Very true Kevin, I talked to the dealer and he told me about this problem and the one I purchased a GTX Ltd 300 which was on a recall for this. They had to check it first before they would sell it to me. It was fine but had to wait for the new seal to come in to put it back together. I've never owned a jet ski before and I love this thing. It is so much fun and so much power sometimes it gets a little scary with so much speed.

Bought a 2021 Sea-doo Fish pro last month. Rode it for 15 minutes and it broke down and left me stranded. The output shaft is what fails on THE IDF system and according to Sea doo they currently don't have a permanent fix. They are replacing the output shaft and I get it back tomorrow. The dealer told me about half of the machines come back after getting a new output shaft.

@kevinskurat91963 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to see that only 7% of the Sea Doo PWCs which are equipped with iDF are failing. I mean, that is a lot, but it's not as many as one would think considering how much it is discussed on the internet, especially in social media. I happen to be one of the unfortunate people who have been affected by this issue. My first trip on the water with my 2021 Fish Pro lasted about 15 minutes before I experienced the iDF issue. I was stranded for over an hour before I was towed in (at a cost of $110). I contacted my dealer. My Fish Pro was repaired. The dealer showed me the gear they replaced in the iDF assembly. Second trip out, I was on the water for about 20 minutes when it failed a second time. I was towed again, which only cost me $75 because I didn't have to be towed as far. So, as of right now, my Fish Pro is at my dealer a second time. It has been there for going on 2 weeks. If I understood correctly what you said, I'm guessing that during the first trip back to the dealer, the broken gear was replaced, but, most likely, the oiling issue was not. So, I experienced the second iDF failure. Hopefully, they can repair whatever damage was done this second time, AND fix the oiling issue. I love Sea Doo. I had a 2019 Fish Pro, which was the first PWC I had ever owned. I'm a retired 64 year old man, and I love to fish. I elected to go with a PWC instead of a regular fishing boat for several reasons. The 2019 Fish Pro was a perfect choice. And, it was fantastic. My wife and I both enjoyed that PWC immensely. So, this year, I decided to upgrade to the 2021 Fish Pro. The additions BRP made to the 2021 models, including the iDF, are why I upgraded. I'm frustrated, and, frankly, pretty angry about this, but I'm doing my best to be patient. After all, there is no other PWC on the market from any other manufacturer, in my opinion, that can best the Fish Pro when it comes to fishing. Believe me, I've checked. And, quite honestly, it will take several trips out on local lakes without having any issues before I get confidence and gain trust in the 2021 Fish Pro enough to take it on a vacation and put it on bigger water. Thanks for this video. It was very informative.

@kevinskurat91963 жыл бұрын
@@watercraftjournal, I spoke to my dealership just a few minutes ago. I was told that BRP is now wanting PWCs with this iDF issue to have the complete iDF unit replaced. I'm guessing that replacing the entire iDF unit will take care of both any damage done to the iDF components and the failure to adequately oil those components. However, before that can be done, BRP has to approve it. So, the dealer has to submit a request to BRP. BRP will then either approve or disapprove that request. I was told that the request to BRP had been submitted and that the dealer was awaiting the approval from BRP.

Picked my GTX 170 up last Thursday next day put it in water. Made it 3 miles down river, never went over 35 mph and was stranded. Engine was running fine, no reverse no forward. IDF ERROR. Would not go forward or backwards then overheated and alarms going off. No grass no debris. Took 2 hours to get back to my dock. Dealer picked up unit next day said they missed a recall or bulletin from SEADOO. Now my question: is this brand new seadoo with 20 minutes and 3 miles going to work when I get it back? Should I worry? This is my first Jet Ski and dont like being stranded.....
@watercraftjournal3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully, your dealership performs the recall/bulletin correctly and TESTS IT before giving it back to you. Otherwise, you'll be returning yet again. (I suggest deliberately using the IDF close to shore/launch ramp when first getting it back. If it is going to fail, it'll be then.)
@jeffcopsey26123 жыл бұрын
Okay this is what solves the problem with the IDF they have a clothes bearing that goes in the back of the motor then they have a oil plug that goes in the back of the motor so what that does it feels the whole casing up with oil then what you have to do you have to take the fork shaft out of the IDF and add a bigger spring and that's supposed to solve the problem but they say on the GTX 230 limits in the bigger ones you don't have to pull the motor which is a lie you have to pull the motor because there's a bolt behind the supercharger that you have to take off to get the IDF off and they only give you an hour 7 for labor to do this I guess that's fair right pull motor put it back in an hour and 50 minutes not but hopefully this fix it I've done two and they haven't come back yet so hopefully that will fix it

Hey thanks for the info. I just got my 2021 Fish Pro with iDF and have about 150 miles on it (love it!). I have not tried engaging the iDF system yet. Is this something I need to do or will the problem present itself without my help? Preferred answer--> "Naa, if it hasn't happened by now, you're good!". ;-) And just to add, there is something I'm finding annoying and just wondering if anyone else out there is experiencing it. When I start up the engine at the dock, the boat creeps forward. I have gone through the "neutral adjust" process multiple times and it still goes forward at about 1-2 mph. 1-2 mph is not very fast, except if you're tied to a dock and loading a passenger with another boat in front of you. And one little nit-picky thing- when I'm going straight ahead at speed, the handle bars are tilted about 3 degrees to the left... :-( Thanks again for the video! I liked and subscribed!
@watercraftjournal3 жыл бұрын
Thankfully, you can manually adjust the steering linkage on the jet nozzle. You can preset the angle to properly align the bars with the nozzle so you won't get that. Per IDF, if it was going to fail it would've by now - so you're good. Simply stay on top of your regular maintenance and you'll be great. Glad to hear you're enjoying the heck out of it. Keep it up! And about the "lurching" thing...that's kinda just what happens.

Sea-Doo is facing minor shipping delays - nothing like the production uncertainties that Yamaha is undergoing. That sounds like a good deal on the Fish Pro. William, I cannot truthfully diagnose what occurred with your IDF but my educated guess is that your dealer either repaired the oil feed issue but did not address damage that had occurred to your gearing during the first breakdown, or vice versa. Your situation sucks, honestly it does. But never in the history of PWC (or cars or motorcycles) have I ever heard of an OE completely replacing a unit for a fixable issue. A failed hull? Sure, they've replaced them. But not something like this. As awful as this is going to sound, in the eyes of the manufacturer the inconvenience and downtime is infuriating to the customer, but not worth the cost of replacing it. Honestly, just sell it. Once you get it back, clean it up and list it for sale. Be rid of it and you'll never have to worry about it failing again. -K

As of April 5th, only 6.5% of IDF-equipped units are seeing reported failures. All IDF units are supposed to be checked (oil pressure check), but of all units to fail, it's less than 7%. And the IDF unit is a pretty mechanically-simple system all self-contained within the PTO cover. (Accessing it is remarkably convenient.) I bought a 2021 seadoo fish pro, the drive shaft disengaged and left me stranded in the middle of a large lake, I took it in and the entire idf seal and drive train is being ordered and replaced. It is the third problem so far with IDF, first the oil alignment, the carbon seal and now the drive disengaging, was told shaft become disconnected and cannot return. the very next week I bought a used wave runner and was putting it in the water and yet another new 2021 was being towed in for the drive shaft disengaging and left that skier stranded. Seadoo needs to get this together before giving it to the public to be crash test dummies. I have requested the Seadoo rep to contact me on the primary failure and what is being done to eliminate this issue. I also am a Service Engineer and look for root issues and find a solution for that issue. I love the fish pro, but would have had the option to not have IDF until it was fully tested and all bugs were worked out. Or pay me to be a test dummy! I have a question about the throttle. My right hand has a birth defect. It looks kind of like a crab. I grew up riding BMX bikes so I'm good on the handlebars. I am lucky to have a thumb, lol. So my question is about swapping the throttle to the left side and the reverse to the right. Is this possible and if so, how would you do it? Hell, if you think it would make for a good video, We could use my ski when I get it. But I've asked around and so far I can't get an answer as to how to do it. What are your thoughts on it and do you think it would mess up the warranty? On a side note to this, I got on my friends Yamaha to give it a try and because I have to use my whole hand to pull the throttle since the fingers I do have can't reach, as soon as I gave it some gas, the forward momentum pulled me back and we were full throttle and doing 70 within seconds...Maybe it's just because of the type of ski. Maybe the Sea Doo will have a slower start and I can control it better. You've been on both, do you think I might be ok without swapping? I appreciate your time. Cheers Friend...

And for about three hours i was having the time of my life on the machine and was going to shout from the rooftops how excited i was. But that only lasted three hours. And frankly what you say about Sea-Doo really caring about IDF is also not my experience. They not only don't want to deal with it, but they simply don't want to talk to customers about it. They are pushing everything to the dealers who have no information. I swear i'm not being biased. I never bought a PWC before so i'm not in one camp or the other. All i will say is what i experienced. And what i experienced is not what you are describing. I'm either really lucky or unlucky depending on how you want to look at it, but i have been worried about this since february and alerted my dealer and everyone else and my worst nightmare came through. I know you said i'm a fool for buying a first generation of anything, but that's frankly not a good way to treat people.

This means that the dealer is not performing the pressure check as required.

The fleet at Up Lake Adventures all have IDF, all use them regularly, and haven’t experienced any failures.

There is a lemon law in most states.
@watercraftjournal3 жыл бұрын
True, and do you know the minimum to qualify in most states? A 20% failure rate. Right now IDF failures are less than 7.
@jeffnuckolls77083 жыл бұрын
In my state if the dealer has your vehicle more than 21 days for the same problem or three times for the same problem the dealer buys it back.
@jeffnuckolls77083 жыл бұрын
Oops, correction- I just looked it up, in Oregon the dealer has three attempts or 30 days in for repair for a safety problem.

Interesting! Most states have customer protection laws like that - it's good to know your rights!

7% is the metric of failure. Can you tell us how many units that is that failed versus how many units sold?

Sure new tech is a gateway to the future but count me out as the lab rat. Sorry but a decoupling transmission in a ski sounds like years or working the bugs out. To many moving parts for me. I don't mind all the tech, electronics and sensors but mechinally...nope. To much to go wrong for as poor as the warranty is on these beasts.

That's already what IDF is, at least in a nascent form.

@watercraftjournal3 жыл бұрын
I've seen the (confidential) service reports; it's definitely not in the thousands. In fact, there have been less than 100 active failures (what you call "first ride breakdowns"). -K

I JUST PUT A NEW FISH PRO IN THE WATER AND HAD FAILURE WITHIN TEN MINUTES.....SO THIS VIDEO NOT SO ACCURATE, SEADOO IS NOT ON TOP OF IT.
@watercraftjournal3 жыл бұрын
Terrence, we're sorry to hear this. Sea-Doo IS "on top of it" as indicted by the service records and parts distribution, but your dealer failed to do their job.

@watercraftjournal3 жыл бұрын
Nah, we have the numbers. It's only 9-10% of total iDF-equipped units seeing failures. Well below the federal minimum for a recall. We have the hard numbers, not BS Facebook complainers and KZbin channels.

Yes, there have been some SVHO heads splitting. Changes made to the casting in mid-2020 have resolved that.
