According to a pamphlet I once got from the treasury department, the eye above the pyramid is the all seeing eye of Horus, an ancient Egyptian god. Confused, I asked the nice lady at the reference desk at the library about it and she told me it was the "tetragrammaton" . Further inquiry revealed that this tetragrammaton is a four letter word for god, whose name, among the jews was ineffable, not to be spoken. As I dug deeper I discovered connections to freemasonry but I don't recall the details, this was 30 years ago. What I do remember is that the more I found out about the whole business the less I understood, and each additional gem of information only made me more confused. It is all so convoluted now that I suspect no living person actually has a logical explanation for any of it.

Just to be clear, "In God we trust" has been used on US currency for a lot longer than the paper $1 bill. I actually have several Morgan head silver dollars from the 1800s that quite clearly say, "In God we trust" on the reverse side right above the eagle's head. The coin I'm holding is dated 1890, and I actually carry one in my wallet just for fun that's even older, dated 100 years before the year I was born. $2 Bills aren't really in circulation and haven't been made in decades. Also, we hate coins. We don't want to walk around with a coin purse and you can carry more money as "paper" than coinage in reference to weight and space.

@@freakaknight It is now, it wasn't in Franklin's day. It was guys getting together to work on their Virtues, of which Franklin listed 13. The Mason's tools were taken seriously as symbols of this work on one's character. It devolved into being little more than a club with little emphasis on character in the centuries since. When my father-in-law joined, for many Jews it was a way into an Old Boys network, as you say. But my father in law took a pledge when he joined not to turn anyone who asked empty-handed. And for decades (longer than my lifetime), until his memory went and he was simply unable, he kept that pledge.

@@MichaBerger True, There are some lodges that still seek to better themselves through knowledge and understanding. Mine for example Has a bimonthly education sesion were we talk about some of the original principles, and tennents, analyze the degrees, and discuss general knowledge and ideals that might have been discussed at the time. Almost everyone in my lodge is fascinated with learning so it makes it fun. But I have definitely been to some that just treat it as a social club. That's why it is so important to choose your lodge carefully. I drive over and hour, pass 6 lodges just to go to mine. And I'll happily continue to do so.

"Announcing the birth of the New World Order" is a very bad translation from someone who has never learned Latin grammar, even if we assumed the two phrases were part of the same sentence (thus "Annuit coeptis novus ordo seclorum") In Latin, the "of the" is contained in the word that owns something. That word must be in genitive form. For example, "seclorum" is in genitive plural, and means "of the worlds". "Annuit coeptis" therefore cannot mean "Announcing the birth of the". There is no "of the" in "annuit coeptis". "Novus ordo" is also not in genetive, but in nominative. It is the subject of the sentence. "Seclorum" also wouldn't be tied to "coeptis", since there is a "novus ordo" between them. Lastly, Annuit can't even mean "announcing". It means "it favours" or "it approves". Basically, the translation would go as follows: "Novus ordo" is the subject, so we put it in front. "The new order....". Seclorum -> "of the worlds" comes next. Annuit is our verb -> favours/approves. Lastly we get coeptis -> beginnings or undertakings. Thus we get, "the new order of the worlds favours the undertakings". Or a bit loosely translated: "the new world order favours our undertakings".
