In this lively first episode of our Ramadan Ready series, join Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally as they explore the significance of the moon to Ramadan! The moon was used historically to measure time. Dr. Shabir talks about the controversies that arise when Muslims try to use the moon to determine the start and end of the month of Ramadan. He recommends we 'take a chill pill' because differences of opinion arise when matters are not so clearly defined. And Dr. Safiyyah advises that Muslims start Ramadan with moon-sighting, not moon-fighting.

Main question is not answered - whether moon sighting is needed in this modern time. Science is so progressed now that 1000 years calendar can be made in advance. Do we see the sun to pray nowadays? So why should we see the moon when we know when it will born?
@bf6724

The answer is very simple right in front of you. Because Allah said until you see, Allah did not say make the calculations.

@usamawaked6388 2 жыл бұрын
@@bf6724 Exactly! Why is that so hard to comprehend? There were very learned astronomers at the time of the prophet (pbuh), perhaps some of the best of the time and they could calculate the lunar phases very accurately, yet the prophet instructed to start and stop fasting according to the SIGHT of the actual moon, and he didn't command us to follow the predictions and calculations of the astronomers.

The moon being a symbol of Islam has no origin in Islam. It was the Ottomans who took the star and the crescent as their symbol and they never claimed it is the symbol of Islam. With the advent of Islam, all idol worship was wiped out. The idea of the moon god dates back to the idol Hubal, worshiped by the ancient pagans of Arabia. In their Islamophobia campaign, the enemies of Islam alleged that the crescent moon became an Islamic symbol because of its connection to Hubal the moon god. oh my God.. just follow a moon calendar which will predict a new moon & start your fasting. it's not that difficult. why do people gotta make it so difficult & complicated, especially since Quran says, we've made this religion easy/simple for you? it's really embarrassing how so many Muslims go out of their way to add confusion & complexity when there shouldn't be any.

@@ruru9886 really? where does it say that in Qur'an? and if it doesn't & you say "well Qur'an doesn't have everything a Muslim needs" then reflect on what you're saying, basically Qur'an is incomplete/not definitive/leaves room to be filled/leaves room for doubt, which is shirk in of itself. I'm not gonna argue but Goodluck with that. I'm happy going strictly with the Qur'an.

Fasting is not recommended if fasting will cause serious deterioration in your health. This is why fasting is exempted for pregnant women, children, frail old people, those with fluctuation insulin/sugar problems, and other serious ailments that require frequent medication. So for those otherwise healthy people that have fallen sick during the fasting month due to a temporary illness, they can compensate for it by fasting after Eid. Different scholars will give you different formulas as to what the compensation will be.

Notice the verses u quoted . And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, 👉if you (really) worship Him👈 👉But if they are too proud to do so),👈 👉then there are those who are with your Lord (angels) glorify Him night and day, and never are they tired. If u really worship him. It means they claimed they worshiped Allah but prostrated to the sun and the moon ,and those people were Arabs at the time of the prophet and this is clear from the verse after it "But if they are too proud to do so ....then ...... (38) } [Surah Fussilat: 37-38]

Controversy about the moon is not worth our short life time. I think this is based on ignorance because physical time is relative. That means it is not absolute. Time and the object moon in this case used to measure it's elapse differ from place to place on the globe. I understand that us as Muslims all want to move together simultaneously when it comes to the initation of Ramadan but in reality that's just not possible because we are in different physical times and occupy different places in this orbiting planet.

be more specific. The moon sighting and start fasting when you see the moon comand doesn’t mean it should be done with the naked eye. If the latest technology were available in the past of the time of prophet he would have suggested us to see ramadan app or use hubble telescope or any other technogy to determine the start of the ramadan and end of it. Sadly he prescribe us with the best technology he had in that time. So basically what we need to do is to check moon based on our locality and use the Technology. We use technology everyday for salat why not ramadan? Muslims are becoming laughing stock because of these sort things.
@afsarbmahmud
@afsarbmahmud 2 жыл бұрын
Assalamu alaikum. Muslims are not becoming laughing stock because of this. You have to look at this holistically. All communities may not have apps. Apps may use different methods to calculate the time. There may be remote places where apps do not work. In all circumstances, sighting the moon is the easiest approach. Muslims may be laughed at because the people of science and technology find it laughable that the moon had been split, or the prophet (PBUH) went on a night journey. But if you seriously analyse them in light of science and technology, there is no logical reason for Muslims to be laughed at. Watch the channels *Thought Adventure Podcast* or *The Muslim Metaphysician*. No atheist/science folks laugh at them.

This guy didn’t answer the main questions and kept repeating the same answers about moon being lunar calendar and shows months etc. The Hadith is clear that you have to start and stop fasting when you see the moon by your naked eye or through telescope binoculars which satisfies the seeing condition. If it’s cloudy then you keep fasting until 30 days which is clearly mention in the hadith. Neither astronomy science B.S nor following Saudi is acceptable. Islam is about simplicity and astronomy was never allowed even in the time of Prophet SAW. Following Saudi is illogical since they are in East with a different time zone way far apart. If you have to follow Saudi in moon sighting then why don’t follow prayer timings according to Saudi? You can’t follow your local mosque either since they are in no authority to make that decision as we live in a non muslim country. You have to sight the moon no matter what or follow the hilal committee in your region who is satisfying the sighting requirement. This so called imam is misguiding on several issues. Moon sighting is one of them.

@@Natalie-fj7fs i’m chill, i wouldn’t be speaking for others in the Hereafter if somebody is not following the guidelines correctly. That imam is simply dodging the question and avoiding the elaborated explanation. Certain things in islam are required to be followed strictly rather than taking a chill pill. That’s the reason why muslim community in the West is segregated into a number of organizations by just being chill and following whatever they think is best and easier. Basically fatwa shopping for their ease. Any rational person will understand the true hadith and what I explained above. May Allah give us hidaya and guide us all.

If July 31 is a Friday in Saudi Arabia, then July 31 in the United States will be Friday, although there is a time difference; Similarly, If the date of Dhū al-Ḥijjah 10 is 'Yawm al-Jumu‘ah' in Saudi Arabia, then Dhū al-Ḥijjah 10 will be Yawm al-Jumu‘ah in the United States, despite the time difference. This means that even though Americans fall asleep during Friday prayers in Saudi Arabia, they still pray Friday prayers on the same day. Only one day can be marked against a date in the calendar, and it would be unreasonable and impractical to use a calendar that shows one day in the US and another day in Saudi Arabia towards a date. The question that many ask is, whether to fast on the day of Arafat or on the 9th day of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. The question itself is unfounded because the day of Dhū al-Ḥijjah 9 in US should not be different from the day of Dhū al-Ḥijjah 9 in Saudi Arabia.

But the problem is Jumuah is not connected in moon sigthing it is connected in Gregorian calendar...nowhere in Islamic scripture that jumuah connected in the counting from New Moon sighting...so the jumuah is derived from early christian pagan months.Inshort Jumuah of friday is not a holy day for all Muslims who have follows in Moon sighting .the Jumuah in quran is not literally connected in gregorian calendar as what we called it seven days a week as Muslims observed Friday as Holy day.
