I recently picked up an Ice Orbit River and it's awesome. A River with all the same glide as a regular Lucid, but flies straight when thrown flat brand new, is surprisingly torque resistant, and has a long pushing fade. I stopped bagging Rivers because they would get too touchy for my liking over too little time. The Orbit will beat in and develop turn much slower, which is exactly the situation you spoke of in the video.

Definitely agree on the Orbit VIP Ice Bear. For one, they're really pretty, especially in that blue. I love the First Run VIP Ice Bears because they were flatter and beefier than the stock runs are, and the new Orbit ones fly pretty much the same as the First Runs do. Right now, I have three Bears in my bag, and between the Bear and the Crave, I don't really need much else.
@ApolloDiscGolf Жыл бұрын
Yeah with a Crave you might need something a touch more overstable before something like a Firebird, but a straighter Felon might do the trick as well! At least here in the midwest where we have winds! But the Bear feels GREAT!

I think the look they've achieved with the white rim orbit ice stuff is just so clean. I really like how the plastic performs on all metrics too! They also seem to be flying pretty true to the mold (like the bear still has the turn it was designed to have). Most of them seem to have really smooth domes that look as they should, not caved in or extra tall, just a smooth extension from the curvature of the rim.

The new Innova 2-color Halo discs look amazing. If you have a local dealer in your area, go check it out. They also seem to have fixed their process; whereas the first 2 years of Halo runs of everything were super pop-top, a lot of the newer runs are true to the mold.

What I don’t understand is Innova hardcore fans say there is no difference between Star and Halo Star yet why are all Halo discs more overstable than any other plastic counterpart and why does Innova say Halo is their most durable plastic?
@NickCarroll Жыл бұрын
Halo Star and Star are the same plastic, however in most cases, darker colors are used on the outside, as they tend to cool differently than the lighter plastics. They tend to be more stable, but not always. Some of the alchemy of the plastics is changed slightly due to the color of the plastic used. Champion technically is the most durable of the Innova plastics, however the Halo Star plastic should remain stable a little longer than regular Star (typically) since they just start out more stable. 🙂
@ApolloDiscGolf Жыл бұрын
They might technically be a different mix, but it generally just feels the same as Star. So that's why people just say it's star plastic.

I haven't had a Halo plastic disc yet in 3 years of playing. Too expensive for me. Not windy here either. I have had cosmic Neutron which is my favorite most durable plastic. I always assumed they were using 2 different plastics in order to achieve the MVP over-mold effect with heavier rims?
@ApolloDiscGolf Жыл бұрын
That could very well be the case... But I don't think it's been marketed as that, has it? I think it's mainly for looks and the more stability comes just from it being a more overstable run
@MaximilianBerkmann Жыл бұрын
They aren't doing that. They're using different plastics that are mixed together in such a way you get that effect (in a similar they make the Burst effect).
@alwolschleger7242 Жыл бұрын
MVP/Axiom (same company, just different brands) use different plastics to achieve the overmold, and the process by which they make the discs/their overmold technology are patented. As I understand it, the overmold (rim) is literally molded onto (over) the thing after the core has been molded. The halo/orbit/etc. plastics seem to be a variation on the burst plastics that seemed like suddenly they were everywhere a few years ago, wherein they run two different colors in such a way as to achieve a certain effect within a single-molded disc. My inclination (not being particularly verbose on plastics or injection molding) is that the first color ends up being the rim, with the center being run later. Again, a guess, but seems like the halo/orbit/etc's are almost the reverse of MVP's overmold tech. My inclination is that the nature of the halo molding process is such that it affects the cooling rate of the disc after it comes out of the mold, and the nature of that change is such that it results in a more overstable version of that mold. Of course, the rate at which a disc cools ultimately allows for some degree of shape change in the finished disc compared to the shape of the mold. This is why there are already inconsistencies from run to run and why MVP have stated they're air-conditioning their entire facility as part of their big expansion (since MVP prides themselves on the consistency of their discs).
@CasualRelief Жыл бұрын
I guess if the weights were different that uneven rim would cause weight fluctuations and probably have an effect too.
@CasualRelief Жыл бұрын
So what about the “halo” process makes them more stable?

I have to disagree on the Halo plastic. I'm also a mold minimalist, but these halo discs are just too overstable. The halo Mako3 just has no glide in comparison with star or champion. While most of my discs are in opaque plastic (like star or lux), if I need a more overstable disc to layer in then I turn to the clear plastics (champion or neo) so that I can still keep my glide while achieving that fade.
