I think it is cool you bee keep and have rendered your own wax. My husband is interested in bee keeping. His Dad lives in south east KY and has 8 hives. He does not render his own wax. He sells it to someone who does. I love our little bee friends. The more hives out there the better. Unfortunately, with climate change, it's rough on bee populations! I'm glad you let me know about the #4, I have #2 & #6. I guess I need #4 too, lol!.😊😊😊

Oh my goodness thank you for this :) I don't know why I thought I could just use my hemp cord lol Clearly my first attempt failed.

You can use other strings, they just don't burn as well.

Does that wick burn fast or slow? What is the burning time?

does square braided make or breake it? i bought braided cotton wick but its not square. im having trouble getting my candle right. it starts normal but after an hour the flame gets huge and the wick curls. i use a 3D printed mold and it works great

I believe the square braid makes it burn slower. I've braided my own wick with cotton harvested from my friend's cotton trees. She combed it and spun it for me. It burned fairly fast. I would check out this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGKzeK2Dhd6ZipIfeature=shared. At the end I show different flames on candles and explain what the problem is. What is the width of the candle and what size wick are you using? The best way to tell the problem is by looking at how much wax is melting. If your flame makes a narrow tunnel in the wax and the wax on the edges of the candle doesn't melt, your wick is too small. You want the smallest size wick possible, but still big enough to burn the wax all the way to the edges. Figuring out what size wick to use gets especially hard when your candle is 3" or wider.

@@BeekeepingMadeSimple thanks for the reply. I'm going to check out that video for some insights. the candle is only 30mm in diameter - so not very big; and goes inside a UCO candle lantern. there is no tunneling or anything like that. the wick just doesn't burn away fast enough and ends up too long and curling after an hour or so causing a large flame and eventually smoke/soot. since the candle lantern is for inside a tent, i have to make sure the candles burn correctly before doing any tenting with it. the wick I used is a cotton braided wick. its made from 18 strands of cotton thread. it has a 2mm diameter. the wax i use is beeswax from amazon and im pretty sure it's fake. all the 1 star reviews are from experienced makers like yourself and they all report the same thing. its also Made in China. ill be buying some locally sourced, real verified beeswax later today and will see if that makes any difference. thank-you for reply

Do you need metal wick tabs for all silicone molds of any size?
@BeekeepingMadeSimple11 ай бұрын
You don't need wick tabs when using a mold. Most molds have a hole in the bottom to thread the wick through (this will be the top of the candle). Then you use a bobby pin or clothespin to hold the top of the wick or you can tie it around a stick and let it sit on the top of the mold (which is the bottom of the candle).

I’m using pure beeswax to make taper candles and they keep dripping. I’ve tried adding stearic acid, I’ve used #2/0 and #5/0 square braid wick and still drips. What should I try next? 0:08

what size square braided wick would be best for a 1.5" diameter tealight? thank.s
@BeekeepingMadeSimple2 жыл бұрын
I would use a 2/0 wick. Test it out and see if it burns well. If it creates a tunnel in the wax, it needs to be bigger. And if its smoking, it should be smaller.

What was the second site you said you bought the wicks from I couldn’t make out what you said.

I've bought wicks from Mann Lake, various sellers on Amazon and Candle Science. I don't have much of a preference as to who I buy from. I've found them all to work about the same as long as they're square braided and cotton.

Hi. I just got lots of pure beeswax candles and they drip a lot. I just wonder if anything is wrong with them? May be the wick is too big
@BeekeepingMadeSimple2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Yes, the wick might be too big.
