Canadians visiting Australia for the first time a dream come true for us, what shocked us on our first trip to Australia, a lighthearted tongue-in-cheek of things that surprised and shocked us.
We visited Australia on a cruise around New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia. We stayed in Sydney after the cruise to explore the city for some days until we flew back from Brisbane to Canada.
Hopefully you will see some humour in our memories of our very enjoyable first trip to Australia. We visited Eden, Melbourne and Sydney.

You probably know this by now, but for other, the spraying is because Australia is an island continent. So it has a very unique flora and fauna that can be massively damaged by the wrong pest/disease entering the country. The joke we say in Australia is that the customs waves you by if you have drugs, but will tackle you to the ground if you are smuggling a banana :)

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Frightening? An aerosol can NOT sprayed into your face but at the overhead lockers. Frightening = Bushfires, drought, flood are frightening. The, Earthquakes and Volcanoes of my husband's native New Zealand are terrifying too. And the catastrophic economic disaster of pests and diseases that don't exist here coming in because twitty tourists think it doesn't matter. But an aerosol can? You've just sat for between 16 to 24 hours in a tin can in the sky, rebreathing everyone else's oxygen ffs! This why you get called Whingeing, when attached yo the word Pom. Australian here. Don't quote me but I think that Australia's Woolworths is a different entity to those in other countries. Indians are the highest number of immigrants to Australia. Melbourne has over 200 ethnicities living here. I don't know if that happens now but when my grandson was little he used to send a letter to Santa (by a designated date) at his local mailbox and would receive a (already formulated, computerised generic) letter back from Santa. He was thrilled! We consider Canadians to be our cousins on a country scale, mainly due to the constitutional monarchy history we share. And you are different to Americans !

One of our best cruises was Sydney to NZ. Do not be afraid of crossing "the ditch", we had smooth sailings in December/January. Make sure to allow time in Australia. Sydney is an easy city to navigate with light rail trains and ferries in the harbor area. Tours from Sydney to the Blue Mountains and animal parks (no platypuses there) were great. NZ has such a variety of geological and scenic places to see. NZ was expecting quite an increase to their cruise traffic, preCovid and I am sure there will be after, when things settle down. Brilliant videos and looking forward to videos from your vacation lake front trailer life.

It’s only relatively recently that Woolworths supermarkets became Woollies…at least in Victoria. They were always Safeway here, but may have been Woollies in other states. The two big chains,Coles and Woollies, really only became what they are today in the 70s. Coles was a department store that (in the 50s) had nothing over 2/6. Everything was just small groceries.
@stevenbalekic5683
@stevenbalekic5683 Жыл бұрын
@@pauldobson2529 Woolworths started in the 1920's and has been in all states since the 1940's. Safeway was an American company that bought out a store called Pratt's in the 1960's and spread mainly in Victoria, but also some stores in NSW and QLD...but Woolworths bought them out in 85. I'm from Adelaide and had never heard of Safeway until I went to Mildura back in the 90's...wondering why this Safeway had the same branding as Woolworths (the fresh food people). Then I also saw Safeway mentioned in movies in the US.

@@stevenbalekic5683 I just don’t recall many chain supermarkets before the 70s. Certainly around me (West St Kilda), everything was small groceries…even Foodland, which seems to thrive just in SA. We used to have Bi-Lo, Franklins but they got absorbed by the chains 20+ years ago. IGA (independent grocers) pretty much fill the gaps in regional towns. We only have one IGA in Port Fairy, but in Warrnambool, there are 3 Coles, 3 Woollies, 2 Aldi and an IGA.
@stevenbalekic5683
@stevenbalekic5683 Жыл бұрын
@@pauldobson2529 I think there were more local independent stores everywhere...the growth of the chains is what killed the others because they can't compete when negotiating from farmers and suppliers for better deals. I was born in the 80's so I always only knew Woolworths, Woolworths Variety, Coles New World, Bi-Lo, Franklins and Foodland...also I remember there being Super Kmart.

In regards to the insect spray on arrival, there should have been a video about quarantine requirements and a cabin announcement about the spraying. I was in the aviation industry from 1973 to 2021 and up until the early 90’s every arrival in Australia was sprayed. Currently Australian and New Zealand airlines regularly with a surface spray (pyrethrum based) to kill any insects picked up outside Australia therefore not requiring a manual spray on arrival, probably not economically viable for overseas airlines to do this and provide supporting paperwork to authorities for each arrival. It is all to protect Australia’s unique ecosystems and clean agricultural exports, both could be devastated if the wrong insect or disease got in. Enjoy your travels.
@ThisIsOurRetirement

Thanks for your explanation Simon, we did understand why they were spraying, as you say to protect from invasive species. Like you say if there was advance notice and an information video or seat back card it would have helped reduce the shock or surprise of spraying.

You're not the only one caught out by Brissy airport. We once had a friend stopping at Brisbane for a 4 hourn transit stop between Somoa and Cyprus. So we decided to pay him a visit for a couple of hours, flying up from Sydney. Our flight was cancelled so we had to take a 2 hour later flight. I got a call from him as we landed asking for our ETA. We were disembarking so I told him 15 minutes. He said he was having a coffee at Michelle's (I think) cafe at the terminal. We rocked up there and he wasn't there of course. Another phone call didn't heip the confusion. It took a while before we realised we needed to catch a shuttle bus to the international terminal. What a day... two one hour flights for a one hour get together. I also had a bad experiance arriving in LA many years ago. Had a 4 hour layover before connection to San Francisco. I was stuck in a second customs line for an extra 2 hours because I couldn't give them the name of the hotel I was going to be staying at. (Rookie mistake) Result... a panic run to my connection.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Indeed, when Woolworths started operation here, it was not a supermarket, but a variety store selling a whole range of inexpensive clothes, household items and the like. No self serve, of course, shop assistants to attend to you. The similarities are felt, easy going society, safe and cheerful but the arrival fumigation isn't the greatest welcome all the same. I was laughing all the way through as to Aussies, you both sounded like "whinging poms", which I have been called hundreds of times over the past few decades. Here in South Africa a bottle of Johnny Walker Red costs around 300 South African Rands, - equivalent to about 26 Canadian dollars. Our wine is excellent as we have many vineyards, so expensive wines are very good but even the cheaper ones are good (around 5 or 6 Canadian dollars). For 10 dollars you would get a truly fantastic wine here. We also have Woolworths in SA, and our Woolworths Holdings owns Country Road and David Jones in Australia, but nothing to do with Woolworths Australia. Woolworths here is an upmarket supermarket/store, just like Marks & Spencer in the UK. We also have Christmas in summer, like Australia, no snow. I am enjoying all your videos very much, and love hearing about how different things are in other places!

Wow thanks for your insights into South Africa a country we don’t really know. When growing up in the sixties my Father would buy a liquor from SA called Van Der Hum, he loved it. In Canada we are slowly getting South African wine back. In the UK way back, South African wine was where Australian wines are now. I guess politics got in the way. Thanks for watching our videos.

Talking about how 'it is good to see how Woolworths are still in business and successful'...as an Aussie that hits differently lol. They, along with another company 'Coles' have the monopoly on groceries here and we are currently very much going through a living crisis with food prices being at an insane expense for families who are really struggling atm to get by.

It is the same in Canada, with three companies controlling the supermarket business and food inflation making it difficult for many Canadians to buy necessary food. We were just reminiscing about seeing Woolworths as we grew up with British Woolworths. We know Australian Woolworths is not related, just a memory trigger for us. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It's Woolworths, Australia, a totally different company than the one you had. Sydney has as much diversity of food as Melbourne, if not more. Tourists very rarely seem to leave the tourist area. Chinatown, has food from at least 12 different countries and it is in the main part of the city, not far from Hyde Park. I used to have to fly out of Brisbane to travel to Taipei. I always made sure that I left plenty of time from my Sydney flight. There are buses between the terminals but obviously that wouldn't have worked for you.

Ahh, you're a Victorian! Woolworths has been in Australia a very very long time. Like 1924. Safeway was primarily a Victorian thing, although they did have branches elsewhere. they were actually an American brand who still exist over there but sold up to Woolworths (Australia) in 1985. For reasons of brand recognition they continued to trade under Safeway in Victoria for many years after that, even though they were basically Woolworths stores carrying Woolworths products.

The biggest shock going to The USA for me as an Australian was imperial measurements and in general Americans don't know why the metric system is so powerful. Eg.. A first year high school science student in Australia knows a cube 10 centimeters x 10cm x 10cm has a volume of 1 Litre. 1 Litre of water weighs 1 kilogram and this allows people to undestand more easily. The Celsius or centigrade system is based on 100 equal units of temperature in pure water as Ice at 0 degrees, Water at 1 degrees and steam at 100 degrees. Again easy The best I got in the USA were mechanics knowing 3 16ths was 10mm which means both sockets are missing from their kit. Americans also don't understand Australian construction code measurements that are ; A "Smidgen" = Half a pinch. A "Tad" = Slightly more than a "Fraction". A "Bees dick" is exactly half a "Whisker". These are corrective measurements provided to engineers by Tradesman who possess a spirit level. lol.

The metric system is easier for calculations and I remember the decimalization in Britain which was a huge upheaval, Britain was non metric for a thousand years, how many stones are you 😂😂 people felt we were selling out to Europe. Canada is a part time metric country in reality, grocery stores still prominently post price per pound in their advertising as well as metric.

Standard price (April 2023) of Johnny Walker Red label is $41.90 (700ml) and $59.90 (1 litre) at our major nationwide discount bottle shop. So A$60 a litre, which is US$40, C$54, €36 or £32. It isn't $87 per litre of whiskey in tax, it's taxed by weight of alcohol included within the product. So probably a tax of about $32 on that $60 one litre bottle. On the upside, this means you're better off buying something better than Johnny Walker Red, since regardless which whiskey you buy, $32 a litre is tax. The gap between the cheaper products and something a bit better quality is smaller than it is elsewhere.

It is on the Australian and New Zealand flags and others. (Crosby, Stills and Nash wrote a song about it and they perform it on a video on You Tube.) Once you get away from the light of populated areas here and have a cloudless sky, the night sky is wonderful and magnificent.

After NL's freezing winters we simple couldn't go back to our Northern UK roots. I hate snow.and being cold.!! We realised the other day when worrying about Covid and relatives that ALL our family now live outside of the UK all around the world .. Barr one in a home ,and one up on the Scottish border. We all live on the peripheries or coasts as well. It has served us well in avoiding CV19... All your 'shocks ' have been ours at one time or another . The best however has bene how utterly wonderful it is to live in Portugal .. Sun ,sea beaches ,warmth, amazing food, not expensive , lovely people and not that far from the UK for visits. Do not know if you are now aware - but Woolworths in Australia has absolutly no connection with the U.S.A. or UK woolworths. it was an Australian businessman who liked the name and used it for his australin venture- you should add it is a food out let unlike the variety store outlets overseas. you commented at the high price of whiskey but failed to mention the low price of wine and also they drive on the correct side as it dates back to the middle ages when horse riderd passed on the left hand side leaving their sword arm free in case it was not a frendly encounter.

Had a good laugh at your comments about Australia as it’s our home. We’re from Sydney…if you ever make your way back I have a bottle of Red Johnny Walker Scotch you’re welcome to have, we don’t drink it 😂 and yes our alcohol is expensive but hey doesn’t stop us Aussies we do like a drink or two. The spraying in the plane, we don’t even batter an eye as I guess we’re used to it. Haha Christmas in Summer in Australia with no snow…oh a white Christmas is on our bucket list. It’s always way too hot here on Christmas Day 🥵 good fun video guys thank you ❤

The whole idea of high alcohol prices is exactly to do what you experienced , deter people from becoming cheap alcoholics ! Woolworths here is completely different to the UK which was Woolworth , not plural and totally different stores .

Sin tax doesn’t work and is social engineering, if so successful why do so few countries do it, we don’t need a nanny state.
