CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Howard (Ryan O'Neal) and Judy (Barbra Streisand) hightail it through the streest of San Francisco with a whole lot of cars in hot pursuit.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
With Howard Hawks's Bringing Up Baby (1938) as his blueprint, Peter Bogdanovich resurrected and payed homage to 1930s screwball comedy in What's Up, Doc? (1972). When wacky co-ed Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand, in the Katharine Hepburn part) spies nebbishy musicologist Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal in bespectacled Cary Grant mode) in a San Francisco hotel lobby, she decides that Howard and his precious igneous rocks are right up her alley. Too bad Howard already has a fiance, the propriety-fixated Eunice (Madeline Kahn in her film debut). Using all her arcane knowledge from brief stays at numerous colleges, Judy tries to charm her way to a $20,000 grant for Howard, and Howard himself, at a banquet with grantor Frederick Larrabee (Austin Pendleton). Things get even more complicated the next day when Judy's underwear-filled overnight bag gets mixed up with Howard's rock bag, which gets mixed up with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag of jewels, which gets mixed up with Mr. Smith's bag of top secret government papers. All sides converge at Larrabee's mod townhouse and the chase begins. Retaining Hawks' machine-gun pace (as well as the sly pop culture referentiality of Billy Wilder), Bogdanovich and writers Buck Henry, David Newman, and Robert Benton updated the opposites-attract screwball convention for contemporary times. O'Neal gently parodied not only Grant but also his own Love Story (1970) preppy, while Kahn represents stiff-wigged 1950s manners as opposed to Streisand's long-haired, pants-wearing free spirit. The happy ending, in which Cole Porter-belting youth wins out over old manners, found favor with audiences, as What's Up, Doc? became one of the most popular films of 1972, and the second hit in a row for Bogdanovich after 1971's The Last Picture Show.
CREDITS:

Cast: Ryan O'Neal, Austin Pendleton, Madeline Kahn, Barbra Streisand
Director: Peter Bogdanovich
Producers: Peter Bogdanovich, Paul Lewis

This might just be the best car chase scene in the history of movies. This was back when they did everything for real, no CGI. They didn't have city permission to drive down those steps, and they really damaged them (the scars are still there today).

Oh, Ryan. You, Barbra, and this film have meant so much to me since the first day I saw it. Because of it, you were one of the major figures of my childhood, as I watched this film over and over and over again. You truly captured the essence of a classic Harold Lloyd/Cary Grant type, with flawless line deliveries (“NOW I REALLY CAN’T SEE!”). Every time I watch this, you still make me laugh and laugh. Said stuntman’s name was Loren Janes, co-founder of the Stuntmen’s Association who doubled for many big Hollywood names throughout his career including Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Jack Nicholson, and even Debbie Reynolds. When he performed this stunt, he was actually knocked out cold by the impact and had to be pulled from the water. When he woke up, everyone congratulated him on doing the stunt successfully despite his injury, and he answered “What stunt?” Even after being shown the footage, he never remembered doing it.

As an old guy now I can appreciate how incredibly dangerous all these stunts were. NO WAY you could make a movie like this now. It looks hellaciously more dangerous than the stunts were for "Bullitt". (How did the guy ripping the awning with his neck at 60 mph keep from getting it torn off?? . . 'Or at least from getting a bloody rash?) As a 57 year old fart; I'm respectful of the work, talent and risks. I'm still laughing my head off though like I did when I was six!

Leaving out the side-bar of who deserves what most, they deserve a place in the rolling (or page-turning in this case) credits as much as any cast or crew member that contributes to what we experience while munching on our popcorn laced with peanut M&Ms. Re: awards. I wonder if it was thought to encourage performing outside the bounds of safety regs or something? And/or if a union thing was stirred into that safety pot? Guess it depends on what the awards recognized. (Longest awning rip by neck? Highest banner swing in a comedy or musical? 😝). Of course that's just questionable speculation from the uninformed. I dont believe it to be a real human, though i have no source. just after he hits the water, something else hits the water like 20 feet back, i believe that could be part of a launching device. Stuntmen do have ways to make a water impact less hurtfull. Its easier to pull it off in disturbed water over smooth and clear water.

@@Nderak Nice to see someone is as curious about this as I am. I've watched it about 10 more times, and still can't see how this was pulled off. He (or the dummy) is definitely in a crouching (tucked, knees bent 90 degrees, bent forward at the waist) position and about 3 frames later, his (or the dummy's) whole body is almost vertical, with arms out (in a flapping position). So, if it was a dummy, it had complex joints throughout. Now...there is a weird cylinder object behind the driver...about the size of a gold bag. I wonder if it was some kind of spring or catapult. These scenes were probably hard to set up. Those Cadillacs were very wide. I always thought this movie was very funny and impressive.

I’ve been running this through my mind for a long time Judy Maxwell-Jennifer Lawrence or Kaley Cuoco Howard Bannister-Bradley Cooper Eunice Burns-Adele Mister Larrabee-Jim Parsons Granted, there’s a LOT of other names that would be great too

This film is flawless as is. It must never be remade.

What's funny about this car chase scene it's a parody to the movie Bulliett with Steve McQueen.
