What's "thumbing" and how to fold the map?

Regarding thumbing, since I hold the map in the same hand of the compass (I think majority of us do), I use the tip of the compass as my "marker" = current position. I think it's quite common technique among orienteers, but worth to mention to entry level people in the sport.

That's true. Thanks for bringing that up, as I forgot to mention it in the video. Tip of a "thumb" type compass works like a charm!

Oh dear I have terrible endurance so id just rely on having a good sense of direction but ive had some stinkers: First there was an error and they placed some water where the point should be and vice versa. I was lost and 1 km away from it!!!!!!!!!! In a jagged rocky terrain. Cost me 51min..i would have done it in 40 min if it wasnt for that.. Another was someone having the great idea to zig zag through a valley with a "shallow stream"....shallow my arse ahah got down to my knees. The other side of the hill had tall grass in an incline so if there are rocks, hole...oh well. Of course tripped and did a 180+ degree turn and then gall on my back on a.rock.... At the end of that one people were piiiiiissed 😂 I got chased by chicken, had to pass by a group of cows and.bulls ( of course i just walked and did not look at them), had to take shelter in a ambulance with the emts due to a sudden.hail storm. Some people got bruises on their arms back forehead) , was filmed nfor a.promotional video finding the wrong point....tbf i do miss it but if i was to do it it would be in the ones open to general public as well. Lets say i dont have the same body i had as a 15yo 😂😅
