I was left wondering how the Nostromo crew found a "fossilized" Space Jockey with a chest burster wound a mere 50 years after the xenomorphs were created by David. We know fossils can form rapidly, sure, but the Derelict was well insulated from the outside of the planetoid's surface (which I guess begs the question of how it fossilized in the first place as it wasn't exposed to the elements or encased in rock, I suppose it could have been from freezing temperatures) but we also see the mural of the xenomorph in the Engineer pyramid in Prometheus and that place was 2000 years old at least, unless that was just the mural of the Proto/neomorph

And how did xenomorph eggs with facehuggers get on the original Alien derelict ship if David killed the Engineers all off prior? There were also facehuggers on the mural in Prometheus, btw. That's odd. Could the Engineers see the future?

Well, being a spacefaring race, I'm sure the Engineers are spread out over multiple worlds. He killed off one city on one planet. They also looked very different from the Engineers we saw in prometheus, from facial features to skin tone and the eyes, which were almost entirely dark in prometheus but not so in this movie. The ones in this movie looked like humans.

This is brilliant, man. Laughed my ass off. It's sad to say, but fans put more thought into theories and story than Ridley himself. I'm sure even half of the stuff fans talk about haven't even crossed his drunken mind, hence the plot holes and inconsistencies. The real question is, who the hell gives these scripts the thumbs up and let's them become actual movies?? Why not let someone better to do it? If the movie is good, people will like it, doesn't matter who made it.

Jesus, the fan stories are all shit. I guess you either get Scott or you don't. Unfortunately the fan base has been infiltrated since Cameron's film by those expanding on the terrible ideas based on the 1986 effort. I'm thankful Scott's back at the helm and making this thing interesting again for those of us that felt as pissed off by Cameron's Aliens as you lot seem to be by Covenant.

Well I don't know, dude. I like some of Scott's movies very much. Prometheus had very interesting ideas, but was poorly executed. Covenant seems to be taking a step back, instead of progressing the story it raises more questions... and when it does explain things, it contradicts the other movies. Anyway, it's just a film so I don't really care if it's good or bad, just an opinion.

I think Scott followed the path of other directors who sparked great franchises that they lost control of - George Romero and George Lucas come to mind. With both they tried taking back control of their franchises and actually ended up creating pretty terrible movies which spurned even diehard fans. It's an ego thing, they didn't like that other people took their seeds and made it bloom, so instead they jump back into to throw some weedkiller on the versions that worked in the hopes that they can draw attention to their own precious flowers... which, I mean come on their more current projects are nothing compared to what was killed off. Nobody should be beyond criticism. You made something great decades ago but what have you done for us lately?

The Alien never needed an origin! Why does it need to be made in a lab? That's so mundane. Destroys the mystique that made the Xenomorph seem so frightning. This ancient creature lurking in the darkness of space for us to stumble upon. Ridley really doesn't get what made the original so good as was evident when he ruined the Space Jockey design by making it a guy in a flight suit. Once again taking what was mysterious and creepy and making it mundane.

Pretty solid review. TBH, as a huge fan of the 1979 Alien movie (and to a much lesser degree, it's sequel) what bothered me most about Alien: Covenant was the fact that they've replaced (again) true horror and terror with weak-ass jump scares. What made Alien terrifying (in my mind) was the fact that it's a story about regular people (in space) confronting something completely terrifying and almost mystical in it's relentless perfection at killing. Then, to make the studio money and get green-lit for production, Cameron introduced guns, soldiers and cheesy combat archetypes and the rest is history. What I was hoping for most with Ridley Scott's return was more of that true horror. I mean, in the only real scene of the xenomorph hunting in Alien: Covenant there's absolutely no tension because we know exactly where it is the whole time (locked in the passageways). That sequence in the film, for me, encapsulates everything that's wrong with where this franchise has gone since the original. Bring back the tension, the horror, and the suspense and get rid of the guns and big action set pieces. I could even forgive some continuity lapses if we got that.

Yup, that's about the shape of it. I just saw this on a free ticket...and still feel done, as I'll never get that lost evening back. On reflection, you may have been too kind...but perhaps there was so much stupid about this movie, no one person could absorb it all. And I'm a huge fan of both the original Alien movie and Scott. I know it's a bit of a strangled route to make sense of David being responsible for the retroactive emergence of the xenomorph, but it's also the only thing that's genuinely interesting about the story. It's hard to factor the space jockey into that idea, but it might not be pure retconning either since we still don't know how or why it ended up on LV-426. The idea of the creation becoming the creator and engineering a perverse deadly nightmare that David (like Ash) considered a perfect organism, was the only thought provoking aspect of the film.

But in reality it's clear he's not actually falling asleep he's just lowering his eyes to his hands. I think he's also a bit eccentric but clearly his ideas and directions are a bit more brilliant than I think most people are giving him credit for. So he fumbles with the micro bits of story telling a little... but just wait til you see his macro. The Alien Universe is Alien, Prometheus and Alien Covenant. None of the other films are realy canon anymore, not even Aliens. We all know that Ridley never liked james Camerons ant like Xenomorphs, and i have to agree. they are boring and we have seen it so many times before. Aliens is a realy good action movie, but not a good alien movie. Covenant is a good Alien Movie, but not a good Aliens movie...you get it?

James* I fixed it. When I say that Ant like aliens has been done before I dont mean ant like Xenomorphs. I mean Aliens who act like ants. Starship troopers fks. Ridleys "version" of the Xeno is way more interesting than XenoAnts. Another issue I have is how easy they are to kill in Aliens. We are talking about the perfect organism here, and a single bullet or even stepping on Their head can kill them. I mean...realy? well well...still a realy good movie thoug

Agreed. When the neomorph stood upright it was reminiscent of the scene in Alien were the alien approaches Lambert, but David wasn't scared out of his wits like Lambert was because he was making first intellectual contact with his creation. Much more interesting.

Just so we all know, Ridley Scott's equally talented film director brother, Tony Scott, of True Romance, Man on Fire, and Top Gun fame, jumped off a bridge and killed himself a few short years ago...very close siblings, so...drinking away the pain is understandable to anyone with a heart....Yeah, Ridley has fuked up a genre BIG TIME, but in real life his big brother killed himself....without going to Ridley instead. So now you know....

The frustrating thing to me is that going into both Prometheus and Covenant without ties to the Alien franchise i think would have made them fuller more fulfilling experiences.There is enough good science fiction and thought provoking stuff in both that if fully fleshed out and focused on fully without having to shoehorn in Xenomorph shit they could have been very good movies on their own. Ridley Scott should have done these films on their own merits and the next Alien movie should have been Neil Blomkemp's Alien except instead of live action use a full on CGI thing with the IG actors reprising their roles retconning everything past Aliens.

The Chest Burster scene reminded me of the Bambi burster in alien 3, i suppose we did get an alien or 2 even tho the ending was predictable. I liked your point of view made me subscribe :)

FINALLY!!!! You took the words right out of my mouth. its not a blue dolphin, its a xenodolphine lmao. Lindlehoff was one of the main writers on prometheus and his intent was to run the story parallel to the alien franchise and be a movie unto itself. When covenant came around, he wanted to keep with his plan but scott said no so lindlehoff backed out. The origins of all the morphs are still unknown. David dumps a payload of black goo onto the engineers yet they didn't mutate or disintegrate, they simply died as we all saw. loved your analysis and you were spot on

***SPOILERS*** The very worst part of the movie is when the chestburster comes out. It's a tiny version of the xenomorph which stands upright and then waves at the android David (mimicking his movements). It's the silliest thing I've seen in any of the Alien movies. At least it didn't take a bow. For a moment I thought it was going to bow or even salute

Great stuff, new subscriber. I have a great, story breaking point. How did xenomorph facehugger eggs end up on a space jockey ship in Alien if the facehuggers weren't created until after David killed the space jockeys. How did the body in Alien fossilize so fast? How did the Engineers have murals of facehuggers and xenomorphs if they never existed yet? Ridley Scott broke his own story.

Prometheus brought something "new" to the franchise that could've been expanded upon, I wanted to know more about the engineers and why they created the bio weapons, and decided to seed life elsewhere etc, instead here's a movie about David.
