The narrator has a hierarchy of people he feels sorry for, the veteran is placed by him at the top of the list. It shouldnt be like that but I wouldn't interpret it as heinous tho, doing that makes than other things described under that word seem less significant, it's unhealthy to live life so constantly angry so I hope u find peace in someway
