This was a coworker’s off the clock story. The front doors were the only way out of our store, she was on her way out with her bag over her shoulder when a customer stopped her telling her that she needed help choosing curtain fabric for her house. Coworker was polite, telling her that she was finished for the day and that there were staff at the counter who could help her. The woman replied that she knew she was leaving but serving her was obviously more important than anything else she had to do, blocking her from exiting. Coworker saw red and hissed at the woman to get out of her way so she could go home to arrange her mother’s funeral, had been working even though her mother had passed the day before.

Not me directly, but story #26 reminded me of something. Back when I was in university, I took a pair of art history classes with this one professor. Part of the coursework was to go with him to certain local art museums and have him lecture on the various pieces. Enjoyable, but definitely coursework. Every single time I went with him it would be me and maybe half a dozen students. At the start. As we'd continue this 1-2 hour assignment, we'd pick up random people who were visiting the museum and decided it was basically a free tour. I'm not sure how many of them thought he was actually working there and not at the university I went to.

If I could listen to an expert in the art I was looking at lecture at it without paying extra money, you bet your boots I'd do it.

I am always confused by the people who assume "I don't work there" is a lie. The people who work there and can assist you (by being on the clock) will help without saying "I don't work there", and the people who do say it either don't work there or are off the clock. Why would associates lie about working there?

They’re entitled and just want an excuse to yell at someone.

I assume that the Karen thinks they're lying about not working there to get out of helping customers

I was in Morrison's (UK supermarket) to see my sister, who works there, after I finished my nightshift. I also dress smart casual, so dress shirt and trousers. I chatting with my sister when a woman asked me where something was. 'You're best asking her' and I pointed to my sister. She immediately began panicking. 'Oh no, its happened. I'm not a Karen, I'm not a Karen!' I thought she must read IDWHL stories. 'Don't worry, I'm not a Kevin.' I thought right and she immediately started pissing herself laughing. 'Thank god, I'm not going to be in one of those....' 'I don't work here lady stories' I finished. My sister and her supervisor just watched with expressions that clearly said WTF. We explained it but they didn't get it. Wholesome experience overall.

I have to be honest & say these are encounters with dumb people. It’s happened to me a few times, I’m a soccer mom, nothing I wore would make them think this. One woman started yelling at me & I walked away. The part that tells me they’re dumb is the simple explanation that I don’t work here, leave me alone, and their eyes glaze over, the wheels move very slowly for them & they can’t just switch gears like a normal person. If it happened again I’d say no, I don’t work here & immediately move away. Arguing with these people is so ridiculous.

A bunch of times I've gone to other stores after work and people thought I worked there even when my work uniform didn't look anything like the uniform of the store

I've got an "I don't work here, anymore" story, though it's more wholesome than annoying.

WalMart stories. No one can find employees, at my local WalMart, I'm basically telling them " thanks, I'm good".

It's really along the same lines as most people Not " Seeing" homeless people.... It's about how you see the people around you.... If you don't see all people as people it changes how you interact with them..... anyone who looks Homeless becomes invisible.... Person wearing Any "Uniform" of the "surviving paycheck to paycheck" working class .... Becomes an employee of wherever you are ( ie subservient to you) ..... So look at how you see the people around you How easy is it for you to hang a negative label on the people around you? Weird... Cringe... Even Karen ( is that a Karen, or did you walk up after the Cashier was actually being rude or doing something that did need managerial intervention ) ... Bum.... Lazy.... Etc The more negative labels you're able to assume for others around you .... The closer you are to a True Karen or Richard

I always look for a uniform or colors that match the store logo before i ask someone for help in public. And if I'm not sure i ask if they work there first

I have this black vest with pockets on it that I wear most places I go. Think Burt Gummer from the Tremors series of movies. For some odd reason almost every time I go to Lowes I have someone asking if I work there. With is both funny and weird. First off, I don't know why they equate my black vest with the blue aprons employees wear. And second I actually used to work at a Lowes... like like 2003. So I guess I just must still radiate Lowes energy or something.

It's the aura of competence. If you look like you know where you're going and know where everything is, people assume you work there. I have such bad spatial orientation that I pretty much never get asked if I work at a place because I'm always lost even if I'm in a grocery store I've been going to since the age of 5.

i feel like these situations could be easily avoided. like it would be so much easier if people who worked at places had to wear a certain outfit if they worked there, so that way everyone who works at the store has the same outfit. one could say, a uniform dress code. i know there are only so many colors but the names of the stores are on the shirts?

My daughter's year 4 teacher and I looked remarkably alike so there were a few stories but the best was when I went to the school fete (fair?). I had at least 6 kids asking me to mind their money for me, thinking I was "Mr Smith".
