The fingerprint isn't really a security thing since you must have a pincode or password to use the fingerprint feature. So basically when you use the fingerprint feature, your real security is a pincode or password. The fingerprint is just there to open your phone faster.

It’s not, passcodes are for when your finger is sweaty or something and the finger print scanner doesn’t work

In the US there is an extra level of legal protection in using a passcode rather than a fingerprint. If you should be arrested (or detained “by consent”) by police acting outside their constitutional authority, I.e. no search warrant, it is legal for them to force your phone up against your finger to unlock it, but not to force you to reveal information, such as a passcode, that would violate your Fifth Amendment protection against possible self incrimination. So if your phone (at least an iPhone) is powered off, it must be unlocked the first time after powering on by the passcode; the fingerprint will not work. And you have a right not to provide that.

How can biometric be any more safe than pin code. All the phones require you to input a pin code as a backup for fallback where biometric authentication fails. Am I missing something?
@SyukriLajin
@SyukriLajin 7 жыл бұрын
yes. and then the same pin can be use to add their own fingerprint into the system. so now they have access to everything that was set up the fingerprint scanner instead of their original password( google play payment, android pay, banking apps). it's like having one master password for everything, but the password to access the masterpassword is a 4 digit pin or a dumbass pattern.
@TranscendTheSun

Yeah, biometrics are not very secure, but they are hella convenient, instead of have to turn it on and swipe it and put the passcode in, all you gotta do is pick up your phone and tap the button

I don't get it tho. If you use a fingerprint unlock, you still need a pin as a back up so it's no safer. Because you still have a pin or pattern code

Daniel Fisher If only using a pin someone can easily watch you enter it and do it themselves. If you have a pin as backup no one will see you use it because your fingerprint is usually scanned correctly.

I don't use biometric unlocking methods for my devices. The reason is that at least in USA the law enforcement agencies are allowed to force you to unlock your devices using your biometrics. So I encrypt my devices and their micro SD cards. And I use passwords for my devices.

@Jotakumon

+Jarod Vincent The problem is that an officer might already have your phone, and cuffed you. The officer is then allowed to unlock your phone through the fingerprint scanner. The best you can do at that point is yell "ok Google, shut down the phone", and hope that it works. At that point, they lost. Just tried it. "Ok Google, power off" (that's the right command). Answer: "Sorry, power controls is not yet supported." Damn. Maybe with Android Oreo, or on the Pixel Phone.

Geeky Ashim - Either you are a troll looking to stir up some drama or a blind sheep. It is normal for law enforcement agent/officer to fit whatever evidence (Including data) to fit what they think is the truth. Including stitching in some of what they think happened within the evidence. There you have an innocent person being proven guilty of something they didn't do. Therefore you must keep as much as possible from them in order to give them less to work with in stitching their story of you doing bad things that you didn't do. But you already knew that. You just want to stir up some drama.

I've heard, no clue if it is true, but if you want protection from Police or the Government biometrics is super weak. They can take your fingerprint or photo so they can use your fingerprint or face to open the phone. While a passcode is considered different and they can try to force you by judge order to give it them but can't compel it out of you as long as you are willing to pay the price of refusing. Anybody know if this is true or not?

I think that for many people the fact that "hello pink horse at noon" is safer than $8cZ1!?A?bb% is interesting. Both for remembering the pw and for avoiding typos. As for remembering it even more easily it might help to associate it with something you can visualize or something absurd or dirty. Maybe connect different passwords with the specific place the pw is for: gmail with a postman for example. Make it safe and easy :)

There is one major difference between biometric security and passcodes and that is access by law enforcement. Except at border entry points (this issue is still under litigation) law enforcement will need a warrant to search your phone. If they can show probable cause and get the warrant they can force you to open the phone with biometrics, be it fingerprint or iris scan. Why? Because those are things that you "are" like giving up a blood sample after a DUI arrest. However, passcodes are something you know. Most courts have held that information you know is protected by the 5th amendment. You cannot be forced to give your passcode, even with a warrant.

yeah but it has to be looking at your face. also not really. I can unlock my Huawei WHILE im taking it out of my pocket, with my fingerprint. A biometric snacer needs to see your face so you have to take out of you pocket, have line of site (pretty decent one cause the scanners are still quite bad in that sense) and then wait for recognition.

An RFID ring might be the best solution. The ring could have your own password and a number. You can't change the number but can change the password. Phone would be useless unless in range of the ring. Also, the phone would not require unlocking it would just check for the ring occasionally. This could also be used to unlock your door, start your car, etc. Thief could take your ring, but you could use a secure website to change the password on the phone, thus locking it remotely. Or of course, there's the electronic serial number, which can also be disabled from the provider side. One problem with passwords on the phone and fingerprints is that a thief can snatch the phone from your hands while you are using it, and then keep the screen active by using it and thus have full access long enough to get private info. Out of range of the ring, it would lock up automatically.

Who do you live with that would do that? Or, do you actually think someone is going to break into your home while you’re sleeping, head straight for your phone, grab your hand and scan a couple fingers until it unlocks, all without you waking up? You’re delusional. If someone is bold enough to break into your home, and they really want your phone, they’ll wake you up and force you to give up the password.

As far as I know the Operating System on your device is locked using a PIN/Pass-code. This is mandatory before you add any type of bio-metric data. The bio-metric data is just an equivalent for the pass-code required to unlock to OS - and it's only use is for convenience - it is way faster to put your finger on the sensor while taking the phone out of the pocket than input a password. Basically adding a fingerprint or iris data just adds additional attack vectors for potential hackers -so in no case more secure.

I have a dot connection thingy on my phone. The biggest thing to worry about, is police can force you to unlock your phone if you have bio metric security. Just like they can force you to take a photograph or fingerprint you when your arrested. So when you have another form of security, your phone is more secure, because no one can (legally) force you to give access to your device.

I've never used any security method on my phone, I had no password or anything like that. Now I'm using finger print reading just because it's cool. I gave my GF my phone pin anyways. And I don't have any relevant information on my phone that could be worth the time of hacking it. I'm not too paranoid on hackers (and for some reason my Instagram account got hacked twice last month, through my PC's browser, I got only 4 pictures there xD. scanned PC for malware and spyware, changed to 2 step authentication on Insta and was solved) Also I don't really care about companies "spying", they all do, you won't escape them all. Let them offer us what we want, I'm not a big money waster anyways...

fingerprint scanner. is read only... if it can be read can't it be copied. like a read only document. you can only see and copy it but not paste into it. so if a hacker gets into your phone they can copy it and game over. all your data in your phone and in the world about you can be found. forgot if he said the file stored is encrypted or not. that being said. I use fingerprint scanner. and pass code backup. I wish it was pattern backup instead but o well you can't have everything.

I think the best solution to better security would be combined authentication. Use a password combined with fingerprint, face, voice simultaneously. This would make it much harder to gain access. In addition, by using multiple parameters, each parameter could be "looser' to increase speed and reduce computational load.

Biometric is usually more secure, but you can still be forced to unlock. Even the TSA can make you unlock your phone. But if you have a randomized alphanumeric password that also includes symbols, along with limiting password attempts, this would make it impossible to bruteforce unless the person doing it could somehow bypass the encryption but a lot of companies at least havent been making or giving backdoors. Also, with modern phones even if you could bruteforce the password you could easily force that process to take months or years with a good password and a good os

Network already logs all incoming and outgoing calls, messages, and DNS traffic. When the phone is used. Where the phone moves around. Which sites you visit, all unencrypted traffic you send or receive online. They also retain recorded voice and text data for a while (for legal reasons). Although other people (friends, family, partner) don't have access to anything you've hidden/deleted, but that's a different sort of trust issue altogether.

I have used a bio-metric system that read your fingerprint and it not only looked at your fingerprint but had a pulse detector and UV and infrared lights. So basically you could not cut off someones finger and use it. Nor could you use a gelatin mold of someones finger. Also no fingerprints were stored in the servers or on the device. When it read your fingerprint it would attach a string of numbers to it. These strings of numbers could not be used to make a fingerprint. When you re-scanned your fingerprint it would match the numbers. So even if you could break into their servers there was no way you could get any fingerprint information. Not saying this device was totally "hack" proof because nothing is. But it is leaps and bounds beyond the bio-metric devices in smartphones.

For everyone to save you a few minutes, use passwords as your main security. I read a few years ago about a technology used to scan the veins and structures of your hand rather than fingerprint or other skin surface structures to use as a password. Maybe in the future a version of this could be added to the backs of phones to allow a user to more securely lock their phone, as well as unlock it just by picking it up and holding it in their hand. I'd take that feature over the notch anyday.

BlackBerry Picture Password method is quite unbeatable. It also gives you only 10 chances, after that: phone is wiped. It works with an image of your choice and on top of that it put a grid full of random numbers, you have to move the number you set to a particular place of the picture. It's not the fastest unlock method, but I think is one of the most secure.

I am getting a phone with a fingerprint sensor. I have had family members guess my pass code because it is usually a date they know or a number of relevance to me. People have seen me enter the passcode and I have also very easily picked up on someone's pattern by simply observing them only once. Fingerprint sensors completely prevent that from happening, so I do prefer those.
