I've always been partial to cloches, beanies and fedoras. I used to wear a cloche during winter time and a fisherman's hat when I was in elementary school. The salakot is the traditional hat in my country. It is sometimes worn as part of the national costume. It is worn my some farmers when working on the rice fields.

I live in the Northeastern US and often wear a knit hat during winter. They have been very popular on college campuses during the cold months. My mom likes to knit or crochet them for me, so they are also personalized. They can be slouchy or not so slouchy (I prefer a closer fit). I've been thinking about picking up a big floppy sun hat for outdoor summer weddings because I don't want my makeup to be smudged by sunglasses. Thanks for the inspiration!

Justine Leconte officiel I think trilby hat and floppy hat are popular in Ukraine, and baseball cap, it's more popular than hats. I'm concerned about wind, how to secure a hat from falling because of it?

I work in a hat shop in Los Angeles and I am happy to report that we get young people buying their first grown up hat regularly. Watching as they find a hat that makes them feel like they're making a bold and conscious choice as to the kind of adult they want to be seen as, is quite moving. Also, porkpies are pretty popular amongst artsy people of all ages around here. Love the channel, your presentational style, and your perspective on fashion!

I love wearing hats. When I walk the dogs I generally wear a panama hat. In the winter a trilby, if it's very cold it'd be a beanie, though that's not a favourite. For more dressed looks I wear vagabond, floppy or cartwheel hats. I use a lot of vintage hats going back to 1915, though I don't wear the really old ones, as they need a more structured hairdo. I secure my hats with hat pins, vintage bought on ebay. I am on the lookout for a great cloche, but they need to have a good fit, I think to be really flattering. I loved this video, so much fun. thank you. I rarely comment, so thank you fo all the informative videos you make. they are informativ, fun and charming.

Another wonderful, charmingly presented video, Justine! Here in New York City, all types of hats are worn, all seasons. My man and I have extensive hat collections, including many styles, vintage and new. He happily wears his vintage Porkpies! Among my favorites are my dark purple wool Fedora, my black wool Cowgirl, my new silvery blue Panama, my black wool Derby, my violet-blue fur Pillbox, my vintage black straw cloche, my huge brimmed black and white striped straw Floppy, and my multi-blue toned knit wool Nepal toque, which has its own side braids. Hats!!

But knitting is not a thing that prevents you from falling into the Fast Fashion trap, lots of yarn-companies are lying their rotten teeth about where their wool is from and the coloring process is equally as bad as HM. And a Norwegian flag does not indicate that the wool is not actually from Australia!

Wow, this video made me feel nostalgic! I had a Beret part of my school uniform and I still have it today in a drawer... In Bucharest younger people often wear knitted berets in winter. They look chic and keep reasonably warm too. Old ladies wear Russian type fur hats And in summer time I wear a Cartwheel, although people stare, I don't care, it keeps the sun away from my skin... Very nice video!

I was fortunate enough to inherit my grandfathers hat collection which consisted of mostly trilby (also called a Bear Bryant hat in Alabama, USA after the famed football coach) along with several fedoras and panama (which he wore to work in his garden). I have them displayed on a long pegged style hatrack. Nostalgia galore. Since there are no longer milliners around I cannot wear a ladies hat as one size does not fit all. Thank you for teaching me the correct name, trilby. I do so love your channel. Such great information.

I’m from Australia and I design and produce hats. Therefore my favorite hats are from my own label Orange bicycle designs. The hats I design are retro inspired from the 1950’s- 1980’s and include XL brim hats, floppy brim hats, bucket hats and cadet caps. I’m not a fan of the Australian Akubra hat which is very masculine and reminds me of cowboys, or drovers as we call them here. Thanks your fabulous content Justine. It’s always a pleasure tuning in.

Enjoyed this vid so much. I am a long-time admirer of Phillip Treacy as well. I have bought hats in the past, but when it came down to it, I rarely wore them, except for the occasional beret in the winter. Living in California, hats felt way too formal for my casual lifestyle. I enjoyed re-learning the names of all the classic hat styles. Thank you, Justine!

As for the hats, I live in Southern California, where very few people wear hats, but I wear hats most of the time to protect my skin and eyes from the sun, and also because I love the look. The beret is my favourite! I wear it during winter, spring and autumn mostly. In summer it's too hot ;) I have them in almost every colour of the rainbow now, haha. My mother used to dress me in them when I was a child and I just stuck with it. Here in Sweden it's a bit of an old lady's hat, but some younger women wear them too. I'd like to wear hats more often! My grandmother, who was a very chic woman, had loads and I wish i colud wear them, but sadly my head is too big for most of them. I think most of them are from the sixties, so there are lots of fun designs. :)

Hi Justine, loved the hat video! Here in Australia we are encouraged to wear hats pretty much all the time as the sun is so very strong. For the past five years we have embraced the trilby, a version of the cowboy for both men and women and the Panama. I wear a straw cowboy version on the beach and a upward brimmed hat if I go to wedding party or an outdoor 'do' at my Grandchildren's school, or garden party and week end markets. Sometimes I pop a hibiscus in the side. I definitely wear a b/ball cap when sailing! Not that I like it but it's practical. Having said all that, I'm really not sure which one suits me best and I'm still hanging on to a navy beret because I look really good in it!!! Sadly, the Michael Crawford character of Frank Spencer has put paid to me wearing it!!!!!! I so love my beret....and I love your videos!Thank you so much for the time spent on them, having been a make up artist (now retired) in film and tv for 40 years, I know only too well just how much effort goes into each one you produce!!! JoAnna The Singer they’re called half-hats, I believe. I have a few of them. Some are worn to the front of the head (usually tilted to the side a bit), with a face veil. Some are worn on the back of the head (between the victory rolls at the front, and the Gibson tuck at the back). They’re usually an oval shape that is curved to fit the shape of the head. Are those the ones you’re referring to? Also, the smaller hats (sometimes miniatures of other styles of hat) often worn tilted on the head are called toy hats. The Closet Historian has a video about vintage hats that might help (and is very interesting even if it doesn’t)

I went to my hairdresser twice a week for a wash/style. But, I wore hats several days a week. I received many compliments, especially at Church. Most women would say,"I wish we all wore hats like they used to"!

Excellent video and soooooo pleased to see a discussion about hats. Was sorry to see the "picture hat" (wide brim with the front turned down and usually an adornment around the ribbon) missing. I still maintain that a well chosen hat completes ANY outfit. Thank you for this Justine. Really enjoyed.

The Pillbox hat had been worn before Jackie's time. In the first half of the twentieth century ladies of the Egyptian Royal family wore pillbox hats occasionally covered with a chiffon cloth to mimic a veil. I'd be happy to share photos and videos. Many thanks for your educational videos. Keep going!

I second Violet Rose's comment about the Australian Akubra, somewhere between a Floppy and a Cowboy hat. Also true to say that hats are becoming more common in Australia where some schools don't allow kids outside during school hours unless they're wearing a hat (because of the high UV levels). Most common hat for kids is the cotton Bucket hat, often with a slightly wider and stiffer brim, because it stays on when kids are running around in the playground. But for me, I'm inspired and going out to buy a Cloche I saw recently

In the southern U.S. where I live, the stores are full of "church hats"... They cover a variety of styles, but are usually brightly colored, or white, and often quite extravagant! You see lots of women shopping for them each year as Easter approaches.

I'm in the North East and I find it interesting that you call them "church hats". The type of hat you are referring to are often seen worn by fashionista's, the ladies that go all out when dressing.

In the US, it's the baseball cap which is worn with the brim facing front, side or back mostly depending on your age. Women also wear them a lot especially when wearing workout clothing (even if they're not working out). It looks quite stylish when they have their ponytail pulled through the opening in the back. Also the knitted cap which is worn by men and women. They wear them any time of year, even in summer! The top usually flops down in the back. It is associated with a bohemian, nature-loving type of individual.

Very informative and interesting, I love hats especially when I have a bad hair day and don't have time to style my hair and to protect my head and face from the sun ☀️ I wear hats on a daily basis even though it's not really trendy in where I live. Justine, I am so pleased you made this video. Hats are by far, my most beloved accessory and although I own (I think) 50-ish, you taught me a number of things I didn't know. My husband also is a hat wearer, so between the two of us, our hats practically need their own room. As I move towards a more capsule type wardrobe, I know my hats will not follow suit. Sadly, other than toques and ball caps, hats are not widely worn in Canada- we're like a small club who greet each other and compliment one another's choice in head wear. I would say a trilby (you just taught me that distinction) is my most worn, but not necessarily my most favourite :)

Because I wear a lot of vintage clothing and have a vintage knitting podcast, I often wear hats that coordinate with my outfits. For my dusty rose lace jacket I have a dusty rose spray of plumes emanating from a light coral straw chapeau. There's a red velvet fez with a kind of doughnut on top and small black hats with rhinestones and veils, a woven brown raffia fitted turban with stiff fabric petals that add an extra dimension. One of my favorites is black felt with magenta feathers under netting. I knit a coat to match that one! I invite you to see many of these on Show and Tell knitting podcast.
