I grew up in a lower-class working family in the US. When you grow up having seen your cable shut off and your power shut off, you gain a serious appreciation for what you already own. Because of that, I never really wanted or asked for much for my birthday or Christmas, and I still don't. I can only imagine how much harder it could be having to wait for the end of the month to get money.

That opening spoke to me immensely. As someone who lived in poverty throughout childhood, it is immensely surreal after days of being frugal to suddenly be able to blow money at any point. Even then, there's a pervading guilt for me whenever I do blow money, mainly thinking ahead to the end of the month... Thankfully most days, there's nothing of immense value that I need or want so I don't end up spending money at all... aha.

(which is actually a cake) it's a really famous dish here in the central-west region of brazil. *recipe here.* ingredients: 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter, softened 6 to 8 ounces queso fresco, crumbled or ricotta cheese 4 large eggs 2 cups yellow corn meal 1 can (12 fluid ounces) evaporated Milk preheat oven to 190° C. or whatever type of heating thing you use. grease 9-inch-round baking pan. bring onions, water and salt to a boil in medium saucepan or skillet. cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes or until onion is softened. allow to cool. beat butter and cheese until well mixed. add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add onion mixture; mix well. beat in corn meal alternately with evaporated millk. (mixture will be soupy.) pour into prepared pan. bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. cut into wedges and serve warm. make us brazilians and paraguayans happy

I was a rhythmic gymnast during the soviet era and, kid you not, our calf perimeter had to measure the same or more cms than our thigh perimeter (among many many other ratios, of course). In my slav mind, my calf size is a measure of unit that I use for everything from choosing piece of cheese to control my dog' s weight. Boжe!!!! My start of month is the end of month because I save up and do strategic planing the first weeks and then go treat myself to a restaurant or buy clothes with what I have. Sometimes I am left with same leftover cash which I save for next month. I have saved a lot of money by learning how to cook and how to shop with only discount products and points and such.
