In the first of our BIG QUESTION research videos, Professor of Psychology Ian Robertson explains that elite athletes aren’t just exceptional sportspeople, they’re master psychologists too.
Top athletes train their brains so they can perform to their best ability and not get overwhelmed when it really matters. When an athlete is preparing for their race, their match or their performance, they don’t think about winning a medal. Instead, they create an attentional tunnel where they focus purely on their body and the next few seconds, nothing more.
And did you know that there’s evidence you can build muscle strength just by imagining muscle movements?
