Actually a super useful video, I was legitimately thinking about this exact topic yesterday playing some matches against my friends and noticed how much I was struggling with not getting hit during it. I'm pretty new to Tekken, 8 is my first serious attempt at getting into it and I've been playing since launch, but don't really use sidesteps often unless I'm going for Bryan's sidestep heat engager. So thanks for this video, and keep up the great work!

Ive never touched a tekken game before this one but i watched a few evo matches and kinda got hooked bought the game picked bryan because he looked sick and used kickboxing and your channel has been a huge part of helping understand not only bryan but tekken in general with how well you explain also you have your input display!(Idk why more people don’t when making guides it makes following along way easier) one of my main struggles was movement so this was a good timed video thank you 🙏

You're good at breaking down broad concepts into something managable even for my experience level as a first time fighting game player in Tekken 8. An advanced sidestepping vid would be very welcome. Hoping to use your tips against Dragunov effectively because, if the drag has more than room temp tekken iq, I feel like a toddler flailing against a gorilla.

I've been been doing a lot of tapping once to side side step and tap again but holding a bit to cancel to side walk. Even at relatively lower ranks, without knowing anything about the match ups I play, its been working great. With the extra distance you gain by side walking a bit you can make things whiff that are harder to side step, like for example electrics and the timing doesn't need to be so precise.

As someone abusing both offensive and sidestep sidesteps for years since Tekken 7 (playing Miguel, who had a great sidestep), I was trying to wrap my head around stepping strings and I always seem to get caught in this game on Bryan. it took me a long while to realize that for strings you really need to commit to a side-walk instead of a sidestep block. Sidewalking is also a lot more important when you're incredibly minus, for example after Bryan's df2 on block. This is in general made offence a lot better because I always viewed the options after df2 on block as either just committing to a duck, db3, testing a fast button, or trying to df2, delay 3.

Ty! Thanks for the video. I am struggling hard against Bryan lately. A couple friends all main him. I main Yoshi but for some reason have found Bryan to legit be my worst matchup even though i had thought I had the matchup down pretty well. I know I have a lot to learn but it is like all the moves I use regularly with Yoshi are so linear and Bryan is constantly in that -3 to +3 frame range meaning he has conplete freedom to step almost anything I am doing. Yoshi mains or Bryans that play against a lot of Yoshi, how do i hold them still??? My friends say I play too passive but that is because everytime I press anything it whiffs so damn hard to even microsteps. Bryans, what moves of Yoshi scare you? I know Yoshi is also a super strong character and it has to be user error, maybe there is an element of truth to Bryan being a tough matchup for Yoshi (fits the lore at least haha) but I am sure there is something I can do better other than throwing out -14 d,df2s and high f3s.

I've been finding more success doing side walking more than stepping. The hit boxes in this game are too wonky. Even walking all the way around to their back can get you clipped.
@na2cho
@na2cho 3 ай бұрын
The issue you may be facing is when you hit a button, your hit box will expand, so if you haven’t completely stepped the move and let it pass before you press something, you can still be hit.

A good amount of “linear” moves have to be sidestepped a certain direction, but can be sidewalked both directions. The trade off being that it is harder to take advantage of the whiff. You can try to read a linear move and sidewalk and then punish immediately, but this leaves you even more vulnerable as cancelling a sidestep/walk into an attack expands your hurtbox massively. Implementing sidestep blocking can help alleviate this. you’ll find that it doesn’t take much distance to step jabs, especially if it is stepped in the right direction(rule of thumb: the arm the attack uses is the side it is weakest, i.e. a 1 jab is their left arm and so is stepped left. this is not always the case and it is much better practice to lab the direction but it can be easily trial and error’ed mid match). sidestep blocking can also help crush frame traps. the usual moves that follow plus frames are usually linear. and if the opponent decides to push their advantage with a slower move(they’re reading that you would respect their frames and just hold back to block) they’ll be blocked. unless you play jack or bears then 🤷🏿‍♂️

i prolly built a bad habit but like 7/10 i like to step on block and depending on the move on hit. Also ss charts are useless when fighting someone who can adapt or you’re fighting a character that isn’t too linear or has good options that track both ways, but they’re a good starting off point in the match up.

Where I'm at on stepping is learning where to step during strings currently. What's still unclear for me sometimes is how big a punish I can do. I try to launch most of the time but somtimes even if I've stuffed, an opponents whiff recovery has them safe before I connect my launch...

Hey, gr8 job. But i think there is crucial thing in steping that you have to consider its frames. like you dont usually try to stepsomeone at -9(atleast when i try i get hit). So you have to have enough frames in the first place to even try.

Imo this is one of the hardest skills to learn, implement and master. Currently I kinda guess. Like round start SS then punish if they whiff something. I start to do it if I see a lot of thrown attacks. Yet I still get clipped by none tracking moves or strings since they kinda auto correct. But when I do it correctly it gives me a huge edge in the match. Nothing like starting a round with an unbreakable throw. It puts fear into the opponent.

I find sidestep blocking difficult, i usually end up just blocking the sidesteppable move. Would it be a good training drill to set a bot to do 2 things after a blocked jab, a sidesteppable move and a tracking move and then try to sidestep block, if i block the sidesteppable move that would mean i blocked too early and if i get hit by the tracking move i blocked too late?

How are players like Arslan ash able to demand respect from their opponents? Im a TGS, and most of my games are still string spam, and complete and utter garbage. Im not able to ever play small tekken without my opponents being complete nuts, and I never see this junk at the highest level of play.

That's exactly why lol, if high level players did the strings you see in your ranked games against Arslan they'd be getting punished and destroyed for it. The ranked system in this game isn't great, so even at the highest ranks you will find people who just throw out stuff all the time.
