We tested the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid over a 300 mile torture test to see if Ford can hit its MPG numbers in the real world. The Maverick Hybrid starts at $20,995 and is the cheapest truck you can buy in America. In fact, it's one of the most inexpensive vehicles you can buy today.
These trucks are popular and reservations for the 2023 model should open up this summer.

In regards to the Hybrid only having Fwd. Keep in mind that Fwd cars do very well in snow and and ice because the weight of the drive train is on the driven wheels. Also, the Maverick has a semi-sophisticated traction control system that imitates an LSD setup in the front. With some good winter traction tires I don't think many customers will be disappointed in the Fwd only Hybrid.

It seems maybe Ford may getting ready to introduce a 4WD/AWD hybrid. After all, they offer it in their other vehicles that have the same powertrain.

In 20 years I've only driven FWD cars in Michigan, on all-seasons no less, and while I'm on the east side of the state that doesn't quite get the same snow totals as the west, I can count on maybe one hand when I felt I could have used more traction. If anything, I've been limited by ground clearance. So FWD only shouldn't be a deal breaker in a lot of places. Even some good snow tires would probably suit 98% of peoples needs. AWD I imagine would probably make things a lot easier though, and less stressful. It's all a moot point because dealers and inventory are still all screwed up and I'd probably have a better chance of driving home in a new 4x4 F-150. 😅

@@OnTheRocks71 Some of the newer all seasons are considered all weather tires. They are snow rated. They are equal to snow tires of 20 years ago, but you can use them in the heat.

I’ve had my Maverick for a little over 10K miles now. Simple answer to mileage: you get great mileage in city driving when you drive conservatively….. in the 50+ mpg range. Drive aggressively, it’ll drop depending on how aggressive. I’ve gotten 60+ a few time between where I live and a nearby town (usually heavy traffic). When I’m behind slow drivers, I always get around 51-54, and occasionally in the low 60’s. When the road is open, I drive faster and mileage drops to 32-38 range.

I test drove this over the weekend on 8/20/2022 at Ford of Orange in California. Gotta say. love the Hybrid Lariat version. Very nice leather interiors, push button start, nicer trims. The truck was very quiet. Drives like a car, didn't feel like a truck at all and very good suspension. Its a hybrid, so is slower than the 2.0L turbo. But still gets up and go. Put into perspective. Been driving a 2001 Frontier Truck, 2.4L and that thing only gets 143 HP. the Hybrid is quick enough for city driving. Its a great truck at $28900 (Lariat Hybrid with no added extras)

Cool video. I actually think 0-60 under 8 seconds is impressive at elevation, particularly in a vehicle that costs 20K brand new. Also, a front drive vehicle with winter tires is generally very effective in snow. It wouldn’t compare to an F-150, but compared to a Corolla or other low priced, entry level vehicle, it’s more than respectable. And as far as comfort goes, anybody well over 6 feet tall would likely prefer a Maverick to a Corolla whether you’re going across town or on a long drive like the one in your video. The drawback may be if you try and drive it for 15 or 20 years like you could do in a Corolla. Corollas just don’t die.

Snow tires or All-Weather Tires that Nokian invested is an amazing option. It is mud and snow rated but can also be used in warm weather. I had nothing but impressive experience sith Nokian plus all their tires are low rolling resistant so it should suit the hybrid well. I got these tires for my moms Corolla and they were fine with decently high unplowed snow. Which otherwise for regular all-Seasons I would be very concerned with. My next tires will definitely be a Nokian All-Weather tire. Which again is amazing tires overall. They have lower end all weather if money is a concern. Check their website for the names. Bec most tire companies DO NOT know the difference between "All-Weather" and all-Seasons which DO NOT have the Mud and snow Rating as All-Weather's do. Mind you their are other brands that make All-Weather. But, honestly, nokian is premium and is KNOWN for snow tires. They also recently created a tire manufacturing plant in the US. Which, I kind of want to visit if they do tours. I just have passion for tires and safety. Most cases these tires are good enough as long as the snow isn't so high your car becomes a snow plow. Which, in most cases isn't an issue in a small truck. Any questions let me know.

They arent typically lying so much as making a bad guess. Most of the ones Ive seen are taking an average of what the car thinks the fuel consumption is over the last few miles. The average smooths out some of the peaks. But it also is not an average of the entire trip. So if you look at it only after a long downhill it looks like your overall economy is better than it actually is. If you look at it after a long uphill, it will look worse. It is also certainly possible that the estimator is expecting the electric motor to kick in more than it is. Again, not technically a lie, just a bad estimate.

Thanks for sharing, Eric. Dealer markups will be a thing of the past "soon." Never top off your fuel as you did. My topping off is equivalent to a couple ounces. We'll see how well Ford does with the new model. I love the engine options Ford gave us, unlike what Hyundai did with the Santa Cruz, we have a weaker hybrid engine getting great mpg, and a powerful ecoboost, but on the Hyundai, you also get a powerful i4 engine option, but the base model comes with a naturally aspirated i4 that’s not that powerful, and doesn’t get good mpg, ohhh, and if you want that more powerful engine, it’s gonna cost you at least $30k, with the Maverick, both engines cost the same, great job ford🫡

thanks for the review. However, you are forgetting a few things. Did you fill up from where you filled up before the trip. Each pump is going to be different when filling a tank. Secondly, hills are brutal on mileage. When manufacturers test vehicles the are ideal conditions and not everyday conditions. So, the mileage will be somewhat off. I had a Maverick on order and cancelled it after finding out the truck won't be built until sometime in 2023. I drive a (and would keep it) a Prius Prime that is electric and then switches to hybrid when the charge is gone. I'd love to see the Maverick or a small Toyota built similar. I'd pick one up when the shortages are over.

I don't really feel like it's lying as you took it up a mountain and mpg on the odometer is the average not even supposed to be accurate. If you did the same miles on all flat road it would be closer to accurate. Vehicles at high elevation have to work harder and the computer isn't going to know what the elevation is and do the calculations. Even you said on the video the mpg going change going up and down the mountain, which will obviously make it inaccurate. That would be like if I drove 300 miles and floored every now and then. This is just my experience with my 2020 Ranger. Driving around miami is pretty flat, but when I go to Georgia, Tennessee, NC and SC. When I drive to Orlando for example the truck would pull 20mpg but once I go past into the 500miles it's in the 24s then when I get up to the 700s in the trip it would drop to 22-23. If I reset the trip meter and drive like very light (somewhere around 2rpm) it could show me 30mpg. At least once a year I make those trips so like I said that's just my opinion. From 26,000 miles So if you want to see what the real numbers are run that same trip 2x on same day or atleast run it till the tank is almost empty. Also when I first got my truck I was doing 14mpg found out it was my fault heavy foot. Once using cruise control I noticed the truck has a sweet spot on the rpms. Ranger is a 10speed though.

I think it's unnecessary to "top up "with the extra 1/3 gallon or so, once the pump automatically shuts off...Unless you did the same thing at the fill up at the start, with the Exact same amount of " top up " you would not be getting a completely accurate number of the amount of fuel burned..

My Tacoma 4 cylinder gets 21-23mpg if I drive conservatively and it has horrible visibility, a horrible seating position, cheap ugly interior, is way slower and cost thousands more. I have a double cab so the payload is the same and my bed is only 6 inches longer. Factor in lower initial purchase price and lower operating costs and the whole higher trade in value argument goes out the window. Before someone argues about reliability, lookup high mileage Ford Escape hybrid taxis, they run for 300-400k miles. It's a Mazda designed 4 cylinder and Ford has been making reliable hybrids for well over a decade.

Being only FWD is a deal breaker. Admittedly FWD can do better than RWD in some muddy conditions, not having an AWD option takes this one off the table for me. I could see myself driving one of these if it had a 4WD or AWD option. I hate the name though, the Maverick is a nice, classic car. They should have called it the Ford Stranger as it's a strange Ranger.
