I visited Wheels Through Time on 8/21/22, one day after this video. It was my first visit, and I didnt' expect to meet Matt, let alone get the chance to talk with him for a few minutes. He and the staff were so, so friendly and accessible. It was worth the trip! I had a chance to see Big Fish and the raffle bike and spent two hours roaming through the museum. Go, you will not be disappointed. Thanks to Matt and everyone at Wheels Through Time for sharing their space and collection with us.

My wife and I drove from Wisconsin to Maggie Valley to see the museum. It is everything they say it is. The staff is amazing, everyone is there. We got to see Matt given out rides on a a flathead side car. Even got to watch him and his friend adjust the points. We will be going back this year. Only wish it was open 7 days a week! We went 3 times! Beautiful Mountains too!

@skgate

yeah but theres 1000x more sportsters than there are flatheads, knucklehead, and before.. there wouldn’t be enough room to collect ironheads. they go for 5k max, so that would be too easy to fill the place up with them. i’m sure there’s at least one ironhead there.

I have to go to the website and purchase a small fortune worth of raffle tickets because not only is that 37 Knuckle the most beautiful Knuckle I have ever seen but the preservation of all that history and those machines is very important and definitely should be supported by any of us that can. Every dollar counts these days no matter what it's used for and every donation that helps such a worthwhile place remain open is money well spent no matter how small or big it is. I am definitely going to be making a trip out to the WTT museum in person asap. But until then I had better help make sure it's open when I can finally get to it. 😉

People like flat heads in the old days because they would run very cool due to their low compression. They were also very easy to kick over with their low compression. They were very tolerant about running on garbage fuel. Flat heads for also cheaper to manufacture and easier to maintain. Tuned right they had great potential.

When Harley-Davidson came out with the knucklehead they sued Crocker. They had a Crocker and a knucklehead in the courtroom in front of the judge. The judge looked at the Crocker and then look at the Harley and then told Harley that they were lucky that Crocker wasn't suing them.

I grew up just a few miles from Maggie. I've dreamed of having a Knuckle Head since 1956 when my uncle gave me a ride on his. He told me to save my money and I could buy one for $140.00. That was like a million dollars to me then. I did eventually have Harleys but never a Knuckle Head. I'm an old man now but I still dream of getting bugs in my teeth.

Actually Harley-Davidson had a 21 OHV single-cylinder road model in the 1920s. Knucklehead was the first OHV road twin. In the teens several companies made road model OHV singles and twins: Royal Pioneer, PEM, Pope, Cyclone, Jefferson, etc. After that in the 1920s things regressed. The 1936 Knucklehead was a Renaissance in motorcycle technology.

Are you sure you want to give yours away? I noticed the auction one had a fender light too. The same fender lights and fender tip gizmo were used on a range of Indians and Harleys until the 40's. Indian added the iconic war bonnet/Indian head fender light in 1940 , I think.

I think there is actually a mistake on the raffle bike. The center section of the tank badge on the raffle bike does not have a black line at the end of it and the gold extends a little further than your bike. Both of them can't be right. I'm betting Harley put a black line at the end but I may be wrong. It will be interesting to know. Keep the good stuff coming.

What was the name of the builder that made the home-made bike using a car four cylinder engine? It was huge and Dale rode it on one episode of "What's In The Barn?". The builder was later killed in a shoot out with the cops. Dale bought a mini-bike type scooter also on this episode. I can't find anything on KZbin about the giant home-made bike.

You can go to S&S and buy a brand new knucklehead Flathead Panhead Shovelhead Evolution motor, primary transmission. You can buy the frame you want the sheet metal you want the instruments you want have everything painted or powder coated before you put it together and for a third of the cost of the $121,000 motorcycle you could have your own built to your own specifications. The money men have placed too much value on everything because they don't want to have their money in dollars they want to have their money in something else so they pay ridiculous prices for Stuff. That's great if you're selling but it's bad if you're buying. It's a case of people paying silly money for something and then selling it to somebody else for even a higher price who sells it to somebody else for even a higher price. When I first started riding my little Honda in the early '70s I rode with Harley guys and all the road were old flat Edge Knuckleheads and panheads because they couldn't afford a new Harley. They were just used motorcycles not a top dollar collectible. Now they have all vanished from the roads.

Are the auction and raffle bikes numbers matching? That makes a difference with value. Do you have to pay taxes on that value of around 100,000? Nevertheless even if it is not numbers matching that rarity of a 37 is big money.
