Will esports ever be officially a part of the Olympics?
Depending on who you ask, the Olympics may actually need esports, more than esports need the Olympics.

I love that idea, especially since in suprisingly a lot of esports there's no actual world cup, no place where countries can face up instead of franchises. And it could be the starting point that many countries need to be able to put up a fight against South Korea.

@@yaboymike2274 esports doesnt need to be in the olympics to do that though, it especially doesnt need to deal with ancient rulings and people who have absolutely no idea about any of the games included in tournaments, esports is doing great and will do even better without 60+ year old dudes trying to make it watchable for the wrong target audience - if you're talking about better contracts and safety for the players, sure, but all of that can be achieved without any of the out-of-date regulations and hoops it had to go through

This. I can't see eSports being featured in the Olympics unless they decide to choose two or three games as the most 'representative' eSports based on some arbitrary metric.

The issue I have with esports at the olympics is that the games are not stable. The games are marketing from companies. In 4 years, the games are going to change way more than any sports actually would. Should Valve be the one receiving the money, or is it a Riot thing. Esports are sports, but the place in the Olympics are messy.

Exactly, the balance of games doesn't really fit. I would really like to see an international competition specifically for gaming. Have tournaments of all the popular multiplayer games like csgo, lol, dota2, overwatch, rocket league, fortnite, valorant, starcraft 2, etc. and you can even have speedrunning competitions of popular singleplayer games like portal 1&2, mario 64, hollow knight, minecraft, etc. It would have a bunch of problems with publishers and creating an organisation big enough to host it would be insanely difficult but it would be really cool to see and experience games that you don't personally play at the top levels

The problem with Esports at the Olympics is not being digital, is being a product of a company. You can play and use all trademraks of Soccer and Chess without paying a dime to anyone, but all Esports we know are BRANDS of private companies: you can't use their IP without permission, you can't play them if the company shuts down its servers. The IOC won't be able to include all Esports on the market (there are still a lot of traditional sports to be included), so they will have to chosse to include A and leave B out, which will be seen as corporate interests taking over a global event.

My buddy and I were discussing something similar last night. I saw there was a petition to have Yu-gi-oh as an Olympic sport, so we theorized that a Fall or Spring Olympics for "not as sporty" sports would be the way to go. Stuff like eSports, traditional and non-traditional card games (Poker, MTG, etc.), board games (Chess, Catan, Risk, etc.), and whatnot. That way the Summer/Winter Olympics still maintain their integrity, other competitive sports are represented, and everyone is happy.

I agree to the fact that eSports would be out of place in the Olympics. It being a celebration of sport and the largest sporting event in the world garnering talent from all over the world. What would be cool is to see an Olympics for videogames itself, where there is competition in different game genres itself. 👍🏿

Esports would feel very out of place in the Olympics. The Olympics shows off the *physical* performances of athletes. Esports is more virtual than physical, and that's where the line draws for me. This is coming from an athlete (predominately swimmer) and gamer.

Honestly I don't think Esport is compatible with the olympics Anyone who thinks the olympics should include anything competitive either doesn't watch them or clearly doesn't get the point, the olympics are a celebration of body and human limits versus the law of physics there's a reason why they were hesitant to include even golf in the olympics, and it's the same reason why chess isn't included although one could argue it's a lot more competitive and organised than any esport out there What I would like to see is a seperate global event didicated to esports, sort of like Evo wich I think is a brilliant example of how Esports could go global

I think the biggest Problem is the Longevity of any Esport. Most Sports has been around for Years so to have Games be played for Decades, which would definitely qualify them for the Olympics. I could see a E-Olympics tho, every 4 Years showcasing the 5 biggest Shooter, 3 biggest Fighters, or something around that. Bc we all know Games will not last long we have to keep it fresh too. I actually hope the Olympics don't adopt Games as I would think any would boycott either the sports or esports or just plain not watch it, giving the possibility to just outright blame games or anything bad that happend.

Just found this video and I gotta say it’s still relevant. Like some of the others in the comments, an eOlympic games would make more sense for a specific reason you mentioned-the companies. The way regular Olympics operate wouldn’t go well since companies like Capcom and ArcSys literally own their games. It would make more sense to have a separate event so that rules and regulations surrounding the games can be fine-tuned for esports specifically. Though tbh it sounds like the real reason they don’t want us is because they’re boomers lol. Also keep in mind some games like Mortal Kombat are literally banned in some countries, so that may be an issue for an eOlympics when trying to reach as many people as possible.

I think the main problem with letting esports into the Olympics is that video games are made and owned by corporations, and aren't universal games like Soccer or Track is. The board would have to essentially allow corporations to have a seat at the table and that is fucked and they shouldn't allow it. I'm all for an international esports festival but I don't think one of our biggest tenants of international peace and community should let Blizzard or Nintendo have any sort of power over entire genres

I'm sorry but the olympics are meant for what a human body can do at its physical peak, it's simply wrong to have Usain Bolt and a LoL player and think "hmm, yeah, these athletes are both at a comparable level". eSports have their own tournaments and that's all they need

the brain is part of the human body and there are already events that require very little physical strength but instead fine motor skills such as shooting. also trying to compare any athletes across the sports is pointless giving the massive spread of sports that are on display a shooter would not be able to compare themselves at all physically to a weight lifter but that weight lifter wouldnt be able to match the shooters finesse.

the IOC make really good points though, I mean promoting more children to stay inside at home playing video games is ultimately not the message the Olympics should be sending to the youth, promoting esports that require more physicality like sim racing, erowing and eCycling would ultimately benefit the youth of tomorrow much better than traditional esports whilst simultaneously shedding light to the esports world to the casual viewer.

You know that the Olympic committee is so out of touch with people that even the gamers in the young people that they’re trying to bring to the Olympics don’t even agree with their decision. We don’t even think that gaming should be part of the Olympics because the Olympics is based on athletic skill. And there’s nothing athletic about gaming.
