Beveling is the first step to adding dimension in your tooling. Mastering smooth bevel lines is crucial but we have to know what side of the line to bevel on. This video walks through techniques that will lead to smooth bevel lines as well as showing a simple way to determine what side of the line to bevel on.

This little tidbit of information is going to be very helpful when I finish my renaissance costume bracers. The design I cut into them has several open areas and I was never sure which direction to bevel. Thanks Joe, you're a lifesaver! 👍

Could you do a tutorial in inverted beveling?

umm beveling the outside of the line ..is the the general rule of thumb for any design ? like flowerel or an object like say a motorcycle pattern , as I just did one and i did it the beveling on the inside of the lines , as i felt at the time it gave the bike parts i rounded look . so do you alter your way of thinking pending on what pattern your doing ?

When you get into objects and figure carving like a motorcycle, you’re getting into a little different style. Personally I would still bevel the outside of the main object to stand it out but as far as some of the interior lines I think those could be up for interpretation. Personally, I’m not much of a figure carver so I can’t give you much advice past that. I’d encourage you to reach out to someone much better than I am with figure carving. Jim Linnell with Elk Track Studios might be a good place to start.

@Honda200TwinStar can't go wrong with Jim's advice. Sounds like you're asking about inverted carving, which is where you get a more rounded look. Figure carving can get confusing. Sometimes, you're doing the opposite of what feels right. Wish I could show an example of what I'm thinking.

So I noticed you use a big malet I have the 16 is it good to have a 24 just wondering if I need a little more weight for certain jobs
@maddawgnoll

I think this comes down to what you're comfortable with. I have a 12 oz plastic mallet that I use for most of my tooling, (less fatigue) but I also use a 24 for some heavier leathers where I can get really deep tooling, or stamping in basket weave patterns (as example). Then, some days, I just use my 24 for everything and visa versa with my 12. I feel you can achieve the same results regardless of weight. It's just a matter of control.
