Unimogs are highway capable farm tractors, they're available with attachment points for farming implements, the zetros is a great off road cargo carrier but in pure off road capability it's not even in the same league.

Yeah the most it could be with 44 inch tyres is 22 inches - minus half of the axle thickness. We are looking 20 inches max. Still very impressive, but definitely not 3 feet. Edit: forgot about the portal axles, it could possibly be up to 2 feet.

It'll always be Jeeps and anything similar in size and capability. Unimog is great if you're trying to haul a few tons in the back. But on a trail, it's just too big and too cumbersome. A Wrangler, Bronco, Rover, or G-Wagon properly equipped will out wheel a Unimog any day.

@@dark_winter8238 I live in the Pacific Northwest. The "small trees" are usually 2ft thick. I end up getting denied on some trails just in my Land Cruiser because it's still wider than most Jeeps. A Unimog of that size wouldn't be able to get in a lot of places out here with all the heavy forests.

@@backwerdsman There are small Unimogs though, the 411 is the size of a Jimny at 3.52m long and 1.63m wide. Granted, with 35hp it's not fast, but it has portal axles, 1000kg of cargo capacity, diff locks, pto shaft, pneumatic three-point hitches and many other amenities. They're just too damn expensive these days.

A 6x6 and anything over that won't ever beat a 4x4 due to its physical restrictions. The more wheel is not there to produce more mobility, it is rather there to be able to privide **similar** capabilities as a 4x4, but with more cargo load. A 6x6 would never could cope with the angles this small 4x4 here does with ease.

Although allow me to point out that in terms of mobility, the Zetros would easily outperform the Tatra Phoenix even on a bad day with an unskilled driver, simply due to its smaller size/power ratio. Just as in my other comment here, more wheels/axles doesn't mean that it is better - they are designed for entirely different things than what a Zetros is/was, how you gonna compare them?

The ultimate offroader needs to be able to be recovered if it gets stuck. That thing weighs as much as 3 f150s... you arent recovering that if it gets stuck. The ultimate needs to be small and able to fit into tight spaces as well to get around trees. That might be the ultimate overlander though. Looks big enough to have a good sized set up for lomg trips offroad

They're not as great as you'd think actually, we had an agri spec Unimog on a completely flat, bone dry but very sandy field which completely bogged out and needed rescuing by a tractor. My 2wd car and a transit van had driven across the same field earlier without any issues.

I wasn't driving it. It looked as if the sheer weight caused it to sink. (Luckily there was Massey Ferguson on hand to pull it out). I'm not sure how you define the best off roader, depends on the expected conditions, this wouldn't even fit where my old Landrover would go. It didn't seem overly reliable either, seemed very very complicated compared to a regular tractor. I like Unimogs but I don't think I'd want to own one.

I've driven these in the Swiss Alps for decades, through rugged terrain and trough mud/rain/snow, and as a former soldier, have also used them on several occasion in the sands of the Arabian desert, during training. I just can't see where/how it couldn't go where a 2wd or a tractor can (ok, maybe I can imagine places a tractor could go but an Unimog couldn't...). Same as with that Massey Ferguson: with an unskilled driver, even that is going to get stuck at a place where it shouldn't.

I have wheeled with Sonny Honnegger back in the day, he imigrated from switzerland, had a full arsenal of military surplus rigs, and chose to build a small light coil sprung flatfender Jeep. If was wheeling somewhere else I might wheel something else. AZ has super steep rocks, sand, slickrock, forests and alpine meadows. I know Europe has great stuff, but not much terrain requiring 4 wheel steer buggies with water filled front tires.
