I think medium is always best unless you need to go smaller for portability reasons. If your hand is getting tired or you switch between a laptop and desktop a lot with most tablets you can usually shrink the tablet area in the settings.. You can rarely enlarge it. I'm not sure about other brands, but as far as Wacom goes only the Intuos Pros have that setting (Precision Mode) and it's kind of hidden.

Your hand gets more tired with a smaller tablet you have to use smaller muscles with them.

@alansartlog
@alansartlog 3 жыл бұрын
@@jotarokujo806 Seems a tad bit small to me (though can depend on how you draw too). If you're on a budget, I recommend getting a Huion if you haven't considered it already. My wacom broke and I've replaced it with a Q11K V2 that was less than half the price of the equivalent-ish wacom (has tilt + wireless) and more than good enough and there are cheaper wired models (HS611 looks real nice) that are about the same size. Only had a minor issue that I have not seen mentioned in reviews but have found online: pen pressure requires double the pressure when a pen button is held (so no holding to erase unless u want to be pressing super hard). Only other difference is the pen doesn't have an eraser end, but I never used mine. And I'm not too fond of the pressure adjust graph in the drivers, the ends are not movable (idk if wacom's were), but the programs I use do have their own properly adjustable graphs so it's not been a problem.

This is nice n all but personally I'd always get the Medium one (preferably one with Touch). Having handled every size, the Small is too tiny for drawing detail even if you zoom in constantly (which you'll pretty much have to if you go for S, so definitely consider Touch for pinch zoom (not included in the newest base Intuos model, but the older Pen & Touch and the new Pro have it) because zooming with side buttons or icon clicks will slow you considerably). And the Large is almost always more than you need: you might find yourself reducing the Active Area (the part mapped to the screen that the pen works on) for comfort and use it basically as an M tablet since you'll zooming in anyway to see detail. THAT's where the aforementioned zooming actually replaces the need for a big tablet. While it does force you to make finer strokes and more detail, which is nice, I find it difficult to justify L unless you also buy a HUGE monitor with it and have a specific type of artist brain that needs to see and compare/judge the entire drawing at all times. For everyone else the M is the perfect balance of usefulness and portability regardless of screen size. It won't take up THAT much room on your desk that it becomes uncomfortable, you can pick it up and adjust/ROTATE it which allows for more techniques (definitely find models with the smallest size/weight : active area ratio tho if that's your goal, not every model is good at this). And most importantly you'll be able to crate just the right amount of detail for what you see on the screen, whether you're sketching the base with broad strokes or zooming in to see specific parts of the picture to add more fine detail. I'd note that the iPads (9.4, 9.7 and 10.5 models) also have touchscreen sizes comparable to the M model. (Might even consider buying them instead if you don't mind IOS' lack of Win apps and awful file management holding you back).

Great Video ! this is very helpful. A small one should do fine. General rule is "bigger monitor, get bigger tablet." I used a small one ( XP-Pen Star G430 4 x 3 inches ) for about five years until the cable broke. Worked fine. I was using it on a 15” laptop screen at the most, though. You might want to save th extra $60 for a medium with a screen that big.

I have an intuos 3 6x8 inches and a dell 25" and the difference is too big. you do a little mark in the tablet and is like 3 times bigger in the monitor. For some stuff like let's say you are doing some colouring or some value studies etc it doesn't even matter. But if you want to draw characters and make the anatomy good or do more precise things like that, THEN is a nightmare. What i did, and i suggest people to do, is to set the screen area affected by the tablet very small, just a little bigger than the size of the tablet. This way, what you actually do in the tablet is very similar to what you get in the monitor. You need to complement this with a mouse and get used to move the document in photoshop if a corner is not covered by the active area. Also you have to get used to use a lot the mouse to go for the menus since the tablet doesn't reach them. I know a lot of people will never do this because is a hassle but some people will try it and prefer it if having a more 1:1 ratio is important. If you suck at drawing, then whatever you do it won't matter, just learn to draw.

I have a dual monitor setup , and i have my tablet do Rotoscoping , 3dsculpt, Motion Graph, basically I use it as a replacement of my mouse , so for those who have a dual monitor setup, i think go for large size because of the larger working area and u could do detailing without needing to zoom so much into ur image every time , its much more efficient than a medium size tablet, but if u have one monitor i agree to what he says , medium size tablet is better

@teohyc

You mean like this Intuos vs those screen tablets? Those screen tablets are more expensive. Drawing performance is going to be the same. But those screen tablets usually require you to buy the stylus as well and so far there aren't really any good screen tablets except for the expensive Apple iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. For beginners, I suggest not to spend too much money. Just get a simple desk tablet should be enough. If you're going to buy a screen tablet anyway, then go ahead. Again, it depends on your budget.

Hello buddy, thanks a lot for your video - it answered some of my concerns regarding tablet size before buying. I would really appreciate your suggestion very much as i am one step away from buying tablet, but i have a big headache to determine which size would fit me the best - Wacom Intuous Pro Medium or Wacom Intuous Pro Large. I never had a tablet before and it makes even harder to determine the size of the tablet that i need. My main monitor is Phillips 43 inch (4k). I am going to use tablet for some retouching, Photoshop and maybe Premiere work too if i will find it handy to work with Premiere. At the moment i feel that i will need to use it in conjunction with keyboard (will still need to access shortcuts). I have enough space on the table but still concerned if it would be convenient to use Large tablet in conjunction with the rest of the PC equipment - to access keyboard, tablet, mouse, without rearranging whats on the table each time. Overall i think that Medium size would be the most suitable for me to use it on the table beside keyboard and mouse, because im a bit worried about Large model's dimmensions (too big to be placed and accessed on table conveniently) but i also worried that my monitor is very large and Medium may be too small for it. Or it would be still ok to use Wacom Intuous Pro Medium tablet on 43 inch montitor? Thank you very much in advance for your advice :)

No mention of working with files at magnifications higher than 100% as you would with editing photos and what happens with respect to the tablet.

Hi! Thanks for your video! I'm interested in digital art, but still a beginner though. My computer is 14" so i was thinking about getting a small tablet, but i know that a lot of people say that medium-sized tablets are usually the best choice, so I'm quite unsure. I'm still a student so I don't have much of a budget. What size would you recommend in this case? And are there any specific drawing tablets for beginners you'd recommend? (I'm torn between getting Wacom Intous S and Huion 1060P)

Get the Huion. It's more worth the money. You get a larger tablet for the same amount of money spent. Drawing performance is comparable too.

I have a 27in monitor and debating between the med and large. Back in the day I had a small bamboo tablet for a 20in monitor so I’m familiar with the learning curve for the size difference . But being that I’ve never had a Screen this big before and the changes made to their drawing tablets over the years, I didn’t know if getting a size “ too big or too small” would cause the cursor to jump around or glitch out. What tablet size of the Instuos Pro tablet do you recommend?
@teohyc
@teohyc 6 жыл бұрын
+AriQuinn92 A medium size with working area around 10*6 inches should be good enough. If it is too big, it can get tiring to draw. If it is too small, a small hand gesture can draw too long a line.

Hi, I was wondering if a small tablet would suffice for my 21.5 inch iMac ( since Wacom only has that size available for comic). Also my hands are small so they would take up less space on the surface. EDIT: dw, I found a solution scrolling down the comments :)

Hello man! Great vid. So if I may summarize the video, you must get the right size of tablet according to your computer screen? So if the screen is small, you must buy a small tablet and vice versa?
@teohyc
@teohyc 7 жыл бұрын
+Kemal Hurlov Something like that. If the size mismatch is too much, it's going to feel weird when drawing on the tablet. It's like you draw a short line on the tablet but on the screen it shows a long line instead

Hello, nice video and explains a lot. i am starting to draw digitally on my 13in macbook Pro, and use the same small Wacom tablet you show in the clip (the smallest one) I use it fine, but now I would like to get a Medium-size tablet as I think it will help me illustrate better and move my hand around more. Do you recommend doing that? thanks.

Hello!! Apologies, considering this video seems rather old, but I needed a full review with different tablets, and yours seemed to be good to ask! So, I have a 15.6 laptop, and I've used the Wacom Intuos Art for a few years and would like to upgrade to the Intuos Pro Should I get the Small or Medium Intuos Pro? Which one would feel comfortable like the Intuos Art? I have rather small hands so the Intuos Art didn't take me long to get used to at all, so would the Small Intuos Pro be good for me?
@teohyc

If you don’t mind the small, you can continue with that size. I usually just recommend medium 10x6 by default

+venkatesh .c It is not that they are not suitable, it is they are uncomfortable because of the small size. If you have limited budget, you can still go for small tablet. Or you can check out other tablets. E. G. Huion 610 Pro, Parblo A609, XP Pen Star 06

I also have a 27 inch monitor and will be mostly using the tablet for AUTOCAD design work, specifically Architecture as I'm and Architecture student at UNI so I am thinking for the sake of accuracy I will be wanting the large but Im still not sure its going to be very ergonomic given the AUTOCAD programs require heavy keyboard use at the same time as a mouse/tablet. What do you suggest?
@teohyc

Get a tablet that's at least 10 by 6 inches. You can put the keyboard on the side of the tablet unless you don't have table space.
