But if DH is like F1, why F1 is not in the Olympics either? But seriously though, it all comes down to committee desicion and willingness of sport association (Like FIA, UCI, etc) to collaborate. In this sense DH is more like MMA with XC being boxing. Also, BMX, Trials = Karate, Judo...

@@martynashtonGMBN I rarely watch DH. I watch every XC world cup. Downhill isn't a mature sport. That means that because participation levels are so low, the pool of athletes the sport draws from is extremely shallow. It's why there is such an enormous gap in the talent levels between the top few men and everyone else. On the women's side, it's even worse. You have Rachel Aetherton winning by 40 seconds on a 3 minute course, 7 years ago. Today, you have Valle Holl willing by 10 seconds, and 2nd place is beating third place by 10 seconds, in a 120-180s course. Meanwhile in XCO, the winning margin is usually less than 1%, there are usually a dozen or so guys or gals who are inside of about 2-5%, and the races are often decided by a sprint, in which victory is in the tenths of a second. THIS is the sign of a mature sport. That has enough participation to distribute enough ELITE athletes into the sport, to ensure that there is a LOT of athletes who are at or around the same level. XCO also, isn't the same as it was 10 years ago, let alone 20 years ago. Many of the courses are gnarly as hell. With downhill sections that are approaching enduro world cup levels of gnar, and they are doing it on XC ultra light, undergunned race bikes. Big drops, jumps, some crazy rock gardens, insane off-camber rooty stuff that is straight up unridable in the wet.

Only XC riders would complain about a drop.
@mercb3astАй бұрын
@@WorkLessRideMore Every single WC caliber XC rider, is better downhill than you are. Some of the elite women, would compete for podiums against the DH women. Cross Country is the better sport as a representation of the sport. World Cup tracks are gnarly and some of them have descent sections that are approaching full on enduro world cup level of gnar, while massively under biking them. It's the full experience of mountain biking. It has climbing, it has steep downs. Loose downs. Rocky stuff. Blazing fast stuff. The ONLY rider who complained about that drop in Tokyo, was one of the race favorites who is primarily a cyclocross and a road guy, Mathieu van der Poel. There was confusion over the drop, because during pre-race practice, there was a rollable ramp installed. Apparently he did not pre-ride the course AFTER the ramp was removed. So he can into the drop, which was blind, expecting to roll the line he was taking. There was no ramp, so he went OTB, and out of the race. He is also better at downhill than you are. Check out the Crans-Montana track from this years world up race. It was CARNAGE, because the track was designed to put the racers on the absolute limit of what the bikes they use are capable of, in GOOD weather. Then it rained and turned the entire thing into a skating rink. The drop into the rock garden was diabolical and badly hurt some racers.

@mercb3astАй бұрын
This is also reflected in how shallow the "elite" dh talent pool is. The sports participation level just isn't that high. It isn't funneling a lot of elite athletes into it. It's why winning margins in DH world cups are often insane. Someone winning the women's bobsled by 40 seconds would never happen. All we need to do is go back to like 2017 and watch Rachel Aetherton doing that in every single race. It's gotten a little bit more competitive, instead of one woman winning every race by 20-40 seconds, now it's one woman winning every race by 10 seconds, unless she crashes, then there are 3 other women who typically ride within about 10 seconds of each other that have a shot of winning. On the men's side, winning gaps can also be giant, but there is a little bit more depth, but by about 10-15 racers deep, you're often talking about guys who are 10-15% slower than the guy winning.

@mercb3astАй бұрын
There would be no point. XC racers would win it, every time. It wouldn't even be close, unless they rigged it somehow to make downhill about 90% of the value of the race. I say that because there are probably a dozen or so elite men who race XC, who could qualify for DH world cups RIGHT NOW. They wouldn't win the DH races, but they'd qualify TO race at a DH world cup. There isn't a SINGLE down hill racer, who would qualify to race an XCO world cup. Agreed about the depth of talent. DH already has an issue with depth in world cups. Winning margins are often gigantic, which means the sport is not deep. XCO world cups have A LOT of depth. When you weed down to 2 or 3 racers per country, you lose SOME of that depth, but XC has so much more global participation than DH, that way more countries have competitive racers than DH does.

I think dj is a slightly better representation of a lot of mountain biking (not trails and tech obviously) but it also lets bmx riders compete. It would be good to see it in a park like gorge road, Queenstown rather than as a slope style course as it would also open up line variations and transfers rather than just being tricks.
