I can understand basic written stuff and ask for directions with a lot of hand gestures. So... A-0 I guess, haha! One thing I noticed : a lot of effort, a lot of gestures and pointing, knowing «where, when, how, how much, right, left, after, before», having a big smile and being humble and polite goes a LONG way in Italy.
