ends up failing out and uses up his precious college age time on something he failed at. It's a real thing that has happened many many thousands of times here in the US. And they get MANY more grants that I would never ever get. Like so many more. You should see the list of free money for being black in the US compared to being white or say Asian...That is trillions I'd wager. And then there's the fact that a HUGE majority of the black ppl in the US and UK came AFTER slavery. And then there's the fact that only 1% had the means to own slaves. Why should the people have to pay for something they or even their ancestors had nothing to do with? Or what about whites being the ones who freed them and didn't have to or weren't forced to. They even fought a civil war, killing their own and many cases family members met at battle for the freedom of slaves.. And then there's the fact that reparations would cause MASSIVE spite because we know we're not guilty of slavery. For eg. my fam is from Norway(who didn't have anything to do with African slave trade)and came to the US during WW1 and we've always lived in Maine where slavery wasn't a thing. WTH should my family pay? Which will cause spite which leads to hate. All around bad idea.

I don’t know what people seem to think a payout will suddenly make their lives better. For some that may be the case, but most people would probably waste whatever money they are given and there would undoubtedly be an increase in resentment from literally every other group.

British people claimed they abolished slavery. Slavery still continued long after it was formally abolished. It lasted over 300 years bringing wealth to pockets of colonizers and uk as well . colonizers paid taxes and donated huge amounts of money to Oxford and Cambridge universities.

To correct - in 1833 the UK government "compulsory purchased" the slaves in Jamaica - Then they promptly released those slaves. My ancestors as North Welsh farmers did not make anyone slaves - neither did the UK government allow slavery in England since 1125 - so why should my taxes be diverted to pay compensation especially to anyone who is less than 190 years old

Of course I know Africa is only poor because it was colonized by Britain and other European countries and because of the transatlantic slave trade which African leaders didn't participate in at all. I appreciate that Africa was a garden of Eden where social justice and equality prevailed, without wars slavery or poverty, prior to European colonization I realize that white people in Britain should be punished for impoverishing Africa, despite the fact that Britain was one of the first countries, if not the first, to abolish this transatlantic slave trade. I completely understand that the poverty of Africa has nothing to do with the incompetence, rapacity and dishonesty of African leaders since African countries became independent in the 1950's,1960's and 1970's. I realize that there have been many wars and genocides in African countries since they became independent, but I know this is the fault of western countries like Britain because they sold arms to Africa, not the African leaders who bought them. Obviously, we cannot expect African leaders to be responsible enough not to start wars one they have been sold weapons by western countries. Poor African countries have to make massive debt repayments to western banks which impoverish them; this is obviously the fault of western banks, not the fault of African leaders who have secreted billions of dollars in banks in Switzerland instead of using the money to help their countries. Because of Britain's historic role in creating poverty in Africa, I fully support calls for Western European countries and the USA to pay reparations to African countries now. I further think that everyone from Africa should be allowed to come and live in Britain and bankrupt Britain's benefit and national health system in order to punish white people in Britain for what their ancestors did to African people hundreds of years ago. Where Britain will get money to pay further reparations to African countries once it has been bankrupted in this way is anybody's guess; maybe Britain will be able to borrow money from banks in Africa to meet future obligations of this nature.
